IMO that’s not the issue
The issue is the lack of safeguards. In our rush to call out the dad based on the headline, we shouldn’t let Google and the banks off the hook. The dad should have set limits on the card/account and paid closer attention to the kid’s view/ad activities, but both google and the banks benefitted from the poor design/usability issues that led to this.
EDIT: Since it was the company card, maybe the dad couldn’t have set limits on there. He used the company card on an older purchase, and since it was tied to his account, google offered the card as a payment option when the kid went to boost his ad. While I’m at it, screw the advertising industry that made YouTube into the mess it is now.

I remember about 15 years ago, a lot of kids wanted to post gameplay videos and music/art they made to YouTube. Some parents handled that poorly yes, but others took the time to watch the videos and approve them before anything was uploaded.
Kids want to explore their interests and it can be healthy to explore it with them, and teach them things along the way. Telling them no outright might push them to do it anyway, but this time without supervision.

It’s more likely that some unfortunate new user will run this command, than any LLM. Especially because commands like this would be the first to be added to an LLM harness’ regex blacklist.

It’s actually pretty useful for those who need that use case.
They have one API for all the models, and when a few companies are offering the same models, they will send it to the one that is cheaper or faster, depending on the user’s settings. That kind of developer simplicity is pretty much why Stripe got popular too.
They also have a lot of data on which models are popular, which ones are being used by specific tools, etc.
Now that open weight and international models are getting popular over the american big tech ones, it seems like a lot of companies want something that can redirect their usage to whatever model fits within their preferred parameters.

It sounds like they are OK with people using the tool, but he wants them to be mindful of how its being used.
But if you’re my colleague and we’re in a Slack discussion and you post a wall of Claude output, then I’m afraid I received a different message than you intended.
The same is true for people’s newsletters and social content. It’s your name on it; are you proud of the prose and weird AI-isms sprinkled throughout it? If so, great. But I can ask Claude directly if I wanted to.
TLDR: Take responsibility for what you send to people, and don’t just ask a chatbot and blindly share the output

Assuming that there isn’t a better extension out there for people to switch to, this move might push a lot of people into quitting Facebook completely.
If you’re using uBlock origin, then you won’t see ads anywhere else. Meanwhile on Facebook, every few posts will be an ad.

To be fair, I haven’t used Chromecast in a long time. Maybe even 10 years ago now.
I remember having connectivity issues, where I’d go to pause the content and realize it disconnected again. So maybe the battery drain was because of poor connections, or poorly designed apps

Its nice to be able to use it with a remote instead of fumbling around with your phone.
Also performance, decoding support, not burning your phone’s battery, etc

I agree with the point you are making, that this study shows that there is a risk of people using these systems to generate biological weapons.
However, in this particular study, they created bacteriophages. Those are viruses that attack bacteria, and the focus of that research is usually around creating antibiotic treatments (fight bacterial infections with viruses that kill them). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacteriophage
This was a problem in !selfhosted@lemmy.world and they’ve done a good job of dealing with it. You could take a look at that past discussion to see what worked / what didn’t.
IMO there is an organized effort behind some of these new accounts pushing AI projects, and you need to deal with it in some form to stop them from coming
