• yelling at sony isn’t how they are going to fix it. Stop buying their products will.

  I fail to see why we can’t and shouldn’t do both. I’m not personally going to harass them as I had already written them off, but voting with your wallet is not enough IMO. There needs to be public backlash to make sure that everyone knows that they suck and cannot be trusted. Many of their current customers weren’t even alive during some of Sony’s previous shitbag instances, I don’t expect them to know the history so let’s collectively make it known and tear their shit down. I want Sony as a company to know they are personally despised, not just see lower sales eventually. I want their employees to not want to admit who they work for because of how much they suck. Yes, I am very angry at them, and every other greedy shitty corp out there. Just passively walking away from them isn’t effective enough.

  All this being said, we’re clearing just arguing past each other here and not going to change either other’s mind., so I’m going to call it quits. Have a good one.

• Right, but people are still buying consoles. “Simply buy no more games” is a kick in the face if you just saved up to buy a console. “you don’t own the hardware” that’s nonsense, it is the only thing in the console gaming equation that you do own. I still own all my consoles going back to the Atari 2600, I most certainly own them. The console maker just has far more ability to screw you over in the modern consoles. I don’t know why you think people cannot be rightfully angry about this bullshit.

• It affects the existing products by rendering them worthless if the customer were only buying physical games. Since Sony is making themselves a pariah, it also means you’ll likely not be able to sell the existing PS5 for as much money because demand will go down. I am just imagining a scenario where some kid finally is able to get a newer console only to find out that they won’t be able to get games for it moving forward because they don’t have a credit card, are not allowed unrestricted internet access, etc. Their system is now frozen in time as of next year, no more games, they just got fucked.

• Tildes has a different vibe that lemmy. I am on both sites, and there is a reason I still go there. Most lemmy drama and bullshit wouldn’t be tolerated there. it is intentionally a slower, more polite community. It just isn’t as larger or “happening” as lemmy, and it certainly never will be.

• They’re actively screwing over the existing owners of their products. They have a right to be pissed if they bought hardware that is now less useful and worth less to them. Of course they should not give Sony any more money, but they are justified in being angry and letting Sony know it directly.

• I have one and every game I own is physical, like every other console I own. Now whether the games are in a workable state in the future without access to patches is another story, but I can lend, sell, trade my games and also never use PSN again if I want. From the state of things, it looks like I won’t every be buying another console and I can live with that.

• They do. They are huge, have poor software updates, and generally can’t be used with custom roms (hopefully this changes in the future), but bang for the buck the moto g line of phones is hard to beat. Weirdly, the 2024 and 2025 phones are the best to look at, the newer models are literal downgrades due to memory prices.

• From what I just read, initially only the top end Motorola phones will support GrapheneOS starting in 2027. So chances are all the existing phones won’t get support. Also, this sadly means it is unlikely that they’ll have a headphone jack. I am truly gutted.

• I can see it not working for everyone, but I already used custom ROMs and I don’t use basically any services on my phone. If you’re using GrapheneOS and using Google Play Services in a sandbox, it does get quirky and break some things. I didn’t want Google anywhere near my phone anymore. As soon as I can use the OS without a Pixel I’ll be doing that since I hate that I am even using their hardware.

• I am stuck with a shitty pixel with no headphone jack right now since my previous pixel, which DID have a headphone jack, finally died. I am not buying a new smartphone without one. Fairphone touts repairability and longevity, but by forcing people to either use shitty bluetooth headphones or put double duty on the charging port using a dongle is going to cause more waste. I am using a DAP for music right now so i can use my headphones, but it honestly sucks needing to use two devices when my phone would be perfectly capable of doing it had they not followed Apple’s greedy lead.

• One of the big reasons IP law exists as it was to encourage people to not hide innovations and keep them secret to themselves. If anything you (not you specifically as a person) spend time and resources to create can be trivially taken away from you if people know about it, you then either have to keep it secret or you simply have no incentive to make anything new. Now if your argument is that current IP law has been totally perverted and abused to extreme levels and should be completely redone, you’ll get no argument from me. Just killing IP laws entirely would pretty much break our current society. Maybe out of that chaos would come something better, but make no mistake, shit would be fucked in the meantime.
