• Fallout 4 a high? I think many will agree that the previous entries in that series (both NV and 3) where better and that this game, while neither great nor terrible, was the beginning of the downfall (overhyped, buggy, little innovation, okay-ish graphics, most interesting stuff in DLC)

• Agreed. If you don’t use AI in coding you are not competitive with someone who does. It really is that simple. You won’t be able to keep up, your bosses will see, you will get fired and that’s that.

  Even if the quality you deliver without AI is better, quality is not everything. Time is always a factor and AI beates you ten times over. The rest is sane flows with lot’s of testing etc.

• The European Union must itself become a technology giant

  I don’t know where people constantly get the idea it isn’t. Show me any US military tech (besides simple bullets and explosives maybe) that doesn’t contain a single piece designed and/or made in Europe. Right in the thumbnail there is ASML, which employs countless European suppliers to maintain a de-facto monopoly. Europe is also leading in many scientific disciplines and a lot of companies develop their stuff here because of the easy access to top-tier scientists.

  I don’t want to say the Europe is the best place on earth and excels at everything, but I can’t stand this constant doomsaying. What is it with the complete lack of self-confidence here? We’re famously snobbish about food and culture. In every other regard people act as if they’re embarassed we don’t shove billions down the throat of already rich assholes creating image chatbots that tell people to eat glue, or the smart rocks that power them

• I feel like you could also provide protection for smaller countries through law and the ECJ, or legislative procedures/instruments other than vetos. For example laws to prevent decisions that are overwhelmingly negative for few countries, processes that direct compensation to countries negatively affected by laws, or a veto leading to a compulsory mediation process rather than a full stop.

• I won’t miss writing code. In part because I still do when I feel like it, but also because most of the time it is extremely boring. A mere mean to a goal for which you probably have the path mapped out in your brain already. It is basically just busywork at that point.

  There are these moments where you need to squeeze out performance, where you change something about the UI or generally visuals and get a pleasing result, or where you discover a small tweak that collapses a lot of complexity you originally planned for - but that is, in my humble experience, not the norm in programming. The vast majority of code is boilerplate or stuff you have already written a thousand times in some variation. The more experience you have the worse it gets.

  I was ecstatic when I realized how good agents have gotten, realized how I could focus on design and architecture and with small corrections, get more than adequate software. Because for me personally, programming is the least fun part of software development. Most of the time that is. And you can hate it all you want, but programming is a skill worth nothing on its own now, and it will never be again. You can take solice in the fact that you can still do it for fun if you want to.
