• We consider the issue at that time.

  Other things will also change.

  Maybe I will have thrown my computer gear in the river.

  Maybe there will be other communities who reject AI content, or others who embrace it.

  Maybe the zombie apocalypse will have arrived.

  Seriously though, it’s about the quality of the content. IMO we want to avoid unsustainable projects where someone has vibe-coded some unmaintainable mess. Other long lived projects with responsible AI use are less problematic.

  The surge in unmaintainable vibe coded AI slop open source projects is well discussed. More isn’t better.

  Better software translates to easier, more automatic processes for a lot of white and blue collar work.

• This feels like the kind of narrative that OP is asking about. Everything that you’ve said sounds kind of sane and plausible, but it’s not really borne out by the reality.

  I think a realistic case for that is that the AI tools that come out in the next few years will be good enough to do a fair amount of white-collar work

  That’s just not what I’ve seen. I’d love to be able to automate the work of my white-collar team, but everything that we have seen thus far just seems incapable of providing any significant improvement. Software providers in our industry have implemented some gen AI tools, and even the sales reps for those providers are very wary of them. They’ve been able to reliably automate some elements of jobs, but it’s an incremental improvement over the previous automation and it didn’t consume a significant amount of time anyway.

  There’s absolutely no evidence that gen AI will have a significant impact on my white-collar industry. In fact, the evidence presently available indicates that this generation of AI does not have the capability to impact our industry.

  other types of AI are already enabling robotic automation of factories and in the near-ish future might make self-driving truck fleets practical.

  This is really the same story. Factories have been being automated since the industrial revolution. Self driving tech has been a year away for the last 10 years.

  Kids want to explore their interests and it can be healthy to explore it with them, and teach them things along the way. Telling them no outright might push them to do it anyway, but this time without supervision.

  Basically, teach your kid how things work rather than just telling them “no.”

  However, I disagree with the commenter that said self-awareness is a good thing.

  If you want to go through life empowering others, avoiding doing any harm of any kind, and leaving the world somehow better for your existence, then yes self awareness is a good thing.

  However, if you want to be happy, satisfied, and go through life being comfortable and not require therapy, then self awareness is most definitely not a good thing.

  That is to say, self awareness is highly correlated with anxiety and depression.

  However, when you’re making a statement your primary objective is for your points to be received by your audience. Talking faster does not support that objective.

• Of course it’s great that she’s taken the effort to take a stand for something she believes in, while most people are just moaning about it on line, but while the style of delivery is shareable it’s not really how one communicates with the public or with public officials.

  The only people who will think this is a “good speech” are the people who already believe what she does, when she’s really trying to reach everyone else.

  For that reason the snarky witty basis isn’t really helpful. She also needs to reduce her pace by about two thirds.

• Because a CEO is a specific thing with a specific meaning that just isn’t relevant here. It’s laden with human meaning that is irrelevant to a statistical model.

  Really you’re trying to say that the bots coordinated their efforts, and perhaps one of them was delegating tasks.

  This type of structure is very common in tech, in load balancers or queues of service workers, containers and hypervisors, et cetera.

  Power structures that seem logical and efficient to humans are not so for a gen AI model. If everyone knows what needs to be done and no one has any ego or character traits to manage, then everyone can simply perform the next task as it arises.

  Its absolutely absurd to suggest that the bots elected a CEO.

• The Hugging Face incident story was truly unbelievable if you read / watch the details

  It didn’t really seem that way? Leaving containment seemed more like a configuration oversight than a skill on the part of the model. Accessing HF involved an 0-day but the commentary I saw didn’t indicate that it was a next generation hack.

  Given that AI exists, and can scan or otherwise find vulnerabilities, maintainers must do so because threat actors inevitably will.

  It remains to be seen whether the whole race will improve security generally? I imagine not?

  There is actually an established process for this. We have rules. If you think someone has contravened the rules you report them and then a moderator decides whether that person is in fact welcome.

• You seem to have misunderstood, and the article you linked doesn’t contradict what I’ve said.

  Wealthy, sophisticated LLM developers would not have been scraping old reddit. They would pay reddit for API access.

  Shutting down old reddit closes the door on back yard developers, not OpenAI.

  Additionally, when you run a prompt in a chatbot, it doesn’t scurry away and scrape old reddit and then formulate an answer. The scraping of content is going on while the model is being developed.
