  Is it truly a lack of empathy to look at the pain and suffering a relatively small number of people are inflicting on the rest of the world and be disgusted by it? The health insurance CEO that got Luigi’d is respobsible for 10’s of millions of deaths. Elon Musk and DOGE removing USAID killed over 100,000 children worldwide. And Peter Thiel is literally trying to recreate 1984. How you consider anger over that a “lack of empathy”?

  Also consider that if the elites that are trying to oppress the world are ever taken out by a Death Note, their friends and family will still be significantly better off than the oppressed ever would. As in, they still would never need to work a day in their lives and still be well off. It’s hard to feel particularly sorry for them whem they have so much comfort that a small reduction would greatly benefit hundreds of millions of otherd.

  First off, sociopathy isn’t a thing. It’s a made up term a fake psychologist made up to put people on death row in Texas for personal gain. Go listen to the Behind the Bastards episode on it. The actual diagnosis is “psychopathy”

  Second, Light Yagami was already a psychopath at the start. Notice how in the show that there were 2 others that held the Death Note and they didn’t go mad with power over it.

  Look at all of the growing injustice and inequality in the world, spurred on by CEOs, dictators, and billionaires. Just look at health insurance, where hundreds of thousands die each year from denial of care. Look at Elon Musk and DOGE defunding USAID, which resulted in over 100,000 children dying across the world. Look at the destruction and death that Russia has brought to Ukraine to try and conquer them.

  Look at everyone in this thread who looks at all of that pain and misery and would want to do something about it. You’re calling them immature? No, you’re the one who’s immature, with all of your bullshit pearl-clutching.

  Here’s a bit of a tangent: when the US invaded Vietnam, there were a lot of incidents where troops were ordered to just wipe out villages of people who had nothing to do with the war, including women and children. There was also a high rate of soldiers “snapping” and shooting their officers in retaliation. Those soldiers didn’t “snap”, they were the sane ones.

• I think a lot of people ignore the main issue with Death Note. I don’t view it as depicting how anyone would be corrupted by power.

  Light Yagami started out with an overinflated ego and impaired self control by virtue of being a teenager with good grades. He likely was also already a psychopath (though you can’t give that diagnosis to a minor). He’s effectively the male Japanese version of Elizabeth Holmes. That’s what led to him becoming a megalomaniac.

  Not everyone starts off with that set of circumstances, and conversely not everyone would go down the same route. But that’s not the story the author wanted to write nor the story the audience wanted to consume. A good person using the Death Note to fix the world would get old really fast because there’s little tension and intrigue. But someone being correpted by power down a path of evil? That’s a story that can be interesting

  Tbh, this is the only reason why. The story is severely underdeveloped, but at the time big improvements in tech were what sold audiences.

  I kinda feel the same way about the Star Wars: A New Hope. The story was fairly anemic and did a poor job of explaining anything that was going on. It felt like an old Greek myth in terms of how things just happen as opposed to a continuous series of cause and effect. But A New Hope revolutionized media because it was the first movie to really depict alternate worlds well, giving it that technological advantage at the box office that ut wouldn’t get if it released today

• Tbf, how the fuck do you explain all this? Not saying you’re wrong about needing to be open to spouses, but Rudy’s situation is damned messy. From Sylphie and Roxy’s perspective, there’s just a random dead guy that shows up in the house in the middle of the night. That alone is suspicious. And given that Oldeus was already dead by that point, they only have Rudy’s account of what was said. If Rudy just explained what was said to them and they just accepted it without question it’d be unrealistic.

  Also, I don’t think they’re aware that Rudy was reincarnated and that he was in his 30’s when he died in his previous life. This detail has huge implications on how he’s interacted with them since they first met. And Oldeus knowing Rudy’s original name is the main proof behind him being from the future at that point, as Rudy hadn’t frozen/found the rat yet.

  Rudy’s reincarnation would need to be revealed to explain everything. While Cliff can probably see it with his new demon eye he’s unlikely to leak that detail given how much they’ve been through. The only other way it could be revealed is if the Man-God tells someone else. Honestly, keeping his future self (and by extension his reincarnation) secret is the simplest solution. I get that keeping secrets from your spouse is bad, but his actions here are understandable given the lopsided risks between being open and being secret.

  The big issue is how does he restart contact with Eris? Just sending a letter out of the blue is suspicious (though it’s unlikely Eris will pick up on it) and Rudy still has mixed feelings about her. The other options are to try to engineer a more natural seeming situation for them to meet up (which isn’t good due to the manipulation involved) or to just wait for Eris to show up on her own and hope things go smoothly.

  That being said, in that last option I listed it’d probably go better than it did for Oldeus since Rudy won’t be grieving for Roxie and Sylphie and also he knows that Eris’s aggression is from her caring for him and being terrible at communication. Personally, I think letting Eris just show up on her own and letting things work out naturally would be the least manipulative option at this point. But doing so is a risk, and with Sylphie’s and Roxy’s safety already being threatened Rudy’s probably not willing to take chances

• Mainly in the show, Franz Ferdinand was never shot, so WWI didn’t kick off until a decade later, but the Russian revolution still happened anyway (which is by far the weirdest historical detail about the show imo) and somehow their version of the USSR stabilizes 10 years early.

  Since it takes place in interwar years, you effectively have Imperial Germany fighting in what’s a blend of WWI and WWII. Since Germany’s overall strategies (Schleifen Plan/Blitzkrieg) were effectively the same between both wars it’s fairly believeable.

  And in the show it’s pretty clear that there’s no side that’s an unequivocal hero. They all sucked themselves into the war and are stuck in it, just like WWI.
