• It was a good show overall, but I agree that the ending was unsatisfying. Lara wanting to peace out and live on her own in a completely different city felt like it came out of nowhere and lead to nothing.

• I would’ve been happy with a “this series is about Lara’s love for Mari” ending, or a “this series is about Lara’s love for the friends she met along the way” ending, but “Lara suddenly decides she’s gonna leave everyone and peace out for… reasons…” was very abrupt and unfortunately has lowered my opinion of the show a bit.

• I’ll definitely be watching Apothecary Diaries season 3, The Ramparts of Ice, and Blue Box season 2. I might give Rayearth a try as well, since I’ll likely have the time. • Depends on what you like. A few things that have been airing lately that are really good:

  • You and I Are Polar Opposites - low-stress romance; very cute
  • Daemons of the Shadow Realm - action adventure thing from the writer of Fullmetal Alchemist
  • Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia - somewhat unusual; the story of a mongol slave who wants revenge on those who took everything from her
  • Goodbye, Lara - a modern Little Mermaid story

  Some things that are less recent, but still excellent:

  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - possibly the best action-adventure anime ever made
  • Gurren Lagann - cool shit with giant robots
  • Journal with Witch - A solitude-loving author takes in her niece after the death of her sister
  • Kaguya-sama: Love is War - Two incredibly prideful high-schoolers fall in love with each other, each trying to trick the other into admitting it first
  • Brave Bang Bravern! - big gay robots
  • Re:ZERO - A dumbass gets transported to a fantasy world; his only power is that he goes back in time whenever he gets killed. He generally has a bad time, and it’s only partially his fault. The second-hand embarrassment can be rough sometimes in the first season especially, but it’s otherwise a really fun show.

  If you specifically wanted stuff aimed at female fans both Jaadugar and Journal with Witch definitely qualify.

• It’s gotta be The 100 Girlfriends Who Really Really Really Really REALLY Love You. Starting out, you wish you were Rentarou. By the time you’ve finished the first couple season you’ll just wish you were dating him instead.

  Reverse? Ouran is a classic for a reason. Btw, for those who don’t know the Ouran anime doesn’t even cover half of the manga so I’d definitely recommend giving it a read as well.

• You seem to be misunderstanding my problem with the scene. My problem isn’t with him breaking his rule about not letting commoners look down on the nobility (not that words of encouragement would’ve broken that anyways). My problem is with the show wanting me to believe that the guy who disowned the main character, and showed up here just to cause problems for him, somehow cares enough to say anything at all just because a clown asked him to.

• Hard to pick a “best”. Both Fullmetal Alchemist soundtracks were pretty good. I also really liked the .hack//sign soundtrack even though the show itself was boring af. Dan Da Dan and Gurren Lagann both had some inspired choices (fight the power!).

  The Legend of the Galactic Heroes OVA is an obvious contender; it uses exclusively classical music for its soundtrack and it works really well. I can’t hear Dvorak’s 9th Symphony 4th Movement without thinking of people dying in space now.

• Just a reminder that Emilia is a throne candidate, and the world forgetting her completely breakes the power balance in between the other candidates.

  I had the same thought, but things are such a mess right now that with Gluttony right there before them it’s hard to believe that this whole memory loss thing won’t be resolved by the end of the arc. Keep in mind that Crusch is in a similar boat, though not quite the same one.

  This episode had some insane action scenes

  No kidding; that was quite something! They put space in his cape!

• I watched Wolf Children, and you know what? Best Hosada film (that I’ve seen). It’s not even close. It turns out Hosoda can make a good movie when he’s not trying to shove metaverse bullshit into it.

  I also went and got caught up to Goodbye, Lara. Wow! This is a great show! in a normal season it would be an easy pick for my #1 but right now it’s difficult to choose between this and Daemons of the Shadow Realm, Re:Zero, and Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia.

  Kinda fun that I watched these two things in the same week; they’re the closest things I’ve seen to Miyazaki movies that didn’t have Miyazaki’s involvement.

• I often see people assuming Fragrant Flower is shoujo, Kaguya-sama is either shounen or shoujo, Blue Box is shoujo, and Chainsaw Man is seinen.

  The base assumptions seem to be “There’s a love story where we’ve gone two chapters in and the female lead hasn’t stripped yet??? Must be shoujo!” and “Wow that’s a lot of blood, must be seinen.”

• I cannot remember the title off the top of my head, but I remember reading about at least one manga that changed the magazine it was originally serialised in to reach a different market segment.

  Vinland Saga did this. There are others, but that’s the one that comes to mind.

• So, publishers know full well that it’s not just teenage boys reading shounen stories. There are actually more girls reading shounen than there are girls reading shoujo. For this reason a lot of stories that appeal to both end up being published as shounen, whereas stories that are more likely to only appeal to girls get published as shoujo. The same thing happens with seinen and josei; lots of adult women read seinen stuff, whereas it’s less common for adult men to read josei stuff. Seinen magazines have also been around for a lot longer than josei magazines, so sometimes if a mangaka wanted to publish something spicy in a shoujo magazine it would end up getting rejected and getting published in a seinen magazine instead if the publisher and the mangaka thought they could swing it.

  This one I don’t have stats on, but I suspect there are more adults reading shounen/shoujo than there are kids/teens reading seinen/josei. The big shounen magazines are really big, so if the mangaka for a story like Frieren thinks their story appeals to everyone it makes sense to pitch it with the big shounen magazines first.

  It’s both. It’s telling you “hey, if you’re a teenage boy you’re more likely to like this.” It’s also telling you that the writing is less likely to be difficult to read or understand. Once you’re familiar with what gets published for these demographics it tells you all sorts of things, really.

• I agree with most of this, but the idea of a classic big three is something that only exists in your head. I’d argue Legend of the Galactic Heroes is better than any of those three, and it aired at about the same time.

  Mirai and Belle were both pretty mediocre imo.

  Perfect Blue wasn’t bad or anything, but it needs a “this movie is generally fucked up” content warning.

  Tokyo Godfathers is probably the best Christmas movie in anime.

  Summer Wars has kind of a nonsense plot but it’s such an accurate depiction of a family reunion that watching it makes me feel nostalgic anyways.
