The sixth beta for Haiku R1 comes just about a week after Haiku’s 25th anniversary. We’ve come a long way since the project began a quarter-century ago in 2001. Thank you to everyone who’s supported us thus far, and here’s to another 25 years of Haiku!

This release contains almost two years of the development team’s hard work to improve Haiku’s features and overall stability, and to make more software available for use. Over 530 bugs and enhancement tickets have been resolved for this release.

Compared to earth, governments and countries that signed Outer space treaties and there is a lot of administrative hurdles you need to overcome to launch even 1U cubesat (and it takes years) and you need to comply with your launch provider and you need to comply with eco and ethics requirements, and you need to comply with telecomunnication requirements, and you need to have a license to operate. There is a million requirements from a hundred differe nt bodies both domestic and international.

There are a lot of them but most suffer from chinese hardware support problem (e.g. they are unsopported beyond what did they ship with softwarewise, provide close to zero documentation, and have dozens models sold at any one time), rpi themselves aren’t all that libre and always shipped with blobs and had bullshit excuses about it. Anyway rp2350 is the best thing that raspberry produces right now.

You can pretty safely assume that both things are true, they are lying about details, and that houties probably at least made an attempt. First so they can jerk themselves off about how powerful and useful their thingy is, and at the same time how only they can be allowed to make them because they are good and responsible. And terrorists would use commonly available tools.

Installing arch won’t give you anymore understanding of how system works, at least no more than installer would, linux systems are somewhat hard to understand especially if you aren’t deeply involved with them. Also that understanding requires so much peripheral knowledge of linux to start with, it’s not even funny. Like you can start on disk partitioning and it would take a week to explain everything you can do, look at this pie: encryption, vdo, lvm, different filesystems, billion things available in device mapper, then systemd mounts etc., etc..

It’s shades of gray honestly. Sometimes they are very good (especially if you need some small tool that scratches a particular itch or want something that is 50% there right now), other times they’re extremely dumb and write horrible code. Especially of you want them to use some modern feature of your language that they don’t know anything about, or when the language in question isn’t very popular, or when the library you are using at the same time isn’t very popular, changed a lot recently and is big. They can go in circles for hours with ‘wait actually …, actually …, but wait …, but actually …, ad nauseam. But when you limit them in scope, give realistic goals and constraints they more often than not work good.

Probably as good as it can, you shouldn’t use docker compose with podman anyway, there are two alternatives (quadlets - they describe everything as a systemd units and kube yaml - they use standard k8s yaml files including pods, deployments, secrets, etc.), both arguably better than compose.

Rootless, better integrated with system, a bit faster and lighter on resources. Also it supports k8s style yaml configuration both ways and a lot of people are more familiar with them and they also provide some (minimal) interoperability.

Well, you actually need exits unless your plan always was ‘die in a bunker without exits’.

hover drones aren’t all that cheap and require either very good crpa gnss antenna, or some kind of visual inertial odometry. Or you’ll get althold at best, which isn’t really hovering more like flying with the wind. Flying drones are effective because they are cheap, hovering drones (the multi-use ones) are prone to dying to kamikadze drones, they are big, loud, hot, and not very good at transporting things compared to rovers (logistics as you mentioned), one successfull delivery by rover compares to 10-20 deliveries by flying drone.

Still not clear to me how exactly flying drone superiority when traversing hard terrain = bipedal robots are a good idea.

You don’t really ’need’ to open the door, it’s enough to destroy all exits. Question is how cheap you can make biped drone and how cheap you can make a small rover capableof moving 10-15 kilos of explosives. Rover can be made as cheap as <$500 or so.

Artillery includes rocket artillery, but even ‘regular’ gun artillery can shoot for tens of kilometers with specialised shells, while being mobile at that.

I’ve been of the opinion that arty is basically guns but big nothing special about it, but whitnessing modern artillery piece work changed it considerably, while yes they are just big guns, but they are big guns. Like you feel it in your bones when it shoots.

Objects are carried by UGVs, they can carry 200-300 kilograms while being pretty small, small UGVs can carry up to 100 kilos with size of ~1m in every dimension. Unless you can explain to a very expensive and smart robot what you need to rotate and where and how to operate tools given, you’ll need a very competent pilot for these robots which with high probability would still be worse than dumbest of humans because they lack agility and require a lot of supportive infra to operate. Rich nations probably would try to make humanoid robots (like they did with robodogs) with questionable success.

IIRC the whole premise of Infinite Stratos was dumb, like there are super weapons and they are controlled completely by a single peson that just decided that women won’t start wars. Then the said person apparently reverses that decision because reasons. So it’s a bad harem with bad plot.

Both kwin built-in tiling and most tiling wms include ability to make a window floating while other windows are tiled. Difference is in how window manager behaves by default, most popular environments float by default with ability to tile when needed. Tiling wms tile by default with ability to float when needed.

As I’ve said in previous post you can try kwin tiling without any long configurations, there is a default layout so you can just drag a window with shift pressed and there would be highlighted area where it would tile.

I’m not sure what fancy zones is, some kind of manual tiling as far as 10 seconds of search shown? That is available in kde by default, you can change layout by pressing win+t, then when pressing shift and dragging a window it will highlite nearest tile and tile automatically.
