I mean I get the attitude and the likelihood it’s all a joke, but let me just say it’s easy to replace everyone, even fucking CEOs.
There are so many people out there that worry about how easy or hard it is to replace someone. The thing is, they often don’t think that hard about it, and a software developer leaves and a new one comes in with hopefully some semblance of the same skills that were required.
You start to think stuff like, “lol when I’m gone they’ll never fix Project X, it’ll break in a week or two”. Well… Maybe it will, and maybe it won’t. But maybe if it does, no one notices. Maybe even the customers don’t fucking notice. Maybe it is just one constant thing people thought “degraded” about the product, but they still pay for it. And if they pay for it, everyone gets their paycheck and no one cares.
And also if you’re the type to work on shit that no one else can touch or understand, you are literally in the crosshairs. Other devs probably don’t talk to you as much because they’re like “god I can’t wait until he leaves so I can rip out all his shitty code”.
They will destroy your Project X. They will solve the same problems over again. They will do it in some ways better than you did, and in some ways worse than you did. They will not have bugs you had and didn’t know about. They will have all types of new bugs. They will have bugs you found and fixed a year ago, and they’ll struggle less or more, or just ignore it.
And then they’ll leave and the cycle fucking repeats, and the other dev says “oh I can’t wait to rip out Project Y, fuck that shitty code base”.
Every dev thinks he’s super smart and special, and you all are as replaceable as the next fuck, because it’s all about whether the customer pays money at the end of the day, not about how good your code is or how charismatic your CEO is. I’ve seen CEOs come and go and no one cared.

on Pesto is love, pesto is life (I may be addicted) in c/onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 14 Sep 2026
Depends on the pesto and how many preservatives. If it’s commercial pesto, likely lasts longer, has more preservatives and stuff like Citric acid to lower pH, just better/cleaner manufacturing processes.
If it’s homemade, something like 3 days if refrigerated constantly.
usda.gov/…/vegu-recipe-august-23-pistachio-pesto.…
They’re usually worried about stuff like botulism. Garlic in oil specifically creates an environment that is really good for it, since it’s low in oxygen, warm, the garlic can carry the spores from the soil, and it has the garlic for nutrients. Pesto similarly has lots of garlic in oil, but also Parmesan and nuts and pretty high risk since it’s not acidic.

on Sam Altman says OpenAI will not go public this year as AI fears grow in c/technology@lemmy.world · 14 Sep 2026
It’s a good point. He might have ruined his “brand” in some ways, but he always kept some people believing he’s some sort of super genius, the kind of people that think intelligence is directly proportional to your net worth.
He does some super cringe shit trying to pretend he’s a genius online and most don’t fall for it, but as long as some wealthy people do, he’ll continue to have his brand.
Also his stocks have made some people rich, are usually way overvalued, so even people that hate the fuck usually know not to bet against his stocks. He is pretty good at blatantly manipulating the fuck out of the market no matter what the news cycle is, and he never suffers consequences.

I mean I hate Musk as much as the next Musk hater, but I can understand why SpaceX IPO’d and why OpenAI would hide their audit and finances.
SpaceX literally made self-landing rockets. They’re not a Tesla or a Boring Company bullshit scam. They did something that was amazing, and still is, and opened the door to much cheaper launches into orbit, meaning they can get so many government contracts for anything they need to do in space.
It is WAY cheaper to put stuff in orbit now thanks to SpaceX. That’s why they also went for low earth orbit internet and did starlink. Their own tech made starlink possible. Now I’d never use starlink because fuck Musk, but this is a direct result of SpaceX doing groundbreaking work.
Literally everything Musk does rides on the popularity of SpaceX actually making a massive achievement in rocketry. Tesla fucking sucks and doesn’t even make the best self driving electric vehicles. The Boring company was a failure and/or scam. Starlink is a fucked up attempt to get everyone’s data… Which would be a cooler idea if it weren’t related to Musk but I need to have a tiny bit of trust in my ISP, sorry.
Only SpaceX ever did something cool, and it was legitimately really cool, and the result of good engineers doing work that Musk took the credit for.

on AI’s recursive self-improvement might not come so quickly after all in c/technology@lemmy.world · 14 Sep 2026
I think people made some crazy magical assumptions about AI based on scifi that doesn’t apply to real life. Real things to consider and prepare for, but not likely.
Recursive exponential self improvement? Just because something knows how to code doesnt mean it can make the best ultimate next version of itself. Even physical evolution takes millions of years, and it creates mistakes and has setbacks.
We might be seeing logarithmic AI improvement today, like evolution hitting a hill that it can’t cross. We might need trillions more gigabytes of clean training data that isn’t LLM generated to hit the next level, and it might not even be worth it.
I think what the AI developers are doing by constantly promoting ai fear is linking the idea of exponential ai self improvement to it, because their biggest fear right now might be investors realizing that isn’t real, and every dollar they invest is getting less and less back.

on I do not recommend: Marvel's Wolverine (Review) - Skill up in c/games@lemmy.world · 12 Sep 2026
I do think the entire dev industry, not just game dev but software development, leaning more and more on AI is having some serious consequences that not many see yet. I say that as someone who is in a company under a CEO that is drinking the AI Kool aid too, someone I interact with a decent amount. I see how leadership reacts to this stuff and how dev behavior has changed since 20 years ago to AI getting started a few years ago to today, and there’s some very visible issues.
Software developers, even the good ones, are being heavily pushed to use it and move fast and not look at code too heavily, either their own or their coworkers’. We used to rely heavily on peers reviewing each other’s work. They now claim that workflow is “dead”.
And they only hire half as many juniors, because seniors are filling the gaps so doesn’t and juniors aren’t as “useful” as they used to be. If you want to ask someone to build something out for the next month and heavily review their work to make sure it’s correct because you don’t trust them … You can do it with AI, except it’s done in a day, and people decide not to review it because it’s so quick and emits so much slop.
Now they focus on testing, making sure another ai reviewed the AI work, making sure unit tests exist, making sure it followed a well thought out system design (probably one of the smarter parts of mostly dumb ideas), and then they merge it themselves because no one else wants to look at slop.
I’ve noticed that a lot of stuff gets built out, entire fucking products with tons of working menus, and no one even knows who built them or how it works. Then you read the author and see cursor everywhere, and you find who triggered it, and they don’t even know how it works.
Worse, they don’t even know how to check for bugs or watch if things break. They wouldn’t know what would break. And worse, they don’t give a fuck if it breaks because they feel way less like they worked on it, and don’t care about it.
I’ve literally seen an app like that and told the dev hey that’s broken right now, and he said “ask the AI to make a new one”. For fucks sake, what? You want to reprogram something from scratch when you see bugs?
There’s zero ownership, people leave jobs earlier because they stop caring earlier, less people hired back because they only want seniors and people who are willing to do the work of 3 people, and CEOs are slowly letting people go because in their pipedream, AI does everything and they just sit and own it.
Even then, they’re fucking stupid because if I was the guy selling the AI service, I’d just replace every company I essentially already replaced. Why the fuck do I need an external CEO and a company name if they depend 100% on me? I build their product already for them. Why not sell it for them?
The entire software dev industry is slowly getting infested with this “let AI do it” mentality that is making all software worse. I’ve seen apps break these days that never would break before because they have millions of customers using them constantly. But now, who gives a fuck if it breaks for millions, because no one even knows how to check

everyone seems so shocked that it keeps insulting the players intelligence with nav and gps and constant reminders, but do people not realize this is the direction AAA has been going since forever?
I’ve always fucking hated this shit… But people seem to fucking love not having to think or explore in games, and they want to basically watch a movie but feel like they’re in it. We went from Morrowind to Skyrim and Skyrim made more money by reaching a bigger audience.
You take it to the obvious next step and reveal how little faith you have in people’s smooth brains, and while it was basically a step in the same direction, I guess people finally felt insulted.
Games used to be really fucking hard, and “iron man” was just the fucking default lol. You die, you die. Maybe that was shitty but they used to make games where beating it was way crazier. Nowadays it’s mostly “I held up and jumped a few times at the right time”

on ‘The People Building AI Earnestly Believe That It Could Kill Us All’: Anthropic Researcher Quits Dramatically in c/technology@lemmy.world · 9 Sep 2026
oh yeah, it literally could just be robot dogs with “kill anyone who’s an insurgent, and detain anyone who assists insurgents” orders and AI to let them go buck wild with that prompt.
You could end up with children getting shot because an AI starts hallucinating if they don’t put adequate guard rails.
And that’s like a worst case situation. Realistically, you end up with just a lot more brutality in war because people are detached from the violence they cause as an invading force, and way less PTSD. Wars in the Middle East start sounding more and more like statistics that no one really wants to hear about, and there’s way less soldiers to choose to disregard unlawful orders.
You could see a fuck load more war crime with such human detachment, I think. We probably already deal with this to a large extent with drones.
Not that I’d prefer humans dying, but we should avoid robotic invasion wars like the plague imo.

on Bill Gates calls for ‘human-reserved’ jobs in face of AI takeover in c/technology@lemmy.world · 4 Sep 2026
The bulk of “AI layoffs” I agree are bullshit. They are using it as an excuse to increase quarterly profits while not signalling any weakness to investors, and in fact voicing layoffs in a way that make them sound competitive.
However … I work in software and am married to someone in the art industry. It’s definitely cut jobs in ways that might not be sustainable, but still cut jobs. They are barely hiring junior devs anymore. They think they can get away with tiny teams of seniors that use AI constantly.
And the art industry is changed forever. They simply don’t need certain artist jobs as much anymore. I know someone who would work with these people who buy images from photographers. They used to charge a ton for licensing. Now they skip the photographers and use AI and save a fuck ton of money doing it, and have actual artists clean up the AI artifacts. There is a lot less value in photography for certain industries.
And pay attention to writers who post about their job just disappearing. AI is being used to pump out writing material that used to be a career.
Is it sustainable? Maybe not. I think people have an eye for the AI slop and will spend less money on cheap looking services that prove they cut costs anywhere they can. But jobs have been cut.
-
on Bill Gates calls for ‘human-reserved’ jobs in face of AI takeover in c/technology@lemmy.world · 4 Sep 2026
I mean, it has cut jobs already… and replaced human talent with cheap slop.
It can make “art”. That art sucks, and is obvious where it’s used. Everyone hates the AI ads.
It can make “music”. Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s being used in places some people haven’t noticed, but probably ads or something where we tune out.
It replaced a lot of jobs that used to have human customer service reps… Shitty jobs that are soul sucking, but also jobs that paid people’s rent. And the customer service sucks more now, even worse than someone who’s
But the lie the investors bought was that it’d replace human labor. And less so, it’s the new “industrial age”. Nah. It’s like the industrial age in some respects, but for small sectors of labor where you don’t give a shit that the product is worse.
I feel like people make this weird mistake inspired by scifi that, if a tech becomes possible, it automatically fulfills some sci-fi prophecies about changing humanity. I think we keep making this mistake, and end up realizing well maybe it’s a bit more complicated, maybe there’s a cost we didn’t see, maybe there’s fundamental limits to its potential we didn’t see.
Just because you make a chatbot that can code doesn’t mean it can improve its own code exponentially. It just hasn’t, and not for the lack of their trying.

on Top economist warns that the AI math doesn’t make sense: 'Profits are currently being funded by investors rather than earned from customers' in c/technology@beehaw.org · 10 Aug 2026
Nah, I don’t think it’ll “ruin” the internet in the disaster sense. It’s already done enough that it ruined reddit, quora, other social media, but those weren’t really information sources as much as companies selling addictive brain rot to steal your data. They are not on the same level as wikipedia, or even representative or what the internet is. Even if you got useful stuff off reddit once upon a time, it was always about tracking you and capturing your data and making you addicted to wasting your time watching bullshit.
What we’re seeing and this “top economist” is saying is just “this is a bubble” in other words without saying the B word. People tune out the B word because they believe in the technology. A bubble has nothing to do with whether AI works, and all to do with the behavior of investors and unsustainable investments. So many people these days have to dance around the bubble word because people think it means you are anti-AI.
We will likely see things remain more or less the same except one day investors freak out and stop investing in AI, and then tech will go through a ton of shitty layoffs and people will struggle and some rich day trader type fucks will lose their livelihoods, just like the dotcom era. But after that, we will still have generative AI tools here and there, maybe more restricted to better use cases and not shoved in your face everywhere, but LLM will still be a thing.
Yeah, it means you’ll likely have fucked social media forever, bots, propaganda, fake news, fake AI videos of bullshit, but social media always was about controlling your thought patterns. It already fucking sucked. That part of the internet was always shit. But interconnected devices sending data to each other and allowing researchers in Oslo Norway to talk to researchers in Omaha Nebraska, that will still very much be alive and work well.

Sometimes those side effects can be permanent too, like eyes and tongue moving around without you wanting them to.
