Procedure: Both remotes had plastic tabs holding them together. I was able to pry them apart with a guitar pick (credit card would work too) and separate the body from the internal remote board. The Sony remote (Green circuit board) was kind enough to label the component as “MIC1” with the screen printing so I flipped it over and removed the black adhesive covering over the Mic hole. The Mic hole is very small and I did try a few things before settling for a #1 flathead screwdriver from my iFixIt kit. The irony of using that kit to destroy something is not lost on me here. Anyway, I placed the screwdriver into the empty Mic hole and applied firm even pressure and let the flathead dig into the board. I went slow and could tell I was making progress when the Mic component on the other side of the board lifted away. At that point I backed out the screwdriver and used tweezers to pull off the Mic. Then quick reassembly and testing and all functions were good!

For the Onn 4k Plus Streaming remote (Black circuit board) I was able to follow the same procedure above where I used the pick to open the remote, used the screwdriver to apply even pressure to screw into the Mic hole and lift the component from underneath until I could get tweezers under it. I did however encounter an issue where a copper trace lifted with the component. It was very thin and I peeled back only enough to get a razor blade under it and sever it from the board. Then re-assemble and tested with no issues. All in all, for me with experience taking electronics apart it was about 20 minutes of working. I have one more Onn remote and a Samsung remote with a solar charger on the back to do next.

To get ahead of the comments on why I didn’t use a razor blade or heat gun to remove the mic: I tried a razor blade at first on the Sony remote but discovered that the component was soldered so close to the board that I would have to destroy the screenprint to get underneath it. Unfortunately I don’t trust myself with a heat gun either since I didn’t have Kapton tape to protect the other components.

If there is enough interest I can post the reassembled remotes for matching them or images of the Samsung remote surgery when I do it as well. Hope you all find this encouraging for how to do it on your own!

When Croton-on-Hudson’s youngest students returned to school earlier this month, a familiar — and increasingly controversial — classroom tool was missing from their desks: iPads.

A new districtwide policy prohibits the devices in kindergarten through second grade with few exceptions. Instead, teachers are emphasizing traditional, hands-on learning through activities like games, puzzles, and pen-and-paper assignments.

The screen-free classrooms arrived after a grassroots effort from local parents in Croton-on-Hudson, an affluent, highly educated suburban village on the Hudson River, 40 miles north of Manhattan.

Formed in July 2025, the Croton Community Collective has amassed more than 400 local members, built a network of parents who’ve tried to give their children a screen-free childhood, reshaped the school board, and secured several changes limiting the use of educational technology in instruction

It’s part of a larger push by the community, where many parents have pledged to delay giving their children smart phones. Volunteers have stocked scores of local businesses with boxes of books and magazines, so that kids have a screen-free way to pass the time while waiting for a haircut or sitting at a diner. And over 100 families have installed landlines in their homes to help children stay connected sans cell phones.

I’ve been eyeing email aliasing services like Firefox Relay or Proton’s Hide-my-email feature for a while, but I’m cheap!
Well, that and I tend to like doing things myself whenever possible.

So after a bit of investigating I found out that using Cloudflare and a custom domain name, you can essentially get infinite free email aliases that get redirected to an existing email address (Gmail in my case, but I’m working on moving over to Proton at the moment).

One thing lead to another, and I ended up coding a Firefox extension to automatically inject aliases into email input fields using a custom domain name.

Because I find this whole setup cool, and am fairly certain that other people could benefit from it, I wrote up a full guide on my blog. I’m no Cloudflare or DNS expert, so feel free to point out any mistakes or make suggestions here or in my post’s comments ;).

Note: Yes, I know that using a custom domain reduced the privacy benefits.

hi. i’m looking for an extremely simple selfhosted photo gallery software. i have photos from my laptop, a camera, and my phone. they are all rsync’ed onto my server. so on the server I have ~/Pictures/Laptop ~/Pictures/Camera ~/Pictures/Phone filled with JPEG/PNG/HEICs and no subdirectories.

i want to view photos from all three directories on a single timeline/feed, from the web (and if possible, via a mobile app). currently I VNC onto the server to run XnView and check each directory and this is a terrible user experience especially on a phone.

i don’t want to run a separate database or anything complex, so things like Immich or Photoprism are not an option. would be nice to be able to assign a tag to some images (“work”, “computer”, …) but it’s not a necessity. and i don’t need the ability to edit/remove images from the gallery.

i’ve considered rolling my own solution but thought there might be something already available.

SYDNEY, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Australia is considering barring the use of camera-equipped smart glasses in government workplaces due to privacy and security concerns, in what it said could be the first ban of ‌its kind.

The government will separately convene a roundtable of the country’s biggest employers, including Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab, Commonwealth Bank (CBA.AX), opens new tab, telecoms firm Telstra (TLS.AX), opens new tab and energy company AGL (AGL.AX), opens new tab as it consults on a set of guidelines for AI in the workplace.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it was important that Australia, which ⁠last year became the first place in the world to ban social media for teens, put the “right protections in place as technology evolves”.

“I am proud that Australia is setting the world standard for digital safety,” he said in a statement on Thursday.

While smart glasses have been lauded by some sections of the community such as the visually impaired, there have been growing concerns globally that the devices can be used to covertly record and photograph people without their ‌consent.

Norway’s ⁠capital Oslo banned the glasses in schools last month, and the federal government is considering regulating their use. England and Wales have prohibited the use of Meta (META.O), opens new tab smart glasses in courts.

Katy Gallagher, Australia’s minister for public service, said she had asked the public ⁠service commission for advice on whether smart glasses capable of recording should be prohibited in government workplaces.

“Smart glasses can raise legitimate privacy and security concerns, particularly because of their ⁠ability to record and capture information, and we need clear and consistent guidance for public servants,” she said.

Companies selling smart glasses are also facing ⁠legal challenges from the private sector. A German advocacy group has filed a criminal complaint against Meta and others involved in selling the Meta devices, citing privacy laws.

They’re not even the same currency at all, yet Steam or any other digital storefront decides to price a 80€ ($91) game the same as a $80 (69€) one when the conversions in reality are different to what the algorithm suggests. It turns out you can make a really fast instruction decoder in Scrap Mechanic if only you can figure out a special bit mask for each ALU operation. It turns out this is really frickity fucking hard to do by hand so I told a SAT solver to do it and it was fine until I asked for all the combinations I wanted and then… This.

Also also it turns out using 100% of all 24 cores on a laptop for 8 hours makes for some heat issues so I had to limit each core to 50% utilization so it will take twice as long yay.

UPDATE: it’s been 18 hours and the best it’s got it 3.925%. If I linearly extrapolate, it will take 400-500 hours ≈ 2.5-3 weeks.

UPDATE 2: I’ve turned it off, as I don’t have more than a weekend to just leave my laptop sitting around.
