I find it can speed me up, but it’s very easy to become lazy and find myself asking the AI to do things I could do perfectly well myself, quickly and using far less electricity. And then before I know it I have a huge pile of slop that I don’t know my way around, and I spend the time on the other end trying to understand and check it all. It feels amazing up front, but you pay later.

Their excuse definitely smells like bullshit. It just seems they want to do the Apple thing of making sure they get the money for the upgrade, plus a premium. Except even Apple has a technical reason they don’t allow upgrades, which Raspberry Pi doesn’t.

I have pretty strict DNS filtering across the home network, so I assumed it was that. But it still loads for me in Brave on Linux. It didn’t load in Vanadium on GrapheneOS.

I’m no expert, but some examples I know of are:
Tribler: a bittorrent-based app with built-in search and some extra security compared to regular bittorrent.
Nicotine+ and similar apps: clients for the Soulseek network, where you download an entire file from a single peer. Also searchable.
There’s no need to use a website for either of these.

You’d have to test whether the TV’s firmware allows it to run without the microphone or WiFi. Some manufacturers will anticipate people trying to control their own tech and shut their device down at any sign of tampering.

There just aren’t any good deals any more. Prices for everything have gone crazy in the last few months. For coding LLMs the cloud services may now be the least worst value, by design, until they hike the prices.
That said, I still just paid way too much for a used graphics card so I could do many things locally, because I just don’t want to give the likes of Sam Altman a single penny.

Zero-knowledge proofs exist, where a person can prove one fact without revealing other facts about themselves. If there were a will to do it, governments could figure out a way for people to prove their age to a website without revealing their identity. The problem is that it was never supposed to be about proving your age, because what governments and corporations actually want is your identity for surveillance purposes. Proof of age and protection of children was just the cover story they used to promote the destruction of online anonymity. The goal is surveillance and control, not protection of children.

It’s no coincidence that capitalism comes along with an emphasis on individualism and “expressing yourself” through consumption. It’s designed to train people out of collective thinking (class consciousness) and collective action, and it has been very effective.

If a piece of the model’s answer is genuinely useful, quote it and say why. “I checked with Claude and this part lines up:” works great.
It still drives me nuts when my boss does that. Especially since the next thing he sends is a bunch of AI-generated code he just wants us to copy and paste into our application. He treats anything the magic AI says as authoritative, and it overrides anything an actual person can say to him.

Khosla had seen Microsoft’s announcement last year that it was winding down its free nonprofit licenses beginning July 2025, but, per the record, he should have still been in the clear. He renewed Canopy’s yearly license last October, and Microsoft had emailed him to confirm he would retain access until Oct. 4, 2026. Khosla had no reason to expect anything would change, and he received no additional warnings—even as Microsoft kept in regular touch about other software updates. And he later learned he wasn’t alone, when another company service representative called the very next day and told him that roughly 171,000 small nongovernmental organizations “lost everything” in their OneDrive accounts.
In a statement emailed to Slate, Microsoft wrote that the original offers were “retired to streamline our grant offerings and simplify our grant portfolio,” adding, “We strongly advised our nonprofit customers and partners to transition to a different Microsoft 365 offer for nonprofits before their renewal date to avoid disruption and data loss.”
As an IT person I can’t imagine just deleting customers’ data one day without keeping an archival copy. This feels like a mistake, in which case they’re being dishonest in order not to admit to their mistake. And if it wasn’t a mistake, it’s a sign that they aren’t competent at understanding their customers, making plans, or communicating. Either way, it shows Microsoft is not a company you can have confidence doing business with.

Without evidence, the idea that there’s a hidden camera in the exam room is just paranoid speculation. By contrast, this was an actual visible camera in the exam room, and a camera that was obviously the doctor’s own personal device. It makes sense to worry more about the camera you know is real.

I have been enjoying Qobuz, since quitting Spotify a couple of years ago. Everything’s better quality, they have proper credits and PDF CD booklets, the classical music metadata is much better, it encourages you to listen more deliberately to music you choose, and I don’t feel dirty for funding scumbags.
I don’t think today’s bots take any notice of robots.txt. It’s a relic from a more civilized time.
