Others have correctly assessed the purpose of the ban. I would add that if you really wanted to help alleviate the social ills of SM, you would have to end corporate involvement with social media at all. Corporatism is just a more palatable form of fascism really, you can’t let profits dictate society and culture.
I would also, while I’m dreaming, say that governments should not run social media, and all SM should exist purely as non-commercial activities run by private parties. Like Lemmy. Any government is going to have just as perverse a motive in content moderation and policies as a corporation, and it’s too hard to prevent ideological bias from creeping in.
If SM should exist at all (I’m not 100p on that one myself), it should be fully formed by communities and private people, without permission, and without money or power politics added in.
I dunno about realistic ideas. This is in my wildest dreams.

TOS can’t protect a company from legal requirements, and I’m not clear on what the legal requirements are in terms of safeguarding and content moderation but my initial hunch is that they’re very lackluster. I hope that the suit will bring attention to this issue with legislative bodies, but I suspect that’s the most that can be realistically hoped for.

Haven’t spent much time on any RTS since… Gosh, I guess since C&C Generals. I tried to get into Total War: Warhammer but there’s just so much rigamarole with that one. I’ll definitely check out the demo, I’ve been waiting for a good reentry into this genre.

Okay, that’s worth knowing. It sounds ambitious, but for me a large game-as-simulation usually makes me think of Bethesda’s house style. Which is to say, treating everything as a toy rather than writing you into a story, in a way.
It’ll be interesting to see how GTA VI avoids the (what I see as) pitfalls of Bethesda’s way of thinking. Can a sufficiently advanced simulation take the place of a writing staff? Caveat - I know GTA VI will have some amount of a script in place, I just tend to notice that simulation style game design seems to prefer to create gameplay experiences dynamically through the environment, rather than through pre written story supported by gameplay elements. Games like this want your experience to be defined by interactivity, which necessarily deemphasizes the scripted aspects of a game.
It’s equally interesting to hear that there’s still a value proposition in creating your own proprietary game engine, rather than modifying the existing offerings. I’m a little against it as I’d prefer see more work done on open source like Godot, but I won’t dig in my heels about it because I know not every project is suitable for that sort of thing. It would be great if they could license out their engine to other developers at some point.

It does, I think! I’ve only played this series a little, and very distantly. Let me know if I’m close: So we’re talking about more than just satire but in a sense hyperbole, getting immersed in a setting with the vibes cranked up and slightly distorted. It’s a funhouse where all the mirrors are hilariously America-shaped, and the cartoon version of yourself it portrays becomes the satire.
Makes sense then that the more multiplayer experience of GTA V would have less time for the craft of that atmosphere, instead prioritising the delightfully crass verbs of GTA in the context of online gaming. Even a server dedicated to RP will tend to put a mirror up to the player, which probably detracts from the humour and vibe; self awareness takes you out of things, after all.

This is how you end up becoming a ‘critic’, in the sense of “this is someone who is media literate enough to speak more about whether a show has broken new ground creatively, rather than just saying whether they have succeeded in being merely entertaining”. A lot of people simply don’t care about the creative merits of a production and just want to be entertained, but enough of us are harder to please that good critics with worthwhile observations are always in demand.
I remember being taught about search operators in school. Of course they’d take that away, it’s such a powerful way to get exactly what you’re looking for, no bullshit.
