• been going through this where I work for the past couple years now. after a few dozen people and with a focus on growth but not the underlying support structures to allow for that, it’s been a fucking disaster. it’s been very difficult for me to accept that it is impossible for me to meet my previous standards because of the ridiculous workload, scheduling, and piss poor communication and interdepartmental processes.

  scale that x1000+ and yep it’s clear why it’s a disaster at huge companies

• yeah if you try to, say, open a pdf with a filepath that is too long, it just doesn’t do anything

  many such cases.

  this is a problem for our SharePoint/OneDrive setup because our own directory gets quite long once you dig down into dpmt folders in projects, then you try to access the contents of an uncompressed customer package that’s neatly organized by folders and has filenames that are 50+ characters long by themselves… it’s annoying

  the issue I have with how people use it is that it’s easy to just create more shit that they spew out into the world

  I’ve got no issue with people using tools to improve their work. I think it’s fair to say that AI is enough like predictive text and spell check when it comes to tools you can use at work. and like any tool, the user is still responsible for the end result

  my main problem with AI is that it is absolutely fucking our world (environmentally and economically) to create pure garbage that is thrown in my face every day. like, scale it back a bit everyone…

• one of the programs that we use everyday at work recently added an AI coding tool. I was going to announce it to the team when I noticed with the usual disclaimers about ensuring you know what the macros are doing, but then just deleted my message.

  we’re not a team of programmers, and there’s only one or two people on my team that I would trust to write code that could potentially cause us days of rework and tons of thousands of dollars lost to the company.

  those other people don’t need an AI coding tool, because they can’t code in the first place, and those aren’t the people that I want modifying thousands of files at once when I know that they barely review the work they’re doing manually already and I have tools in place to semi-automate that review for them.

• I haven’t used other streaming boxes lately, but I find this hard to believe, mainly because of the shitty AppleTV remote with the godawful touchpad that everybody decided to implement different gestures for and which is notoriously difficult to gesture properly with and only when intended to

  otherwise, I do agree that the AppleTV itself is quite polished. I use it for any streaming services that I may have, which is not many lately but was quite a few in the past, Plex, and YouTube primarily. also used to do some Zwift on it before I changed to using an iPad.

  besides the absolutely horrible remote that for some reason doesn’t have actual buttons for arrows and confirm, the rest of the experience actually is quite good and generally anything that is not is to do with the apps themselves. for example, Sportsnet is just a fucking terrible app no matter what platform you’re on.

  for the past year or so I’ve been telling people that DDG is so much better as it actually returns the results you’re looking for, which Google stopped doing. except in the past few months, the same thing is happening there now too.

  I don’t know if it’s fuckery with the search engines, people gaming SEO, ads, or if it’s just the sheer quantity of shit that’s on the internet now, but it’s at least half of the time now that I go to search something and it’s not in the top half dozen results. and sometimes I can’t even find it at all, despite knowing that it definitely exists out there.
