Yeah, good point. The ability to download necessary firmware updates/patches from a safe, trusted source is easy to take for granted, but that shouldn’t be overlooked.

It’s hard to imagine exactly what kind of person would want to build their own Linux media server but also actually needs to contact tech support for hardware they own outright.
Half the fun anyway is getting it to work at all, the other half is tweaking and getting it to work exactly the way you want.
I’m a $50-$100 “mystery Thinkpad from eBay” kind of guy. From what I gather, there are lots of us. Exactly zero times have I thought “oh but what if I need to contact Lenovo?” LMAO

If it were me in their place I could imagine your actions being impactful, and inspiring further action or thought. At that age I was very interested in going against the grain. It was a different time, but not too long ago. Really no one wants to see ads, for sure, so it’s still a win, even if the anti-surveillance ad message is not of interest, you’ve still helped get rid of not just the annoyance but the malicious vector of a grab bag of random liabilities - modern digital ads.

Two thoughts :
- This particular example of adversarial advertising by Google is directly targeting a flaw in a competitor’s (Apple) OS
- The author asks why Google aren’t using their AI tools to combat these, which is a fair question. Surely they are using AI, of course, but no chance in hell are they using the same Gemini the public gets. It’s going to be tailored to their end goals, not the public-facing model the author screenshotted.

Most sites can tell if you’re using a VPN. It depends on the site, but this can cause sites to treat your visit as suspicious and throw up their defenses. This includes use of CAPTCHA. Some sites (e.g. Reddit) don’t work at all if your traffic exits from a known VPN.

AI is a broad technical and academic discipline within computer science. I know a guy who earned his masters in AI in the 1990s. And yes, that’s what it says on his actual degree.
