• You can now root all Meta glasses github.com/Lumince/singularity/releases/

  You can also, without root, use Termux letting you install a local server on the device itself, use adb to start the browser on a WebXR page running on it, etc.

  So it’s possible to make it work and entirely offline, no Meta account, no app, all this without privacy concerns but that does require to tinker a bit.

• complexity is certainly very high for those compared to off the shelf stuff.

  but it tapers off very quickly, namely setting up the gateway might take half a day, pairing the first device might take an hour… but then the next 10 devices will probably take 10min.

• I just turned on my office light within Snap, an open source environment to teach kid programming, literally minutes ago. I didn’t even know that was possible 1h ago.

  As others pointed out the point isn’t to replace a switch, the point is to get efficient or creative or both with your home. Of course if your mind can handle a switch with a light bulb, no need to do more.

  PS: no data left my home, no WiFi requirement, no third-party proprietary app. Sure most “Smart Home” setup are horrible in many ways, both privacy and security, but it’s not because the most popular way sucks that all ways do.

• The vast vast majority of physical businesses accept cash, it’s mandatory in most countries, and thus are UYC by default. A lot of those, e.g. supermarkets or franchises, operate at scale.

• Termux on Android devices

  To give an example yesterday walking down the street I had an idea for a prototype (basically every morning my phone would generate an ePub with calendar, map of the area, notes, articles to read, etc) but I didn’t use some fancy voice assistant, no I started Termux on my phone, mkdir, echo idea > file, etc.

  I have notes on my wiki on …benetou.fr/…/SwappingPartsOfTheRestrictionStack on doing this kind of stuff on more than phones, VR headset, IoT, etc. Typically the heuristic is to still by modern hardware flash an open source firmware or OS then connect it to your tools that are already not enshittified or de-enshittified

• mostly against geoblocking when I want to watch public TV channels from while I’m not in the “right” country, e.g. when I want to watch PBS outside of the US, Arte outside of Europe (even though I dont think they block anymore), FranceTV outside of France, Ray out of Italy, etc.

  Sometimes also for blocked content, e.g. PirateBay in France or AnnaArchive in Belgium but typically for these public proxies are enough.

  Ah I also use self-hosted VPN for my own self-hosted services when I’m on the move but it is typically very small traffic.

  FWIW I’m not using a large commercial ISP, so trusting my ISP is a big part of my behavior.
