• I remember playing back in 0X and even then the quests were silly. I liked running around looking at the geometry and hitting things there, but the quests took the fun out of it once I realised they were by far the more efficient way to level up (so you could go to new geometry to hit new things).

• Yeah once the mainstream is fully saturated they’ll turn their gaze to smaller, more “authentic” places. Imagine if they could have a boot infiltrate a tiny little private chat between a dozen people by building up the appearance of an organic presence on the fediverse / indie web.

  Now advertisers (and potentially, malicious state actors) have a little spy and influencer in your group.

• Actually surprised how candid some of these statements are. Maybe points to more internal resistance than I would have assumed… like, they see the problem.

  Their focus on threats to media companies is probably borne out of fear of litigation, so maybe they only pay a lil lip service to how they also hurt “content creators” (people).

  Could also be that they know that when talking to the representatives of runaway financial automatons like multinational corporations, they have to appeal in terms the machine will understand.

• Yeah and I feel like if we actually respected the nature and our fellow humans, made sure everything was mined as ethically as possible, everyone paid along the way got a living wage with self-determination, made to last, actual plans for disposal — all that. Then we’d actually cherish these devices like the amazing things that they are.

  Sure we’d probably just be getting to the point of streaming video now, but I honestly don’t think we’d feel like we missed out.

• Yeah throwing out an entire computer because one little component is burnt out, or throwing out a whole component because one little connection is burnt out. And then there’s even micro soldering if you want to get surgical…

  Or simply throwing a computer away because it’s slower than the new one. The price paid by the environment, by future generations, for e-waste needs to be front-loaded into the manufacturing process.

  Otherwise companies are just stealing from the future and turning collective horizon into an unlivable garbage dump.

• I have access to essentially unlimited local compute at my work. Some of my coworkers use it to run LLMs, some use the pre-enshittified corporate models, and I gave all that a shot—like really went for it, but ultimately would rather just work at my own pace.

  In my workplace the people who use them come off as kind of frantic to my eye. Like they’re always making these overly engineered greenfield things no one asked for, which gets them a shout out at quarterly and then no one ever thinks of it again…

  I’m not saying there’s 0 legitimate use for the technology if you could divorce it from its problematic origins, but I’m not that smart, and people are increasingly coming to me for help when previously they seemed happy to just talk to their little corporate minder.

  I feel like chatbot and text generating models generally encourage dark patterns we don’t even have names for yet and I’m just highly wary of the whole thing.

• After the great procgen bubble of the 10s I kind of was meh on it being shoved in everything to try to pad play time or replay value. I became much more into finite authored content with like a real story, characters, and most importantly a real ending.

  That said, procgen seems like a, uh idk, a cool clockwork contraption that an author actually fussed over and tuned to their vision.

  Compared to the gen slop that tells me literally nothing of the person who made it. And can’t tell any of their decisions, brushstrokes, or challenges, from what some model that has nothing to do with them “decided” to spew forth.

  At best it’s a form of curation that disrespects every artist who influenced what just generated.

• Like every time workers seem to be getting woke enough to maybe possibly do something on a scale that touches rich people’s yacht money some of us get some minor concessions that keep us working in the system and reproducing it for the next generation of workers.

  Although the dream with ai is an economy without the need for workers (we wouldn’t be a part of it), or labour power pushed to such an insignificant little atomised role that withholding it is no longer a threat.
