Nicht Deutsch, sondern Englisch (oder nicht einmal Englisch, sondern nur die Sprache, in der die Website geschrieben ist, ohne viele Sprachen zu mischen). Zudem spielt die ethnische Herkunft der Menschen für die gesprochene Sprache kaum eine Rolle. Die meisten Englischsprechenden stammen nicht aus dem Land, in dem das Englische ursprünglich entstanden ist. Würde jeder von uns seine eigene Sprache verwenden (meine ist übrigens gar nicht Englisch), müssten Foren ständig Echtzeitübersetzungen einsetzen. Das würde all die zuvor genannten Probleme verursachen und uns für die Kommunikation von solchen Übersetzungstools abhängig machen. Ich weiß, es gibt Leute, die nicht wollen, dass Menschen über einen kleinen, leicht kontrollierbaren Kreis hinaus miteinander kommunizieren können. Aber ich gehöre nicht dazu. Ich betrachte Kommunikation als etwas Positives; deshalb halte ich eine Lingua franca für sinnvoll. Es könnte auch Esperanto sein, aber für mich ist Englisch völlig in Ordnung. Als Gegenbeispiel habe ich diesen Kommentar automatisch ins Deutsche übersetzt, um leichter verständlich zu machen, worum es mir geht.

The obsession with multilingual is ruining internet.
If you look at Reddit now you have posts which are written in several different languages because everyone relies on backend automatic translation or browser automatic translation. But those content become hard read by anyone not using these technologies. Harder to properly archive in a readable manner, and dependent on expensive tech as AI translation.
This multilingual, everything is in your language, internet is one of the worse things that has happen to the net. I’m tired of having to change my settings all the time to be able to see what the original person wrote, or spoke in the case of automatically translated videos".
On a paranoid note, this might be a plan so people stop learning english so we won’t be able to communicate with each other without their translation technologies.

I’m a little paranoid, so this is my security set up.
SSH, blocked at firewall level, only allowing specific local IP to access port 22. Also authentication is done by key, with password disabled.
Most services are local only and I access them through wireguard VPN when I’m outside my home.
For services that need a domain name and be public facing, I use a reverse proxy, with the following protections:
- Very restrictive geoIP block, only my country can access.
- Restrictive rate limiting.
- Crodwsec, with community lists, a pluging for open lists, community rules and my own very restrictive set of rules for banning attackers. (For instance as soon as the requested path contains “.env” that’s an instant ban, no second chances).
- Monitoring through grafana.
- Some complex services that need a valid tls handshake but I only want to use them myself have a setup when they are technically open to the net, to get let’s encrypt, but the server rejects every IP request but mine.
Recently I also reduced some noise, surface attack, deleting the A register from my second level domain and using an obscured target for the CNAME records. I also want to delete the www subdomain as it gets a lot of uneeded noise.

You have anything online you will be hammered by bots trying to get through. That’s the sad reality of the world we live on. It has been like that forever. I get hundreds of bot malicious scans on my server each day.
All that’s left is to secure everything as hard as you can so they cannot break through.

EU lobbies won’t ever allow it.
In the later years the EU regulations have been massively disappointing. Only favouring big EU companies and destroying little businesses and the european consumers.

I 100% understand and support why the moved away from google.
And Motorola was a good choice. But they really should have supported some budget phones.
A pixel series a could easily be found for under 500€ new. These flagship motorola phones are all way over 1000€.
And the developer clearly said they had currently no intention to support cheaper motorola phones. Among other things because Motorola won’t offer 7 year updates for anything but these flagships.
So, I get it. But let’s face it that people on a budget will keep using pixels for GOS while they are maintained.

I don’t think it holds as “destruction of evidence”.
Is like they try to get a confession out of you. You don’t want to say anything and they say that the words you didn’t say are “destructed evidence”.

There is this YouTuber that is like crazy for the game, always talking about it, saying that’s going to be the best game of the world, that nothing could go bad, that Rockstar is like some kind of elves making ancient jewelry. I just want to see his completely breakdown if the game is shit.

I straight up said, “if I wanted to talk with chatgpt I know the website”. And stopped the conversation right there.

It’s 100% scrappable. Nothing there stops me for scrapping the true text. It’s a very minor inconvenience at most. I would even argue that’s more of a pain for users and developers than for scrappers.

The advertisement algorithm is pretty much understood. It depends on wishlist and first day sales.
It’s not like Gabe, or anyone, is sitting there deciding which game gets advertised and which game isn’t. As far as algorithms go, steam one is pretty straightforward and fair afaik.

That’s just economy when you try to sell anything, specially anything art related.
If you made any art and try to sell it in any store the most probably amount of money made is the same number in every currency.

I professionally work in IT without formal education or any related career. It’s one field where you can really teach everything yourself with free online resources.
In fact my self hosting journey has taught me things that were later useful for work. I consider it part of my informal education.

I do think it would go slightly against the vine they want to achieve, that is to have link aggregators more than search engines. Though I don’t think it would be impossible to build a search engine. It would be complicated, constricted and would need to do some tricks here and there, but I think it would be possible.
I have also thought that it would be great if there were a firefox extension that let you browse gemini. I don’t know if it would be possible, but it would probably had a nicer interface than lagrange.

It’s fun. It has a few rough edges I would love to be fixed.
The format would make you think that’s perfect for phone browsing, it’s just text so ot should adapt easy to small screens. Well, I’ve found too many capsules that write newlines for formsting text based on a traditional desktop expected screen size. I think there should be more geminiettiquete about not making the format of the page expect any aspect ratio or size.
On the web we have css to fix that and do fancy formats that can adapt everywhere. In gemini there’s no css so publishers should avoid trying to aim for a hardcoded expected aspect. As that could break the viewing experience for many users.
Other that that it’s quite fun to read some of the little pages out there.

What I meant for “multilingual internet” is what companies like Reddit or Google are doing. Forcing automatic translates to the user language automatically.
For Reddit this means that, as people write there in whatever language instead of the language of the subreddit, when you use the site outside of the official frontend you see a mix of languages. This means that you search for things in one language and get results written in another language, and you might have been looking for something in a specific language, but as automatic translated websites take over they take away your ability to choose in what language do you want to search things. On youtube for instance I cannot longer know in what language the video is going to be spoken. I might look for videos in one language and get mislead by the automatically translated title, and click into the video and get a shitty AI voiceover instead of the original voice of the video.
For instance I used to search things in Spanish to get “local” websites. Now I search in spanish and I see a bunch of Reddit post about the USA, because reddit forces the translated results into googles feed, and google accepts it. Searching something in a specific language is becoming harder and harder because more and more websites are going multilingual, taking in and serving out any and all languages and doing a bunch of automatic translations in the middle.
Maybe your perception is different. But for me this forced multilingual internet (and what I mean to this is that the frontends automatically translate the content in the business layer) makes for a poor experience with far less freedom and power over the content I choose to see, compared to what I had before.
And also the appreciation, that this might lead to more people not seeing the need of learning a second international language. Which, for me, is one of the most important skills in life, as it gives you the ability to communicate with so many people without being dependant on intermediates.
