I think Matrix offers most of the functions you need, “Discord but selfhostable and with E2EE” is pretty much what the Matrix devs are going for. Though it kinda has issues with ease-of-use, performance and stability, so TBH I doubt it’s going to work for you.

Zorin is Ubuntu-based instead of Arch-based like Cachy, so regular updates can be run without reading update notices and it doesn’t matter whether your last update was yesterday or 3 months ago (obviously bad for security reasons, but it’s not going to break anything).

Sounds too much like a dresscode TBH. Common dress code for e.g. waiters and antifa, and cops usually wear a very dark blue that’s indistinguishable from black at night.

Grimgar was really good. I think ReZero was also really good about exploring what it’s like to actually use these “cheat abilities” that most isekai-Protagonists have (in this case, the protagonist travels to the past after dying, like a video game savepoint), though it overstays its welcome IMO.

on Three first ministers signed an independence memorandum in Cardiff. For the first time the UK's three devolved nations are all run by parties that want out in c/europe@feddit.org · 14 Sep 2026
In terms of law, no. There’s no English parliament, it’s just that England’s population outnumbers the rest of the UK so much that they’re mostly fine with being represented by the UK parliament. AFAIK anyway, I’m not from the UK so take that with a grain of salt.

on Germany's Most Feared Party Just Won 44% — and Every Cure Has Failed in c/europe@feddit.org · 14 Sep 2026
False, they didn’t actually try every cure. The most obvious one would have good, social politics, what they did instead was what every scientist told them doesn’t work: copying the AfD’s anti-migrant program, people who want that just vote the original.
Or y’know, just ban them, their program is clearly incompatible with Germany’s constitution, and to a much higher degree than the established parties.

-
on Stop Doing Swap Partitions in c/linuxmemes@lemmy.world · 13 Sep 2026
I don’t recall that, but IIRC it does need to be a minimum of installed RAM if you want to be able to hibernate, since then you write out the contents of your memory to swap.
IF RAM used + swap used don’t exceed total swap space. Yeah, sometimes I run into that. Usually solved by killing webbrowsers, which suggests that most of the swap space is filled with unused webpages…

#1 and #3 always seemed like critiques of slavery and discrimination to me as a teen when reading those. I recall Hermione being the voice of reason that wizards ignored because slavery was convenient and the people who wanted “mudbloods” gone were shown as bad, with Voldemort in particular having no redeeming qualities.
#1 certainly looked like that was the setup, but the way it eventually played out sure looks like the author thought Hermione was just being stupid and annoying.
Also before the entire TERFdom and now literal nazism saga, she said shit like “nowhere does it say Hermione has to be white” (which her own book disagreed with but this is an example of how she used to be more tolerant).
I think this is an example of the author trying to gain “woke” clout without actually writing woke themes. Same with the “Dumbledore is gay” revelation, AFAIK it never appeared in any of the material she has written, certainly not in the HP books. That’s certainly better than going full nazi, but it always came off as insincere.

how easy the indicator light is to overcome
Not that showing an indicator light would be enough, anyway. I don’t want to have an explicit conversation with every Tom, Dick and Harry about whether they’re allowed to stream me to Meta, and I don’t have the means to sue them if they ignore my stated nonconsent or hide the filming in some other way.
And it really is a shame, smartglasses would be amazing opportunities for all kinds of legit applications if it wasn’t for the complete lack of ethics of the involved companies and many governments.

on I drew fan art for a game I can't play lol in c/onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 3 Sep 2026
My laptop is only one year older than that commenter’s and I’d also describe it as “midrange” (at the time), and it struggles even with those types of games. It’s partly the lack of software support for the iGPU, but it just isn’t fast enough even for most pixel graphic games - they don’t need a LOT of performance, but they also just aren’t programmed as efficiently as they would have been in 2015, nevermind the actual 90s console games that inspired them. My options on that device are basically visual novels, emulators for like SNES or Game Boy, or games more in the vein of Minesweeper.
That said, I could upgrade to a much more powerful refurb laptop for only ~200€ that should be able to play at least pixel graphic games. I do have a PC for gaming, though, so I don’t bother.
