• It’s not infighting (oh well, if you want to see that, check any other post from GOS when they talk about privacy and security of other Android distros…). They quite legitimately ask why GOS using AI to detect vulnerabilites has triggered such a shit-storm while every other distro accept LLM generated code and no one seems to care.

• Good justification to why GOS is right to use AI to detect vulnerabilities. The only true way to protect yourself from an enemy that has nuke bombs is to have some yourself.

  Ukraine gave up its stockpile in exchange of promises from both Russia and NATO that no harm would come to them, and would there be harm from one side, the other side would come and help them. They were betrayed by both sides.

  AI is very efficient at finding vulnerabilities. Among a see of false positive, they find real ones. It’s much more efficient and faster than human auditing code. So either it’s GOS using it, finding them and patching them, or it’s… someone else.

• Based on my understanding, the “core” team uses AI to detect vulnerabilities.

  They also take codes from paid third party devs, and they say they don’t mind how they wrote the code, but it must be clear and each contributor needs to be able to explain it.

  They follow the same rules on code conventions including readability. So basically, it’s less that they accept it than they don’t care as long as it matches their quality expectations. If you can’t tell, you can’t ban…

• Next is a “funny” issue: scraping the web without checking sources will inevitably lead to AI trained on illegal content.

  The only way for them to prevent that is to train their AI to recognize illegal content. And the only way to do that is to feed it that content with label.

• Professional help costs a money that these non-profit often don’t have.
  Peers help is often also unhelpful and misleading. You can assume that among these non-profit using that service, a lot of them subscribed based on advices from other users.

  No you don’t see people walking in the middle of the street oblivious to the traffic. But if “common knowledge” was cars never hit anyone, you would see people doing it.

  MS not only knows that, but they wanted that situation, making their products incompatible with their own standards in order to let people believe that “nothing else works correctly”.

  Now they have it. They should be hold fully responsible for what they claimed, offered and therefore deleted.

  You don’t blame victims of elaborate scams for being victims.

• Crushing majority of people have no idea. They just know MS is a big tech corp, so probably not caring much about them small fish. For the rest, all PC are Windows. Linux is getting known a little better but we’re not “there” yet.

  Also, most small non-profit don’t have an IT guy. They just try to get something that works painlessly and have better to do than becoming sys admins.

• We had a competitor in Canada, way before Marketplace: Kijiji.

  It is not nearly dead yet, but if you want to avoid Meta at all cost, be ready to miss a good 80–90% of buyers and sellers (estimate provided by the Royal Institute of Guessworking).

  That means there are things you’ll never find even if they are sold. And things you’ll never sell even if there are people looking for them.

  The main difference between them is marketplace is embedded in FB app. You can search FB and find offers. That’s it. That’s how it won.

  For most people, FB is just convenient: all in one app. Why install another? With another registration. Another site to browse. etc.

  Building a competitor… easier said than done!
