So, this is the place where I’m going to be generally hanging out and trolling around, while my Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Blacksky accounts are going to be primarily art posting accounts, and I also have a Nooki account.
I’m also going to start to be active more on here than on lemmy.org, so I’m making this my primary Lemmy account now.
I’ll link the other socials I’m varying levels of active on below, plus my lemmy.org account which I’m demoting to my secondary account if that instance is going to be more unstable from now on.

So, the EU Digital ID is threatening to kill alt Android and Linux phones, but this is also probably gonna screw over desktops too, because going by how it’s laid out by Mental Outlaw here, desktops could start being required to run Win11 with Pluton enforcement to comply with this, which would not only lock out Linux and BSD desktops, but also older desktops in general which can’t run Win11, and even older desktops which can run Win11 but are too old to support Pluton, meaning just like you have to buy a new Google or Apple phone to comply with this, you’d also have to buy a new Win11 desktop or laptop as well.

Also, if you think the Fediverse is gonna be safe from this, then I have bad news for you. Also, decentralized networks in general could be targeted by this sorta thing if what happened to A/I is any indication.
What happened to those Mastodon instances and to A/I is proof that even decentralized networks can be targeted by censorship.

It’s even sadder when you consider that SOPA caused a mass blackout protest which ultimately got it hidden away until its chance to reappear and this time maybe actually become law.
No one’s doing any sort of mass blackout protests this time around.
Not gonna matter when apps and services start blocking Linux, or even worse, should this shit creep up the chain to the ISP level and should ISPs start requiring an Apple, Google, or MS OS just to get online to begin with.
And hypothetically that reCAPTCHA could also serve as an ID of sorts:
- Any Google account verified 18+ gets full web access.
- Any Google account 14-17 gets mildly restricted access.
- Any Google account 9-13 gets heavily restricted access.
- Any Google account 8 and under or anyone without a Google account is locked out entirely.
… That could be a pretty effective way to completely lock down the web. And then moving everyone back to time-sharing on rented terminals will be the final nail in the coffin for personal computing. If Big Tech gets their way, personal computing could be killed off by thin clients or terminal apps connected to a rented cloud server.
I could easily see things like Discord, Meta, Google, Reddit, and Twitter doing this if it came to that, for instance.
As I pointed out, and is already actively underway on mobiles with regards to GrapheneOS and LineageOS, apps and services could always start blocking Linux.
The Linux exemptions in Cali and Colorado bring up something else if that gets followed on a broader scale: Can’t apps and services just start blocking Linux and start specifically demanding Windows or Mac?
That would kill the Fediverse and other alternatives too, though, because they wouldn’t be allowed to exist by said regulations. What you’re suggesting is gonna result in vendor lock-in by making it impossible for smaller competition to comply.
I’d say good luck extending this to desktops, but MS might beat them to the punch if this becomes standardized and apps/sites start blocking alt OSes like Linux or BSD and start vendor-locking to Windows for age-gate DRM purposes.

And if you’re maxing out any lossy codec, that’s the point where your only intention is to make a file smaller than you can do with lossless, while still having no audible degradation between that lossy copy and the uncompressed or lossless original file, although you could also settle for transparency in the case of codecs like Opus or even Vorbis where their max bitrate is higher than their transparency rate for even smaller files.
In the case of older codecs like MP3, supposedly its transparency bitrate of 320kbit/s CBR is also its max bitrate, but there’s decades of debate over whether 320kbit/s CBR or V0 VBR is superior for that codec, such as this HA thread from 2008 on the matter. As for MD/ATRAC, its transparency bitrate, and also its max bitrate and the native bitrate for the MD format, is 292kbit/s CBR.
For the curious, the two bitrates for MD/ATRAC that fall below its transparency bitrate are 132kbit/s (MD LP2) and 66kbit/s (MD LP4).
Analog art or crafts (get your crayons out, kids, or put on your smocks because we’re painting today). My fave media personally right now are crayons, chalk, or oil pastels for drawing or water-based markers and a brush pen filled with water or watercolors or acrylics + watercolor crayons for painting currently. Like, Crayola markers are really fun to paint with when you go to blend them with a wet brush.
If going digital, using open alternatives to the Adobe suite, I personally use a combination of RawTherapee and GIMP for editing photos because it works for me so far.
You can still buy used older digicams that are still respectable even by modern standards, there’s plenty of old DSLRs which fit that bill, for example, even going back as far as '07 with the Sony a900 boasting a resolution that is still by all means a very respectable resolution by modern standards at 24.6MP, plus it should be able to work with the entire A-mount range even going back to legacy screw-drive lenses, let alone ‘modern’ Sony servo-drive A-mount glass.
You could buy a bunch of CDs and rip them to FLAC, and then transcode those lossless rips to lossy copies as desired, eg. transcoding them to 160-510kbit/s* Opus copies for storage-limited devices.

And beyond that, it’s not like you can’t migrate to Blacksky or another third-party PDS, or even host your own PDS if you have the hardware and admin chops for it, although you can also self-host on the Fediverse too, and there’s thousands of instances on the Fediverse vs. a handful on ATproto, plus other than Blacksky who are supposedly completely independent from Bsky’s corporate infrastructure, most third-party PDSes and pretty much all self-hosted PDSes still have to interact with Bsky’s corporate infrastructure at some point where if you host a Fediverse instance, you own the whole thing.
If Bluesky dies and the users go back to Twitter, they never believed in anything more than ‘I want to be part of the herd.’
