You should definitely not feel like an asshole for getting them on a safer app. You moved them off a predatory app. That’s good. I convinced my mom to get off Whatsapp because Meta kept trying to scam her into using the AI bullshit.

With Signal, it’s just messages. No ads, nothing trying to trick you into doing something against your benefit. It’s just messaging. That’s all she cares about.

The tl;dr is: you can use an LLM for private research, but you cannot use an LLM to write anything (except translations).

Overall, I’m a huge Fluxer fan. I think they’re doing the right things 90% of the time. I’ve never seen them enthusiastically embrace AI, but they haven’t been vocally anti-AI either. The LLM policy does basically seem like a ban though?

IDK. I suppose the large amounts of code churn may be a sign of AI? That’s definitely not conclusive though. Any software engineer will tell you running a code generator (not LLM, we have to regenerate our protobufs every time we change our API) or a code formatter or static analyzer (updates a bunch of files) or vendoring your deps (shout out to Go devs) will also inflate your line count.

I also checked out a few random files and they don’t look like the slop I’m forced to generate at work. I glanced at like 5 files. I guess Hampus could be tuning Claude to hide the AI slop better? IDK… this is all starting to feel like a conspiracy theory…

As of right now, Stoat does not feature any federation and it is not in our feature roadmap.

Yes, they optionally ask for money, which is GOOD. Hosting fluxer.app costs money. Infrastructure costs money. Hiring more devs costs money. Food costs money. Rent costs money. If the devs can’t pay their bills, then they’ll have to get some other job, which is BAD for the project.

Have you guys used Stoat?? It’s slow as hell. Last time I checked, they purposely disabled some of the calling features because they couldn’t afford the bandwidth on their public instances. Getting money is GOOD!

I guess some of the Matrix folks are a little miffted that Fluxer is eating their lunch, but dudes and dudettes, Matrix has a LOT of work to do on UI/UX to get people to use it. I convinced my programmer friends to switch to Matrix. We used Element. It sucked ass. Sure the encryption and tech is cool, but at the end of the day, if I can’t receive my friend’s messages because of some encryption roadblock, then it’s not useful. After a few days, everyone got fed up with Matrix and went back to Discord.

Fluxer has a familiar UI that people already know and like. It looks pretty, which matters. It’s true Open Source. They provide self-hosting. They’re working on federation (unlike Stoat). Mobile apps are just coming out. They’re getting funding so they can continue to focus on the project. It’s a real viable chance to take back some power from Big Tech that your friends would actually move to.

P.D. If you can actually convince your friends to switch to Matrix, then great. I managed to convince my small group of friends to try out Fluxer and we’re still on Fluxer, so I guess we moved. Let’s just get off of Discord!

Yeah, my work is forcing us to use Claude for everything now. More than ever, I’m convinced that using AI is slower and worse than me just doing it by hand.

UNLESS, if I blindly accept the output, then Claude is faster. Sure, I can close the ticket in 15 minutes. Is it right? Idk. Is it good? Idk. Does it have bugs? Idk. Did it make shit up? Idk. Did anything even get compiled or tested? Idk. The ticket is closed though and that’s all that matters, apparently.

Cool! I bought mine through Clove several months ago. This is great news! The Fairphone 6 is a pretty good phone. I’m happy with it.

The power button + volume buttons are in the perfect place…. for accidentally taking screenshots!!! :( That’s the one thing I don’t like, but everything else is good.

Oh, and I wish I could use either SailfishOS or at least Graphene. But, still. I don’t miss my old Pixel.

At least until the seeds disappear … storage isn’t infinite.

Which is why Radicle is kinda interesting… it seems like it may be kind of easy to have lots of different seeds in different places. I’m currently using radicle.garden as my main always-on seed. If they start having issues, I could self-host. If I start having issues, other randos also run Radicle seed servers. Someone who wants to download my project could use any one of these seeds and be guaranteed to get a legit version of the project.

If fact, it seems like the user doesn’t even have to care about where the code is hosted at all. A radicle clone looks like this:

There’s no indication of which servers to check. It just checks the “Radicle network” and clones from a random seed?? (I think?)

Smaller projects will have way less seeds, but if you use that project, you could contribute to their availability by seeding! You make a copy for yourself to keep your build going and you also help the rest of the network?!

(Again, juuust started looking into this, but it seems cool so far!)

You don’t even have to go full re, uh, I mean full self-hosted/P2P with it. You can sign up at https://radicle.garden/ and use that as your main seed/mirror thingy. radicle.garden is always online/available, so you don’t have to host anything, but you also get other randos seeding/mirroring your repo, adding more availability to your code.

I juuuust starting looking into Radicle, so I don’t fully have an opinion formed yet…

Uhh… yes? That’s the whole point of OptionsWrapper. To hide stuff otherOpts. It’s a wrapper.

This type of clanker output is why another slop coder opened a PR on one of our repos, angry because he said Claude said that one of our functions was deceptive. Claude said the description and docstring was misleading and we should change it.

Our function was called RunNoWait() and, hold on, you may be surprised by this, Claude was, what this function does is run something… and then it…. does… NOT wait. wtf. I know. Shocking. Misleading, deceptive name. Claude wrote some big manifesto about why the docs were misleading and rewrote the function to add a wait. 🤣

The dude backed down eventually, but he insisted we add more paragraphs of clarification to the function docs…

Whatever. Let the slop flow….. I give up.
