Post and user deleted after finding out Ai was used

I won’t mention which game and creator this is (a game on itchio), as I don’t want witch hunt here. It’s an indie dev after all. If you saw the post "I watched an artist evolve from producing rough art to delivering elite, top-tier artwork” with NSFW content (the one with oversized boobies), then you know what I mean.

What makes me sad and angry is, that I pointed out it looks like Ai was involved in the art creation. The author of the post replied that only background and 10% of the art was created with Ai, and that the game is 50 hours long. Feels very much like it was the developer himself? After I replied with this is problematic, because this was explained only after I mentioned it. There was no Ai mentioned in the itchio page or the post.

What followed was, the post got deleted. I reached out to the Lemmy user and asked in a private message why it was deleted. Shortly after then the Lemmy account are got deleted too.

What to make out of this? I was not toxic in anyway and didn’t saw any toxic comments from others. I didn’t want an indie developer to disappear, if the work is honest and the game is fun. Just don’t hide things. How should a situation like these be handled in the future?

Original project its based on is larfingshnew/3d-controller-overlay, which didn’t have an update in 2 years and does not support Steam Deck or the new Steam Controller 2026. Recently a fork appeared Khyretos/3dco-plus that does what I want it to, supports the new controller (and other controllers and has different layouts for displaying the mappings) and has a ready to go AppImage for Linux. It also supports Gyro and Touch, and even Keyboard and Mouse.

But this fork is heavily Ai assisted (the original was not). The developer assures us this is not vibe coded, but carefully examined and understood before doing changes. Now I’m in a position where I initially didn’t want projects heavily developed with Ai, but this tool does exactly what I want it to and there is no alternative. I want to share it here anyway, so you can decide for yourself.

• Yes, if the Autocomplete uses Ai features then it is Ai assisted. But what about searching for bugs? Nothing is Ai created in this case, but it is Ai assisted. Even if you did not incorporate any generated code from the Ai model.

  And what about projects who do not disclose it? We have to deceiver and guess if its just Ai assisted or has some parts that are Vibe coded. This is what I mean it gets time consuming, and adds friction. How do we even know if this was not just copy pasted from the web (which seems to be okay for smaller stuff), and how do the person know if the copy pasted code was created by an Ai assist? They might not even know if they are honest.

• The problem is, at what point becomes it just Ai assisted. And who decides and how to proof this. These uncertainties are part of the problem for rules like these. Not only is it difficult to decide and time consuming, it also creates friction in the community. Note, I am not against having this rule. It’s just, it is such a depressing situation.

  1. Steam itself does not decides the prices.
  2. Regional prices is meant to be uneven, as countries have different living standards and the conversion rate is not always the same.

  Question:

  • European prices include taxes already. Does the US price shown with or without taxes before checkout? I don’t know that actually. This could be another factor in different price shown.

• Is the goal to match ONLY the given haystack? What would be the use case? Because usually for dynamic usage you need the opposite site, find matches not the pattern. This is basically a pattern finder. Don’t get me wrong, from technical level this is impressive and interesting. But I don’t see a use case right now.

  Well I could imagine a scenario to create test cases for your software that uses regex. But the resulting pattern is unreadable and probably not very efficient too. I don’t have a better solution to this, so don’t take my reply as a poison; I just analyze with interest.

• That’s why a game should have Community servers, at least that could help a bit if the company fails to do it. TF2 has community servers and was the savior of the game for many (I didn’t got into that). I didn’t play Red Dead, so cannot speak from personal experience here.

  There was a time when TF2 was completely abandoned by Valve, and especially as some source code of the game leaked, the cheaters exploded on official servers. It’s similar to what you describe with RDO. Even blatant spinbots with 100% accuracy of sniper from across one map side to the other… imagine your entire enemy team re snipers sitting at one corner of the map and constantly jump and spin until something hits their way on the other side of the map and gives you 100% headshot instant death. Kick one out, another of them fill the match automatically. Nowadays its better controlled and not that of an issue anymore, when I believe other players.

• It’s just a roleplay. The person playing the game doesn’t do racist stuff, its about the look only. I would understand somewhat if the character was a real life person who did bad shit. But c’mon man, let people have some fun.

• it’s yet another hero in an ocean of hero shooters, with pretty much no unique points.

  That’s not really a reason to fail. Other genres have similar games in a crowded competition and still sell well, even if they are not very special different. And I even argue that there are not many hero shooters in the style and gameplay of Ovewatch. So I / we are in dire need of more alternatives. Compare this to other genres, where vast amount of different games are available. There are many reasons why Concord failed, one of them being ugly characters in example. Also it depends who makes those games. Nobody asked Sony to do this, as every Sony fan was expecting single player games. Having “too many” hero shooters in the type of Overwatch is not the reason the game failed (there aren’t many).

• That’s not necessarily saying the accusations of AI were false, either.

  This is not even a question anymore, because the person admit it was using Ai. The problem is, it wasn’t disclosed until getting caught. Also immediately told me game was 50 hours long and only 10% of the art is Ai created, mostly backgrounds.

  For the context, the post in question did not have any link. Links to games look always suspicious. I wonder why there was no link, if the sole purpose was a honest recommendation. My explanation for this is, it wasn’t honest (as you describe it), so their posts do not get flagged for spamming. Post explained in the middle somewhere the name of the game and on what platform to find.

  On a different platform, Imgur, I have seen a different approach. They collect popular (old and new) memes and put them in a collection out. These are almost guaranteed to get upvotes and make it to the frontpage. Then with the popularity they edit link to the game page (or other links where they sell something). It’s frustrating.

  According to the SEO audits of my personal blog, the majority of my backlinks are from Lemmy instances.

  There is probably a bias here, because you are a Lemmy user too. So people might have a personal interest into checking your blog.

  As to deal with self-promotion, maybe have them a weekly thread dedicated to it? Because I’m getting nervous about the many advertisement posts made. But on the other hand, I personally like games too and want to recommend others. Which could be seen or misunderstood as advertisement, which in turn applies to other users too off course.

• Thanks, I had a bit remorse, as this outcome was not my intention. I wouldn’t have had a problem, if the Ai disclosure was done beforehand. I don’t like this hiding until caught. I also get it, its hard as an indie developer, but being honest upfront is the first step of trust.

• I wouldn’t mind additional launchers and accounts, if it was optional without hiding core game elements behind it. A game must launch and the base game be playable on Steam without additional online DRM, software launchers and account requirement. For single player games that are fine to play offline.

• I thought that was exactly how copyright works. It is infeasible to keep track of every infringement, so a policy like that is unenforceable.

  That’s why DMCA takedowns exist, even automated after an Ai recognizes a song in example. As this has some bad side effects in an automated process or even persons and companies misusing it either willingly or by not understanding, it will remain a problem. DMCA exists because it is unfeasable to keep track of every infringement, and an instant action is taken just in case it is true.

• Maybe they are working on it. First a cease and desist letter. If they do not comply or respond, then collecting evidence, preparing an attack. This is not a small company they would sue against, and Nintendo does not want to lose it. It takes time.

• It is. According to Nvidia, DLSS is a family and brand now, consisting of different technologies. So the name DLSS started as upscaler only, but now it contains the image styling and other techs in the same name. Which is great, because it confuses everyone.
