Fair point, but depending on the interviewee, you might get very different answers and/or follow up questions.
Even if they assume something, it might be just for the sake of the example. If they’re competent, they’ll follow up with another example and so on, depending on how exactly you pose the problem.
If you present it as an abstract question, one possibility is that you get an abstract answer. If you present it like a ticket with no description, you might get prompted to clarify.

Yeah, it’s basically that, but it has different uses - two main things I can think of right away are 1) verifying data when downloading large files and 2) cryptography (e.g. when storing credentials). Oh, and hash tables too.

That’s strange - I had some of the same symptoms and it ended up being a completely different thing - a dying (and then eventually completely dead) SSD (the Phison controller fiasco).
Other than that the CPU itself seems fine and it’s only shown very minor degradation over the 4-5 years I’ve had it - i.e. it used to boost up to 4975 or 4950 single core, now it only goes up to about 4900 (no PBO, no CO); and I’ve also had to fix the SoC voltage because of the memory - but I haven’t touched that in like 3 years, so not sure it’s even degradation.

Subtle hint that this is not for them.
I’m hoping not only prosecution, but an actual outcome such that they (and other companies) are afraid to try this again.
If all they get is a small fine that’s just a business expense to them, then of course they’ll continue doing sh** like this.
