Sick I’ll check back in a few months when the GrapaheneOS phone releases and see if I should get that instead (kind of depressed about the state of Linux ARM laptops tho, Asahi Linux was great but the hardware is EOL now)

Currently I don’t use a privacy-focused mail provider because all of them suck in a way that demotivates me to put in the time and money to migrate and it’s an insecure protocol anyways. But for privacy-focused email providers Proton seems like the least shitty option right now.

LLMs themselves don’t, but an external memory system that it reads/writes to might or if someone is reading the chats. But running LLMs locally can be very private.

it’s the opinion of a large number of VPN users, not just me personally, and their practices are still clearly dogshit compared to ones like IVPN. And on the topic on privacy vs anonymity, the fact that they can’t keep users’ payment info private seems like a privacy issue as well.

At the same time, Proton makes paying anonymously difficult. If you want to pay with Monero they don’t officially support it and you have to go through a third party and buy a gift card, which is also not documented on their website, or exchange Monero for Bitcoin and pay with that. Contrast with IVPN/AirVPN/Mullvad which all officially support Monero. Also looking at their payment page, if you do pay with credit card they automatically renew by default, thus storing your credit card information without making that clear. Contrast with IVPN which doesn’t by default and clarifies the privacy drawbacks, and Mullvad which doesn’t do that at all. Sure the activist shouldn’t have used a credit card, but at the same time Proton aggressively markets themselves as a privacy service so they need to act like one instead of encouraging bad privacy practices because subscriptions are profitable.

This same sort of thing happens anytime a VPN company (like proton) responds to a legal court order, everyone was all “How could they do this to us!?!?” and not “Why would an activist pay using a credit card?, maybe we should teach people how payment systems work so they can avoid this in the future” I think we should focus more on the latter, preventative education, so that less people can be targeted or exposed in general.
It doesn’t help that Proton doesn’t have a Monero payment option, it’s like they’re not even trying

Do people honestly think companies should have a say over what their employees or members spend their personal money on?
Even without the “freeze peach” context, the company directly chose to give this individual in particular way more money than most people have including probably most of their other employees, that would enable them to make donations at the scale of hundreds of thousands of USD/EUR, so they already do have a lot of say. And in this case they’re a cofounder, not a random employee, so they as a person quite literally decide the company’s values.
That seems like a fascist attitude to me.
There’s nothing fascist about harm reduction.

It is for people who want to not get arrested, especially when the alternatives don’t have the same level of neglect that Proton does (and some of them have a proven track record of not leaking information). IVPN and AirVPN at least accept Monero so I’d trust them more

Yeah IRL for most things I actually use a separate account not in the “wheel” group that doesn’t have sudo access and use a Nix module that locks down directory permissions lol

Agreed, Electron has so much weird behavior and is a bloated slow mess. My latest annoyance with Electron is that it has the keyrings hardcoded to the desktop environment instead of going through the proper DBus APIs which of course breaks on my own desktop environment and I have to add a flag to all of my Electron apps to work around this.

I think some distros have a systemd service that does it weekly or monthly which is usually enough but in rare cases it’s not, just know that if you suddenly get out of space errors on BTRFS but you’re not actually out of space that’s probably the issue

For my Pixel 6 Pro I think I’m going to wait for Motorola or the low chance that a Linux phone becomes daily drivable, and even then considering my budget I don’t think I’ll switch until enough stuff breaks. Although I wish they’d extend updates for at least the few months before their phone releases so people aren’t left hanging

What specs do you need? The cheapest GrapheneOS compatible phone you can get for before the Motorola release is a Pixel 6a, or 7/7 Pro if you need better specs. I use a Pixel 6 Pro and the specs are fine if it weren’t losing support in October. If you want more longetivy get a Pixel 8.

I use hledger (strict mode) + ledger-mode (Doom Emacs) + Simplefin Bridge for personal accounting. It supports budgeting features as well, and you don’t need to self-host anything since you just commit everything to a Git repo. Also hledger’s documentation is very thorough.

Deepseek V4 Flash only costs like $10-20/mo for a reasonable amount of usage and with their new update it has gotten crazy good
The current ARM chips at least don’t seem to have stuff like Intel ME, the integrated GPUs are much better as well especially for running AI models. Power efficiency as well, Intel at least is getting close but still behind. Also memory tagging. The Intel/AMD duopoly is getting old.
