  Because of the complete vibe coding of Omarchy it takes longer the configure it than any other distro with a WM. I mean hell the AI cut the Hyperland config up into 6 damn LUA files AND THEN you have to unbind everything and rebind it as opposed to ONE file that you can literally just swap out binds. And yet you gave the guy a couple million for it.

  When I first switched to linux I used Mint and it was a horrible experience with my laptop at the time for gaming. the laptop itself was a hybrid Nvidia/AMD GPU so…I mean…Not a great experience for most distros but it was REALLY bad on Mint.

  on other Distros it was better but I was regulated to Wayland only as hybrids on X11 are just a no go.

  So depending on your setup gaming on linux can potentially just be as easy as installing steam or it can turn into a chore.

• I like CachyOS and it’s my go to if I want to use Arch. Everytime I install Arch I always forget something, always. so then it’s trying to remember what I did the last time to get something to work correctly. With CachyOS it’s just good to go for me. and they’ve really improved the install process and cut out A LOT of bloat. Before it would take forever to install Cachy but now it’s quick and the only thing I really have to remove when it’s done is alacritty and firefox. Paired with KDE it’s smooth sailing and great performance.

• I just went back to the classics, most of which are all free now to play online. the original Quake 3 Arena you can play on pretty much every OS for free now via ioquake3 and there are still a ton of servers for it. the original Unreal Tournament and Unreal Tournament 2004 are both available for free online play now and very easy to set up. I also prefer playing TFC over TF2. also the original HL Deathmatch is still a blast.

  I THINK there’s also a free option for Tribes 2 out there but I’m not 100% sure on that.

• I can also attest to this. about 2 to 3 years ago when dev houses and startups started utilizing AI I transitioned from a contract dev to a sort of glorified code reviewer/digital janitor. I saw the writing on the wall and figured my skill at code reviewing would become valuable. In hindsight that was an understatement.

  Senior devs who have completely embraced AI have stagnated or regressed in their skill set. Juniors/fresh grads are just glorified prompt monkeys. NONE of these places can fix anything that the AI agents build. None of it scales. None of it can be potentially refactored. I get contracted to try to “fix” these issues and I simply tell them it can’t be fixed. they need to start over and ACTUALLY build the thing from scratch with qualified and competent devs. the problem with that is they already laid off said devs or fired the ones that refused to utilize AI in their builds. And even if they wanted to hire those devs back either most have totally abandoned the field (obviously with good reason) or, and good for them, are asking for much higher pay to return.

  So yes it’s not going to be a problem, it currently is one. Initial builds can potentially work just fine but after that good luck, everyone is collectively screwed. There’s no one coming out of school that is going to save this and the ones that could save it have said “nope, I’m done”. Myself I’m retiring by the end of this year. I’m also done. I figured I’d focus on FOSS projects but even those projects are drinking the AI Kool-Aid so I’m not going to do that. the few projects I was contributing to or helped maintain I’ve told them I’m done. I’m just not going to touch code anymore unless it’s updating my personal websites or nixos configs. that’s it. I’m out.

• AI is a tool, like a hammer, and should be used as such. And like a tool should require training. The problem is people aren’t using it as a tool and rather look at the hammer and say “go build me a house”. That’s where the issue is. Does a hammer know how to build a house on its own? no. does AI excel at end to end builds? no. but people are using it for said end to end builds.

  Devs, vibe coders, god knows who else still to this day fail to understand that AI doesn’t understand how to build things correctly. All the agents care about is getting to a solution as quickly as possible to retain a userbase. that’s it. will what ever it builds scale? no. will it be full of exploits? very likely. will it be able to refactor whatever it wrote? no because it will believe YOU wrote it. so upgrades/improvements to whatever are virtually impossible.

  THEN you combine all that with the fact that EVERY AI’s training data, currently, is incredibly out of date. Tech moves too fast for it. So you have people building shit with libraries and what have you that are already out of date and they don’t know that.

• New Mobile Report Gundam Wing

  The series had more focus on the Drama as opposed to mecha and as a result a slightly cheaper budget (thus the reason the vast majority of mecha scenes are used over and over again) also the fact the teens CONSTANTLY try to blow up their own Gundams. As a result in Japan it was fairly popular with Women. Regardless it was still very popular overall in Japan to the point the studio asked the staff to make a sequel but the creators really had no intention. That being said the one show runner didn’t like how the series ended and thus we got Endless Waltz which also leaned into the popularity of the series with females which is why you get some of the Gundam redesigns.

  Of course in the West the show was wildly popular and was the first real introduction of Gundam to a western audience. The show also kicked off the popularity of Gunpla in the west.

• I like Haiku, i’ve installed it a couple times. An incredibly easy and insanely quick install. If you’re looking for a simple OS to browse the internet and do some light dev work and need it to run on old hardware you honeslty can’t go wrong with it. Out of all the none linux OS’ I was honestly surprised it had Floorp, don’t even have that on any of the BSDs.

• I just use Floorp with my linux and windows installs. on OpenBSD my options are a bit more limited so I need to either try to compile Floorp for it or find something else (if there even is anything else)

  Hell Floorp is even on Haiku. It’s a rock solid firefox fork made by a Japanese dev team that doesn’t release/update until things are absolutely rock solid. I can’t even recall the last time floorp broke, if it ever has. good browser, always my go to FF fork.

• I daily drive OpenBSD, I find it much better than my experience with FreeBSD. OpenBSD I feel has better wifi support, better VM support, and I found more of my devices worked on OpenBSD as opposed to FreeBSD (pair of USB Headphones I had just absolutely WOULD NOT work on FreeBSD, on OpenBSD it wasn’t an issue)

  That being said OpenBSD’s policy on AI isn’t exactly clear yet. NetBSD however has straight up said no to AI.

  The BSD’s are good, they’ve come a long way, but you can’t go into them thinking you’ll get a similar Linux up to date experience. the BSD’s are still a few years behind but if you’re going to try and make a switch I would suggest NetBSD or OpenBSD over FreeBSD. I might give NetBSD another go as I think I gave up on it last time because the install process annoyed me.

• i’ll get downvoted for this but I don’t care. I was on linux for years and this past week I switched back to Windows on my secondary drive. I still daily drive OpenBSD.

  to be blunt I switched back because of the linux community. I got tired of it. the constant in-fighting, the near daily drama, the elitist mentality especially on support forums or chat channels, people leaving projects for one reason or another, the advocacy for FOSS but as soon as someone with a lot of money and questionable ethics starts handing it out then political opinions quickly start changing. Suddenly getting 10mil from a facist “isn’t so bad and helps Linux”. With Windows at least I know who I’m getting in bed with.

  And as far as Windows being horrible…I don’t see it. I’ve been back on it for a solid week or two now after several years away and I just haven’t experienced what was constantly shoved down my throat from the Linux Community about how bad it is. I don’t have onedrive, i’m not being hounded to set it up, i don’t see it. I don’t have copilot, I don’t have AI, hell I don’t even have any ads in my start menu. where is it all? Things work. The boot time is faster than any Linux distro I previously used. zero driver issues, things work and believe it or not the games I play now perform better on windows. It’s like I was drinking the kool-aid about how bad windows is when currently I don’t see it. I haven’t even been hounded to update anything yet. It’s got winget and scoop now so I can install stuff on this thing just like I would with any Linux package manager. I don’t have to deal with protons or any of that.

  I will say though maybe it’s a hardware thing. When I had an ASUS Rog Strix laptop it was a miserable experience on Windows and on Linux it was better. On my Thinkpad it’s the opposite. and on OpenBSD my Thinkpad absolutely swims.

  Don’t get me wrong I still like Linux, I just don’t like what surrounds it. I’ll probably go back in a year or two but right now Windows works for me and works well. for my dev work OpenBSD is perfect, it stays out of my way. All my stuff works on that, all my stuff works on Windows. But frankly the Linux community being so divided and clearly consuming the kool-aid opened my eyes and turned me off from it. I just no longer can take what linux users say about other operating systems seriously when I’m just not currently experiencing any of that with OpenBSD and Windows.

  That’s why I’m on Windows.

• he wasn’t much of a programmer to begin with and if you look at the repo for Omarchy…i highly doubt he touched most of it by hand. many scripts in that thing leave you scratching your head as to why the guy from Ruby On Rails would write that and then you realize “ah, yeah, Claude wrote this.”

  it’s slop. it’s all slop. They also have well over 1000 “user made” plugins of which NONE are vetted, most are broken, and some just straight up exploit the users system. I found one that just straight up takes the users .ssh directory. It’s the wild west of idiocy amongst Omarchy users.

• you know after installing god knows how many distros and reinstalling just the same it’s like easy peasy to get anything installed now and up and running/configured the way I like it within an hour. Especially if you git repo your configs. I have my Suckless suite of stuff in a repo so when I install a new distro or reinstall something I just clone that repo and i’m good to go. all my important data is backed up with borg. it all works across any distro and even BSDs.

• as someone who smoked for years watching this hit close to home and made me not want to smoke. The first few episodes were like “yeah I’ve done that”. smoking butts, finding a “long one” and being thrilled about it. being broke and trying to make a pack last until next pay day only to smoke them all in a day. smoking one that had a bit of “slime” on it. It’s pathetic and indeed gross and i think that’s the whole point of the show. you can’t watch that and idolize the characters, they’re gross.

• when I was in college I worked at a Best Buy. this was in the early 00s. when I worked there in the media department they had just transitioned the tech bench over to geek squad. Yeah none of those dudes were trained in any of it. Most were just guys they pulled from other departments who essentially knew how to turn on a PC and swap out ram. that’s it. There was all of ONE dude who actually knew what he was doing but the rest had no clue. I remember buying a graphics card from the PC dept cause I got a decent discount, they offered to install it for me. that was a hard pass.

• as a former web developer, you nailed it.

  I essentially taught myself how to build sites from Geocities. Back then the internet was awesome because finding a new site that was cool was like finding buried treasure. Things weren’t condensed. there was no central hub for news, media, socializing, etc. it was all spread out. you had webrings of similar interests, different forums you’d go to for different topics. different chat rooms like IRC, or The Palace, or Yahoo/AOL chat. It was better. it was easier to make friends online.

  now it’s all condensed and boring. you go to less than a handful of sites a day, maybe only one or two, to get content. Forums are all but dead and social media killed them. We know too much about each other now, the “penpal” aspect is gone. blogs and livejournals don’t provide interesting and personal content anymore…they all have hidden agendas of essentially the author trying to get a job. Webapps killed creativity.

  The internet is boring now and you really have to dig and dig deep for that “old school” content. because regardless of what search engine you use be it DDG, Kogi, Startpage, Google, whatever NONE of them are going to point you to someones Neocities or SpaceHey or blog anymore. They need to sell you something instead.

• bingo. and unfortunately the lazy and inexperienced are using it more than others, or using it at a much higher degree. Linus even says it himself. they file a report and then “vanish” because they can’t answer follow up questions or clarifications because they don’t know how. if you deal with LLMs and the people that use them as much as I do for my job you see this constantly. daily even. they “build” something and when it’s reviewed and questioned the answers are just no where to be found because the “coder” can’t answer them.

  Like the other day there’s this guy on Youtube who is a huge advocate for Omarchy for whatever reason. older guy but he’s always going on about how great Omarchy is. he posts a video about how “we” built some application for Omarchy but the entire video is him putting prompts into Claude Code and then walking away. never touches it, never writes a line of code. but there were glaring bugs with the build so I reached out to him, asked him how he was going to address these things and hoping he wouldn’t put this app out there because it’s clearly broken. works on a surface level but it WILL break. he essentially told me to “fuck off”.

  you’re right an LLM is a tool but one that should be in the hands of those that know what they’re doing. you wouldn’t hand a hammer to a child and tell them to build a house. you wouldn’t hand a gun to a junkie and tell them they’re now a cop. I wouldn’t hand Vim to my mother and tell her to build a website. I feel LLMs should require human training just like any other tools we use. If you want to allow LLMs into your open source project, sure, have at it but it should be YOUR responsibility to vet and interview each individual that wishes to contribute utilizing said tools.

• I give kudos to people that know the WHOLE story and have played ALL the games. I tried and felt I had a grasp of it until I got to one point, can’t remember where, and I was like “wait…what’s happening?” and then it ends up I missed a game and sure enough it was the Japanese flip phone game that had a key element to the story. But like you said even after playing everything in many cases you still have to read online a write up someone made which on its own is usually like its own novel.

  Kingdom Hearts lore makes Dark Souls lore look like a casual sunday stroll through the park.

  they’re painfully easy to manipulate or simply by feeding it bad data. In this case it fucked up it’s time keeping thing which shouldn’t surprise anyone who has done any sort of coding with an LLM and then an idiot human being prompted it to make a decision based on garbage data. It’s like asking a hammer why it failed to manage the construction crew building a house. doesn’t work like that and should never work like that.

• I’ve been using Qobuz for the past few months and it’s pretty good. The playlist limitation sucks but they recently made it easier to shuffle tracks marked as favourites. I also find it easier to discover new and indie artists on there. I wish someone would make a TUI player for it an I imagine i’ll eventually just make my own (haven’t looked at their API yet so not sure if it’s possible) but there is a Linux GUI player called QBZ.
