With great power comes great responsibility. We can maintain life in circumstances that otherwise would result in death but we have to deal with consequences of the variables that would not have allowed life. It is a very grey and uncomfortable situation to have our capability exceed our wisdom.

And we’re staring down the barrel of a low trust society because the GOP is reshaping the economy in their image and they are the least trustworthy people in politics. Every corrupt thing they do undermines that trust, every institution they corrupt undermines that trust, every like they tell and regulation they repeal, every law they refuse to enforce, everything they do is low- trust. The longer they are in power, the worse it will get.

The hardware has been collecting private data since atleast the internet got popular. I’ve lived through half a dozen momentary concerns over some data collection in yet another device, articles are written and people moan then they buy the product and give up a little more privacy. Its been an incremental increase up until we have microphones and cameras in our homes. Even those warranted a slight public disturbance before people quickly relented and bought them. The “I don’t care if they know…” people helping fascism make it no longer a choice.
Given some of the decisions of the administration I’m concerned about what I can and can’t trust. I’m supposed to believe Hegseth about war and RFK about health, the antivaxer? Not companies get less red tape, less safety and health standards and I gotta be concerned about which company do and don’t make safe products. Its insane.

They control so much of the ecosystem of our lives, though. How much disconnection is possible before it becomes harmful? Will it be possible at all in the near future? I feel like I’ve watched this emerge slowly in the last 2 decades as people willingly adopt these tech dependencies, myself included, though more cautiously, despite all the warnings. We should not be empowering companies that are willing to hurt us and we’ve gone and done exactly that over and over again. They clearly use leverage to force concessions and we’re giving them more with every dependency. No wonder they trend toward monopolizy.

It shouldn’t take lawsuits to prevent actions that have unknown affects on the world but that’s what the powerful have argued for. “Prove what I’m doing is harmful enough to justify stopping me from doing it.” Its exactly the mentality of the right wing, of MAGA, of Trump, of CEOs and the entire business community. We have to prove harm before we can stop them from acting. And then they just undermine the entire process of determining that.
This is a much broader question about the tendency of the wealthy and powerful to act without any regard or responsibility to the communities and world they affect. They control vast systems of resource management and want to be beholden only to their own interests and only in the way they perceive them. They want to be tyrants, kings and emperors with absolute authority to decide what they do and what their systems do. Its absolute, pure narcissism, the ego and interest of the ones on top becomes the priority of the entire system they control.
Its insane to leave the direction of humanity solely to the egos of the wealthy and powerful. But that’s exactly what they argue we should do.

Because they have to compete with other tech giants and their AI initiatives or they will be left behind and eventually bought out by one of them. All these companies are in fierce competition with each other for survival right now. You still think they make products for our benefit?
