Private DNS (with ad blocking)

I responded to someone in comments on a post that may not get as much visibility, and wanted to share something that might help some others who are new or unfamiliar.

I referenced Quad9 DNS as probably one of the best private DNS you can use, Swiss based, no log, no tracking, no data to sell, etc. They also implement DNSSEC, DoH, DoT, QUIC, ECS (which you may or may bot want), malware blocking, content filtering, and maybe something else I’m forgetting.

Many DNS sinkhole apps, OSes, or systems can actually utilize Quad9 for your resolver while those systems also block ads. Below is my functional list of systems that I’m aware of, though I haven’t tested everything. I believe all are considered FOSS, too. If you don’t have a spare Raspberry Pi laying around, try running in HomeAssistant, Yunohost, ZimaOS (previously CasaOS), or others.

Feel free to comment and add your own I’m maybe not aware of. I’m no software engineer, but I can read through some code, though not an expert, nor have combed through these personally. Usually I’ve tested/run at the recommendation of others over the years before my ban on Reddit (for shitting on AI).

Seems this is for One+ and Oppo, but with alt Android OSes like Lineage, would be nice to have it back and available. I’m too dumb to code and prefer not to vibe code it. Unfortunately, I installed lineage almost immediately when I got this phone, and am missing a lot of features I didn’t look into until now.

Edit: since this was for Oppo, One+ received capability with an update, making me think this special protocol would work for anyone’s device. No special hw required. Maybe there’s a way to dump the app/feature files from a ROM to build into an app?

Oh I agree ads are a big no-no!

My mobile setup is Proton VPN, “Secure core” (seems like VPN server relay), custom DNS to Quad9, split tunnel only to my XMPP server for improved performance.

Firefox alt browser with PrivacyBadger (from EFF) and a couple other extensions and blockers. Invidious for any YT videos, Materialious for the YT Invidious app.

Correct, no ad blocking, but it’s fully private, no DNS leaks, you can use the malware filtering option too.

Quad9 is a nonprofit based out of Switzerland, they’re DNS-focused, not so focused, that’s why they don’t do ad-blocking. I watched another commenters link to the CTO talking about what the focus is, how they work, etc. He jokes they don’t know their customers, because they hold no data at all.

Adguard is a for-profit company that sells services, they’re based out of Cyprus, and have varying privacy policies depending on what service out website you’re using. Aka, it sounds like they’re monetizing your data in some way, shape, or form. “We store your Personal Data in our own data center located in Frankfurt, Germany. Your Personal Data may be processed by our employees, who can only access your data through their job duties on a need-to-know basis. If you have questions or would like to know from which countries your Personal Data may be accessed, you can write to us at privacy@adguard.com.” If you’re OK with that, that’s fine, to each their own. They don’t sound like a bad company either, don’t get me wrong. Everyone will have different needs and wants, and views risks or threats differently.

That is why I not only use 2 IPv4 but 2 IPv6 addresses, and 2 piholes. Quad9 has 99.994% uptime. They show the last outage for 4 minutes back on June 29th.

Touche. Though, I’ll admit I use VNC to access my pi, not SSH. I’m not a terminal fan if I can help it. I mean, I guess I still use terminal once in, so, maybe I should use ssh. Hmm. I never gave it too much thought.

Nothing really exists.

The likely extreme thing I did was setup ManageEngine’s MDM+ (free for<25 users) and put my sons phone on a “device profile” which locks it down. It’s decently intuitive, but does require a “server” so there’s a bit of setup too. I use YT at work too so for me it was done in 30 minutes.

I do use DNSSEC for my website and my XMPP server. I do not use ECS as Quad9 references possible IP addresses leaking quad9.net/support/faq/#edns.

For my home network, my piholes point to:

IPv4
- 9.9.9.9
- 149.112.112.112
IPv6
- 2620:fe::fe
- 2620:fe::9
I do also use dns.quad9.net/dns-query for my phone when on data or non-Home WiFi. I typically use a VPN, but for logging into my bank website I need to disable the VPN. I have LineageOS with no 3rd party Google Play apps, they’re all FOSS through F-Droid.

Slightly unrelated, FUCK PayPal, bc I tried to change my phone number a few months back and they said they can’t use VoIP numbers bc of spam. I logged on recently to close my account and what do I see?? You can update you’re phone number OR use a WhatsApp account number??? Fuck that bullshit! Why do they get special treatment? I almost thought about making a special account, but I hate Meta more than PP, so no dice. I’ll just close my account.

OK gotcha. I thought regulations were pretty standard across Europe and North America. I didn’t realize LoRa itself could get beyond 10km but that’s maybe bc I’ve been looking at consumer grade stuff.

I loved my Lenovo Explorer WMR headset. When everyone else struggled to get much beyond 1080, this was 2880x1440 in 90hz. It also had the dots for tracking on the controllers, with 2 cameras mounted so you didn’t need room sensors. Beyond its time.

My 2x GTX670 SC 4GB in SLI ate every VR experience I threw a it!! I miss Pavlov VR, Assetto Corsa 2, and the freebie Steam game with mini stick figure people where you’re an archer shooting other stick people protecting your castle!! 🥹

Usually I find the best companies are often the longstanding ones you’ve not heard of. Like Sennheiser, it was one I discovered years ago purely by accident when using Pro equipment and fell in love. Far better than anything “Bose” or “Beats”.

Beats is owned by Apple now iirc, and all that is, is a licensing ploy for more money. There’s nothing fancy about “Beats” anymore and hasn’t been for a long time! Like when HP had beats branded speakers, they just had to use better quality audio and a certain software, and they licensed the name. Beats didn’t make anything.

Same goes for car audio. 99%of the time, Bose, Infinity, Rockford Fosgate, Harman Kardon, Alpine, Pioneer, Sony (🤮), etc. They’re licensing the name only, not truly being made by said audio companies. At most, there’s a certain standard of sound quality that needs to be met, but that’s it.

I’ve got one right outside the road entrance to our Target which is also the entrance for a shopping strip mall and restaurants. I don’t frequent Target ever, but some of the other stores I did. I avoid that whole area now bc is sort of hidden in the main road. They don’t need ALL the other traffic data, so why pace it right there??! Suspicious AF! I don’t shop at Lowe’s either bc ours has like 3 or 4 around that lot and strip of stores. Fuck em!

OK, I’m not saying they’re (police) are doing anything right or wrong. The initial comment I replied to was about not understanding why a ticket was still issued after proof given. I explained my experiences from what I’ve witnessed, but also not claiming (or trying to) this is what happened in this exact situation.

The last sentence I requoted of mine was a simple speculation or presumption out of the officer’s own laziness to not verify.

The other issue, cops (IMO) don’t care if they’re wrong or right in these scenarios, bc the person they ticketed goes to court and provides copies of insurance and doesn’t have to pay anything in the end; (“no harm no foul”). The biggest inconvenience is taking time off work to go to court in the first place. If the cop was right, well, be more added to their quota of tickets I guess. Plus it looks like they’re actually doing something productive.

Calm the fuck down though bro, you’re getting super bent out of shape reading WAY too far into something that you’re wanting to be there about someone defending a cop or something and trying to call me out. OK cool? Get worked up over a comment online. I got better shit to do. You’re just trying to comment for the sake of winning a pretend argument or upvotes… Go get 'em tiger

Having worked in insurance before, I’ve had numerous officers stop in to our office to validate insurance cards because they’ve been doctored.

How that works: person A signs up for a policy, pays the minimum pymt. Gets ID cards, stops paying after first payment. Policy is canceled but ID cards show valid date for 6-12 months. Person A then edits the document with new dates to show future proof of insurance without spending money. Might trick some initially unless you get into an accident.

However, not everyone is so skillful at matching fonts or size, so often it’ll look like shit and be obvious its fake. Maybe the officer thought some database was surely more accurate, but should’ve done a little research first before issuing a ticket.

Just keep your TV off the network. Roku TVs have a locked bootloader, probably similar with FireTVs. Best bet is Android or google TV could likely be modded.

Waterfox browser, Privacy Badger, Port Authority. Usually private tabs, always-on VPN with Quad9 DNS.

It rarely breaks sites, but occasionally captcha doesn’t work. That’s a privacy Badger thing that you can disable temporarily or for the site entirely.

Then I test with coveryourtracks.eff.org and might tweak additional WF settings.

I also use Lineage OS, F-Droid only, no Google anything or any big tech. The “biggest” tech company might be Proton. But I like their mail service with custom domain support and SimpleLogin aliases.

On older hardware I would agree it can be cumbersome. At work, I’ve swapped everything to Ubiquiti and it’s a couple clicks and I’m there. I liked it so much I did it at home with some caveats. Local account only and blocking anything phoning home.

I’ve got Chinese cameras too, they’re on their own VLAN,ext traffic is blocked simply.

I’m going to go out in a limb and die on it, that: why overcomplicate things with Docker containers?? I didn’t read through your post; The title, to me, doesn’t require it based on what you’re doing. I then read you’re Problem box and confirmed you don’t need NVR on Docker. Seems overkill or really, pointless.

A. Do you absolutely NEED the VLAN for your NVR? Why not just isolate the devices on the network with a bogus DNS record or FW rule blocking via MAC or IP? B. Why run NVR through Docker? I hate devs who only containerize and don’t allow for options. Deal killer, personally. But it it has a native option, why not run that? It’s just extra steps for traffic to pass through which feels like a complicated bottleneck.

Idk, you do you. I’m SURE I’ll get hate for this comment, but sometimes you need to take a steep back and think about what’s necessary vs what’s for fun for learning. I’d you can, hey great! If you can’t, or it breaks, how much time do you now want to spend learning how to troubleshoot?

Automotive companies love all that data, and collect it, monetize it to data brokers, insurance “risk data brokers” etc. KIA/Hyundai and Nissan are there worst for it!
