If you’re on a computer that can’t run a web browser in 2026 I’m out of words honestly.

Not everyone can afford all of your Steam Decks or whatever. I am sure there are plenty of people who have to either go do something else while a site loads or browse like this:

Obviously not running much of any browser games there, apart from web form quizzes.

Godot exported to the web would definitely run worse than a game made directly for the browser.

Yes, that’s for lazy bastards to try the game for placebo when it would be actually faster to install, or for little Timmy to play on a school computer.

You waste a few hundred megs of disk storage and a few gigs of RAM to get the same shit as totaljerkface.com/happy_wheels.tjf but with achievements.

Was about to mention the Flash version at happy_wheels_flash.tjf but they broke it. Ran fine at least last year, I tried it.

The only good thing I see here is offline support, although someone could code it as a userscript using “service workers”. I know the totaljerkface won’t, because money. If you really want, you could just open the Newgrounds demo (featuring the Flash exclusive “Green hills” level) in desktop Ruffle. You will get bored of it after a bit but if you get a few dozen more Flash games it’s fine. Oh, and the actual Newgrounds page for it has controller support, it says so in the sidebar. One of the things advertised on Steam is controller support, so I guess that’s nothing new as well… On Newgrounds it’s not analog, but I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t be using a dpad here anyway.

It is the original menu 35 second .ogg from 2010 (SuperPretzel.ogg). It is showing “featured levels”, I don’t know when that was finalized but probably around that time.

So, what is is it? The web version + a web browser shoved onto Steam? The flash version and flash player shoved onto Steam (like “Transformice”)? The mobile version?

The system requirements say “Any GPU with WebGL” which sounds like it’s the fucking web browser one, although the actual game uses a 2D canvas and not WebGL I am pretty sure.

EDIT: yup it’s a browser. For a free to play browser game.

Anyways:

What the actual fuck does a package manager do?

Well, it doesn’t matter much, actually.

If you actually wonder, it’s a database (can be sqlite, tho most write their own which involves it’s own set of quantum physics and mathematics for operations) of stuff that’s installed and stuff that’s available. “Updating repos” downloads the list of stuff and their dependencies. Actually installing involves it downloading an archive, extracting it, looking at some special file that describes it (list of files, version, hash…), doing verification stuff, checking if dependency constraints are met (again, involves database mathematics…), adding the info of the package to the “installed” database then just extracting the entire archive EXCEPT the describing/meta/special/whatever file(s) right into your root. Or whatever you told it is root.

You can make a tiny bootable Linux by literally extracting some critical packages from, for example, Alpine Linux, using your average GUI archive viewing tool.

OpenRC & SystemD

OpenRC is an init system. It’s a system that starts (inits) different programs meant to be ran all the time (daemons).

SystemD is a suite of software. It has a few fucktons of components. Although in the context of an init system they mean the init system SystemD comes with. It may not be that bad by itself, but the other components are often poor in quality and/or resource heavy. Most distributions ignore most of them by default. And yet, everything is relying on them to the point where people who don’t want the entirety of SystemD had to rewrite SystemD’s components for themselves, and not the other way around.

Wayland

Protocol with a few fucktons of extensions, like X11. For putting stuff on a screen.

Difference is that X11 has functions for drawing lines and circles and shit and everything kinda went around that, which is useful with 2D accelerated hardware (if you enable it in the driver) but everything really recent (2016?) isn’t so it’s pointless there. It’s also decades old. And window manager (and often compositor, thing doing transparency effects and stuff) is separate.

The very base of Wayland is basically a program asking for a new window and then it just has to draw stuff there itself, while extensions handle stuff like negotiating clipboard. (spoiler: if you don’t have a clipboard manager there is no “clipboard”, pasting something asks the program you copied from so if you closed that you don’t have it). It also has HDR. Shitty but HDR. Unfortunately the progress on that is slow, because it’s the @redhat.com email people dictating all the specs and making countless meetings about them of course, and everyone else just sits and listens to their bullshit. Oh, and server/compositor/wm is all one single program (although a project called “wlroots” provides most of the “server” part as a piece of code devs can copy paste). Anyways, KDE Plasma/kwin is the most feature complete server out there, although I personally “outgrowed” from it if that makes sense

Hyprland

Some kid made a Wayland server. Pretty ok quality (!!! relatively). Originally wlroots but later it’s own thing (“hyproot”). It’s meant for “eyecandy” shit setups, not a fan of that, ew gross, although to each their own kinks. BUT to get the stereotypical “”“eyecandy”“” one has to either (1) spend their entire free time on fucking with configuration files and installing everything or (2) get someone else’s giant ass script which compiles stuff from 16 guthib repos and then freshly extracts you a 2 gig .config directory. Lots of the time people end up turning their bar/desktop/whatever into a fucking web browser, like it’s MicroWin from SoftDows. Knowingly or from a dependency for some stupid AUR package that doesn’t read like it would do that by name, like “hyprpanel-git”. I am not going to link an example of the dependency, it’s aylur<dot>github<dot>io<slash>ags if you really want to look at that. I hope moss grows on walls of everyone who did that knowingly and actually liked it.

As for me personally, I used it for a while for it’s HDR support but just never installed a bar or anything. Turned off the shaders, the wallpaper, the splash, the rounding stuff, the borders, and… “Hey, get me a Hyprland with NOTHING”. So yeah. Later there was some really fucking annoying shrodenbug, I rage quit and switched to sway-git. It also has HDR nowadays, tho you gotta bind keys for turning it on/off because screensharing sucks. Just like at “home”, on WinSoft from MicroDows.

The Android build system. Booo, scary.

I only wanted a LineageOS boot image built. The recommended specs list 64GiB RAM. Figured wouldn’t apply to me until I tried to build a target literally called “nothing”. It just used up all of the RAM and OOMed about 2 minutes in, building the “build cache” or whatever the fuck it needs to do to “warm up”.

After a few fucktons of swapspace, turning off some of my daemons, some sysctl fuckery (there were options for limiting process virtual memory size IIRC? I put it all the way up) and taskset -p 0-15:1 (use logical CPUs 0, 2, 4…), I had my laptop allocating 50 something GiB. I have 16GB (decimal) physical RAM installed and I consider that already way too much for my usual needs.

After about half an hour of the build system build systeming, it just stopped doing that then built the kernel in 4 minutes with everything else in some time too.

Yes, I have tried just running make directly. That just resulted in an image that did nothing but toggle on and off an empty (no percentage) charging circle via power button.

Idk, my first time a while back (after Mint and git clone, ./configure copypasting), as soon as I stopped trying to debug the python script and started following the damn wiki, it took me like 2 hours or so to choose F2FS out of all options then chain that with LUKS with all of the relevant options to allow discards. Not counting the time it took to reboot from a “you are a dumbass lol - systemd” screen back to the installer. I completely ignored LVM and all of those other funny initialisms because it said it was optional and I didn’t see the point. I still don’t. Then I looked up how to get 3000000FPS in minenhandwerk and found alhp.go, that was mostly just copy pasting.

Though now it’s sort of vendor locked in to AMD and Intel (plus whatever those few Chinese clones were) and a very specific combination of software components on Linux (or just Windows), with janky emulation and translation for everything else, but that’s a separate issue.

Netsurf hasn’t seen any love lately. It’s still being developed on git but no releases. Same with Dillo.

Dillo rejects scripting. Makes perfect sense to me. It also rejects automatic redirects, which also makes sense but the web has already been established around that as given so it can’t pass the most passive anti-bot.

The state of scripting support on Netsurf is uhm, quite interesting. Scripts can write to the page parse time (like a snowflake generator) but can’t do ANYTHING after the page loaded, EXCEPT text fields and text areas. And scripts can always read but not write checkbox state. There aren’t any button events, either, but if you check the state of a text field repeatedly you can do interactivity. What is also interesting is that the new way of finding elements (getElementById) is functional, but the old way (document.formName.elementName) ISN’T. So that means that basically nothing existing functions (apart from again, the snowflake generators from geocities). But you can do the old style text animations if you specifically program it to use the new method despite being old style shit. Netsurf also passes “GoAway” and the most basic setting of Anubis (the passive redirects).

Both are good enough to browse “old Lemmy”, although I haven’t tried to login since my instance doesn’t have it and the owner ghosted me (hi @milan@discuss.tchncs.de).

There’s also a half public domain half permissive (BSD) text mode browser, chawan.net . Extraordinarily good concept! However, it avoids some of the bloat by forcing bloat onto your terminal emulator and having it render images, and my terminal emulator does not bother itself with such tasks and emulates a terminal, so image heavy sites like Lemmy fucking suck on it. No, it cannot just weight different characters from some public domain font (spoiler: if converted, all of them by international conventions are public domain) by brightness and by individual pixel similarity to an actual image and then just display those. That would make too much sense. I have high hopes for it, though. Also, I find the keybinds really weird.

I have not tested Chawan’s scripting support much at all, all I can say is that it’s certainly better than Netsurf. And that everything I’ve written in the worst fucking programming language ever for Netsurf (not released yet, very soon I hope) runs on Chawan. However, they are unusable since textboxes open your preferred editor. Makes perfect sense, a browser shouldn’t be a text editor. But like, that breaks my gimmick that makes it work with Netsurf, damn. Checkboxes can be written to, for once, tho no access key support. The JS is still not enough to login to Lemmy (the default bloated frontend).
