I also have an office job and can tell you I have uses for it.

I don’t use it to produce anything, but where I am researching something and have run out of leads it can sometimes produce more which are then verified.

The reason is that it’s based in copyright law but uses it for the community instead of the individual. Without copyright, copyleft has no power.

I have many problems with copyright as it’s currently implemented, but with copyleft it usefully creates a social contract: if you want to be involved for the benefits, you must also uphold the rule of contributing back.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

For me the info I want is behind the Super key. Show open apps? Super. Show the dock? Super. Search? Super. Mostly I use the dock for occasionally opening the Apps menu or the System Menu to connect something Bluetooth or change network settings. I agree it could go, but then any casual users might get lost looking at an entirely blank screen.

GNOME is very opinionated about the desktop design, which maybe explains the plugin situation, why they were the first(?) to drop X11 etc. And there’s always KDE, XFCE and others.
