Here, using high-resolution satellite-retrieved data and interpretable machine learning techniques, this study quantified the impact of NEVs on atmospheric pollution, specifically particulate matter particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 μm or less, and evaluates the corresponding health benefits. By 2023, NEVs led to reductions of 23.80% in particles with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less (8.97 µg m−3) and 30.67% in carbon monoxide (0.26 mg m−3), resulting in the prevention of approximately 262,000 non-accidental deaths and 75,000 all-cause deaths, respectively.

It’s not. That’s half the joke.

Trump climbed into the White House through a series of reasonably clever suck ups and betrayals. Modern AIs routinely lose at checkers - a game that was computationally solved twenty years ago.

Trump’s a used car salesman pushing Americans into a lemon. He’s not fooled by AI. He’s just sponsored by the AI companies.

Pagerank was built on the Markov Model, which became the core of modern LLM graph design.

It was a precursor technology, not an independent system, which used Hyperlinks rather than word tokens to form associations.

So much of the complaint around AI isn’t even the LLM part. It’s the weighting and censorship of certain sources and data, convinced with the masking of results behind natural language output templates.

You had the first problem under Pagerank already (Google Bombing and “shadow banning” of sources the company didn’t find reliable). The second is entirely a product of the interface and has nothing to do with the heuristics of the program.

Gen-AI use is fine

It’s really not. There’s already enough procedurally generated GACHA crap. Plus the games that are barely more than T&A Simulator. Hooking this up to the AI pipeline and blasting it into Steam or some similar digital games marketplace is bordering on an act of violence.

It doesn’t make a gamedev any holier or respectable if they torture themselves by hand drawing 1000 unique titles and textures for bookspines for some NPCs bookshelf.

I mean, this is what really separates the Men from the Boys when it comes to game development. You come at this thinking “Aha, what kind of dumbshit would have 1000 unique ideas for tiles and textures? How could that possible add to a player’s experience?” And yet this is exactly what makes a FromSoft game or a Hideo Kojima title or a top tier FF title or old school Blizzard or Bioware or Ubisoft or Nintendo game stand out from the pack.

The loving attention to detail. The craftsmanship and creativity and invention, when translating an idea into a digital asset. The fact that it isn’t just a reskinned cracker box CTRL+C, CTRL+V’d a thousand times across a janky looking brick wall.

You begin to see a game’s age and lack of care when an expansion comes out and people are saying “X is just a reskin of Y” in the reviews. You see its strength when you’re on your 100th hour of Eldin Ring or your eighth Resident Evil game, in a location you’ve never been getting blindsided by a creature you’ve never seen before.

Ditching Google is good, but not for AI.

LLMs and their precursors were always how search engines compiled and ranked their search results. Google has been using some form of AI to build up its base of information for decades.

The absurd turn of the last decade was Google C-level pivot from engagement through useful results to engagement through bad results that force you to click around on the site longer. “How do we get more ad interaction?” became the question that dominated the development of their technology.

That’s what enahittified their website. Not “AI”.

The number of these damned gaming commentators complaining about “woke in games” is exhausting.

Alternatives exist. There’s a guy I listen to named Felix Biederman who has done exhaustive rundowns of Metal Gear Solid and Dark Souls. He manages to get out 4+ hours of content an episode without worrying about “Woke” even once. Then you’ve got classics like PennyArcade which remain a bastion of politics-neutral gaming content and coverage.

But if you’re just cruising on the back of the algorithm… yeah. Your Asmongolds and Pewdiepies, who go full Hitler because it got attention through negative reaction, are predictably toxic. And then you’ve got the Mr. Beast style of producer who has turned slopifying the algorithm into a passion project.

Light Yagami started out with an overinflated ego and impaired self control by virtue of being a teenager with good grades. He likely was also already a psychopath (though you can’t give that diagnosis to a minor). He’s effectively the male Japanese version of Elizabeth Holmes. That’s what led to him becoming a megalomaniac.

Should be noted how Misa Amane isn’t really corrupted, just gulled into Light’s cult of celebrity and used up by his machinations.

I think a few more characters with a hand on the Death Note would have made the story better, to play out it’s influence on the user.

Republicans had to explicitly grant an exemption to the industry back in 2005, in response to a wave of lawsuits successfully pinning manufacturers with responsibility for proliferation and criminal misuse.

Even despite this liability protection, Remington Arms’ four insurance companies paid a $73 million settlement with Sandy Hook plaintiffs in 2021 regarding its alleged violations of state law (specifically Connecticut’s Unfair Trade Practices Act). Although PLCAA protections had been raised by the manufacturer in Sandy Hook negotiations prior to the settlement, a similar but entirely separate case had been declined by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2019 (Remington Arms Co. v. Soto).

So there’s ample precedent.

Trust But Verify is a good policy regardless of where your code comes from.

“AI” code is still human code in some capacity. Human code is what it was trained on. What would you do with a module you grabbed off GitHub or a script you found on Discord? Hopefully the same thing.

Second, there are more personal costs. You’ll come to rely more and more on these tools, and your skills will rust.

I mean, if you’re curious and you’re diligent, you can learn from what the AI chugs out. Skills only stagnate when you trust the AI blindly.

I’d say the bigger problem is that when you’re outsourcing junior coder work (even the tedious stuff) to a machine, you’re not investing in new junior coders.

Idk. These systems always love to overpromise on both ends - big profits for investors, big savings for customers. It reads like a fairy tale coming and going.

Do get the sense that these third-party sites are going to become an increased necessity, as data-scrappers and trackers try to peg the price of a flight to the credit card limit of the buyer.

But… idk, I’m not seeing anything on this site that I can’t find by directly querying individual airlines. (Like so many other budget airline calculators) there’s no inclusion of Southwest on the list. And if the odd deal is inevitably just going to be through JetBlue anyway? Why not shop direct?

The best games ever made and “uhh it’s balatro but with throwing darts”.

Aside from being addictive, Balatro’s a popular game because it plays well on any medium. Deck-builder rogue-likes are phone friendly, PC friendly, and not entirely unapproachable on console.

AAA and “real indie games” are a tiny minority of the games on steam.

That’s all true. But even if we cut out the click-bait and the slop, lots of games fail on their own merits.

240 games in 2026 “worth spending money on” is not a dire portrait of AAA slurping up the market space.

Yeah, I absolutely agree. Adding in the denominator counts for a lot. I might caveat that with the question “Are those 240 games any good?” Because it’s very possible that slop games are what pull in all the revenue, while quality titles flounder. But, again, that would require some real actual journalism instead of click-bait rage-bait headlines.

Incidentally, has anyone asked about the state of game journalism recently? What are those stats looking like?

For every one Assassin’s Creed there are ten Peaks and Slay the Spires and lower quality “real, good indie games”.

I’ll spot you that for every Assassin’s Creed, there’s ten lower quality games. Probably closer to 100 lower quality games, tbh. But to suggest that there’s ten “Slay the Spire” games for every one AC? You’ve got to be kidding. Slay the Spire is exceptionally good as a deck-based rogue-like. I don’t know if I could find ten other games in the entire Steam store that compare properly. Absolutely in its own league.

And for every real, good indie game there’s a hundred asset flips and ai slop “games”.

Even games that aren’t asset flips or AI slop can be very hit-or-miss. There’s tons of mediocre JRPGs. There’s tons of Farmville-style endless click simulators. There’s puzzle games galore. There’s bad ports of older titles. There are games with crummy interfaces and miserable learning curves and needlessly graphic art.

I tried out Stellar Blade recently. And while I enjoyed the combat mechanics, the fundamental quality of the art was good, and the dialogue was… fine, I couldn’t get over the fact that I was piloting a woman in skin-tight lingerie against Dick and Ball monsters. Gave up inside the first chapter.

Tales of Arise had absolutely miserable writing. Monster Hunter: Stories was fun for maybe 5 hours before I’d figured out the mechanics and bored by the flat, unimpressive landscapes. Darkest Dungeon 2 failed to meaningfully improve on the original, while tossing in a bunch of extra mechanics that just made the game feel clunky.

Making a good game is hard even when you do it properly.

Sales tend to be proportional to the marketing budget. You see this in every entertainment media. Movies and Music, in particular, will have marketing budgets equal or in excess of the actual production costs.

It isn’t simply that 1% of the games make 110% of the money. It’s that 1% of the games get a marketing allowance at all, while the majority of indie projects and first round game offerings just get spat out into the void with little more than a whisper.

Their competitors have already sold out their entire 2027 production.

Plenty of which will inevitably turn up on the secondary market.

The money they make selling RAM to private consumers is not even 1 promille of their revenue.

The RAM they sell to home-labbers and hobbyists, sure. The RAM they’re selling to Dell and Lenovo and Apple? A significantly higher chunk of their revenues. But that’s a side issue. These kinds of RAM sticks are largerly fungible.

The new high end AI datacenters are building out specialty hardware that isn’t PC compatible. And the real worry is that these firms migrate over to the AI datacenter designs in a way that causes a semi-permanent shortage on the independent PC side.
