So often I find that functionality has the power to rescue something from being bad even after the critic has described the experience as bad.
That’s… what? Isn’t this pretty obvious, or did I misread this? Like, yes, mediocre does not equal bad.
If there’s an epiphany here, I don’t see it.

You gonna also comment on how mind-numbingly pedestrian the combat was? The uninspired puzzles? Or did you just watch the game on YouTube?

I don’t see any indication Sony own or funded this. It’s probably not releasing on other platforms for lack for funding or any similar reason.

It’s not exclusive though. They’ll probably release it on PC later, just like they did with the first game.

Do the math. If this game actually cost 300M, selling 2M copies at $70 does not even break even.
This shit flopped.

I mean, if you care that much about character or story in an action game, it’s probably a good idea not to pick it up to begin with, yeah.
The genre typically has bad to mediocre stories because the selling point is the gameplay anyway.

What?? 2M is not a good number for a first-party Sony game. For example, God of War 2018 estimated to have sold 4M on PC alone.
They’re just having a shit year overall, so 2M is their best.

They thought they could just copy and paste whatever they did in Spiderman, an open world game, into a linear action game… and it’ll “just work”
I think this arrogance is born out of the misconceived belief that linear games are inherently inferior and easier to design than open world games. I’m glad it backfired; they earned it.

Called it. Insomniac aren’t qualified to make this. In fact, very few western developers are.
Most just suck at making linear action games.
Insomniac’s combat is fine in an open world game, but strip everything else and put all focus on it, and it becomes obvious it’s mid at best.
Flying Wild Hog could’ve killed it going the Evil West route.

on Ubisoft begin removing Ubisoft Connect from Steam with the new Ubisoft Connect Services in c/games@lemmy.world · 10 Sep 2026
I’m glad it’s highlighted on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown in particular, because that was the first game I’d bought from Ubisoft in years, and the extra launcher deterred me from considering buying any of their other games for a long while still.
This is like the only good game they put out in forever. Great combat, I had fun coming up with combos in it, but I dropped it eventually because it dragged on for too long, and the further I progressed, the fewer enemies I could juggle, so I was having less and less fun.
That clone fight was peak though. Reminded me of an almost identical fight in F.I.S.T: Forged in Shadow Torch—yet another metroidvania with awesome combat and combo system.

on Palworld lead worries Steam early access has "lost its meaning": players treat it like "a normal game" and the program has been "abused for a lot of reasons" in c/games@lemmy.world · 10 Sep 2026
I currently have 5 early access games in my library and I’m happy with all:
- Genokids
- Spirit X Strike
- Counterclocking
- Kings of Hell
- Dead as Disco
All 5 were a “proof of concept” when they started and are building on top of it. I bought these games understanding they may take years to get to 1.0, but I also was conscious of the 2-hour refund window when I bought them and decided they offered me enough to keep them and look forward to their full release.
I also looked up everything I could about their developers and publishers and how they communicate with the community just to be safe.
It’s not an ideal scenario for either: the developer, provided they’re honest, or the player; however, extreme conditions demand extreme responses. Not many developers make this kind of action game any longer, so if the player needs to shoulder some of the risk, that’s only fair.

on The Fallacy of “Audience Aligned” Reviews | Unpacked in c/games@lemmy.world · 5 Sep 2026
That Moon Studios dude sounds like a moron every time he says anything. Second Wind are being way too generous here by calling his take worth exploring.
My take is the reviewer’s job is to give me knowledge about the game, and my job is to gauge how likely for this knowledge to be closer to the truth while taking into account my previous experience with similar games and the reviewer’s profile.
Smart reviewers know this and stick to what they offer best. For example, when ACG reviews Devil May Cry 5, he’s not gonna go deep on combat because he knows this isn’t what his audience, which’s mainly mainstream, want to see and it’s not his forte.
As opposed to that, when Combat Overview reviews Ninja Gaiden 4, he’ll go all in on combat because this is what his audience expect, and it is very much what he excels at.
Taking this into account, it’s not really difficult to see why and how 2 reviewers could have diametrically opposing opinions about 1 game, be both correct, while largely aligning with 2 separate factions of the player base.
Implying every reviewer should strive to appeal to the wider player base is weak mentality of someone who wants to ship copies no matter what.

on DLSS 5 comes with a massive 50-60% performance hit, so I hope you like lower frame rates with your dose of AI image enhancement in c/games@lemmy.world · 3 Sep 2026
But because it’s a post-processing shader that needs to analyze the entire image and work out materials on the fly to objects that have already been rendered, it murders the frame rate and can make mistakes on its guesses.
Yeah, this sounds dumb as fuck. They’re rushing and making the worst choices possible to push big marketing ideas.
Same as anything AI: if they slow down and make sure everything is done by the book, it could really be a useful tool, but they’re too high on power to care about any of this.

on Cracked version of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls on PC runs better than official release - Variable in c/games@lemmy.world · 19 Aug 2026
Too much work to do that, so very unlikely to happen. Our best bet is pressure on Sony forces them to remove DRM. ASW have to do what’s right and stand up for their reputation and customer base here. They’re the sole developers on this and RN they look really bad.
Sony won’t give a fuck because their priority is PlayStation, but ASW have always had a sizable, PC only community they’re currently letting down and eroding their trust. They need to push for meaningful action.

No, I know. Late game footage is why I picked it up. I just don’t wanna suffer for at least half the campaign to get to the Jean Grey stuff at the end.
I wish the game was comfortable letting shooting take a backseat like Vanquish, Gungrave, Evil West, or Wanted: Dead did.

I tried it and refunded because of the shooting. I hate aiming. I haven’t tried the aim assist though. Anyone knows if the aim assist is good? I just wanna play it like action game, not a 3rd person shooter.
I love that the sequel took aiming out altogether. Such an intrusive idea on an otherwise good action game with a lot of potential.
Wow, apparently aim assist and aim snap are broken in this game, nevermind then.

on Kayinworks - I Irrationally Hate RetroAchievements in c/gaming@beehaw.org · 9 Aug 2026
I’m all for platforms offering more custom options on both sides: player and developer. I’m just pointing out achievements aren’t inherently bad or good; it mainly depends on the player’s preference, which’s why I don’t understand existential debates surrounding them.
For example, in another comment you pointed out achievement pop ups can ruin emotional moments, but, in an arcade game, an achievement pop up can be euphoric after practicing for hours and finally getting the 1CC.
Valve doesn’t force achievements on developers. But there is a very loud minority of gamers who love to demand. They will yell in the Steam forums, complain on Reddit, bang at the door of the developer’s Discord channel. It’s quite obnoxious.
This is obviously awful, but it happens on both sides: I’ve come across many anti achievement people giving condescending, unsolicited advice to achievement hunters on Reddit, Steam forums, Discord, and even here, and it’s obnoxious AF. It’s a people problem is my point.

on Kayinworks - I Irrationally Hate RetroAchievements in c/gaming@beehaw.org · 8 Aug 2026
I’ll never understand the discourse surrounding achievements. They’re typically very noninvasive; you can ignore them, disable them, hunt them, or do whatever you want.
It obviously depends on the preference of the player, the game, and how much thought went into the achievement. Not sure what else needs to be said.
People who look at 100% completion as peak gamer cred suck. People who walk around telling others to stop achievement hunting because it’s “sucking the joy out of gaming” equally suck.
It’s clearly a personal preference, so I just do my own thing and let others do their thing.
IDK what OP meant, but you’re making one too many baseless assumptions.
For all we know, “perfectly functional” could mean “After lowering enemies’ health, the game was actually kinda fun!” I don’t think we have any strong reason to assume “perfectly functional” was used in a literal sense here.
We don’t know how experienced the reviewer is with the genre. As someone who almost exclusively plays 3D linear action games or adjacent genres, I can tell you their description fits what I would describe as a mediocre game, which I can confidently say are the meat and potatoes of the genre and one of the main reason it does not typically sell well overall. Then again, we don’t know what their background is.
The reviewer did not explicitly describe the game as “bad” There’s a lot more to action games than weight and challenge. A game could lack both and still end up mediocre.
