We all read about the attempts to charge a US Citizen for destruction of evidence for using the distress pin on his GOS phone. So what is safe to do if you know you will be traveling internationally? Are people getting a burner phone and leaving their normal phone at home? What’s to stop you from saying you dont have a phone if you are stopped at a border crossing?
I like this point, and kinda want to dig in. What are the risks for journalists? I assume contact information and notes they’ve taken about potential stories. Chats. Passwords to those applications. Is it the same for the activist person?
What are other common risk profiles people might need to think about?
I care about it in principle, but also they’re making up the rules as they go.

I mean, agreed for anyone who has that option. Dont travel there. But in this case if its your starting and ending point that doesn’t address the question at hand. How to do this as safely as possible.
Is there a way to back up to something like a thumb drive? I haven’t thought about it but I guess we all probably carry a lot of data on our phones we dont strictly NEED day to day that you could back up and leave at home.

And prior to this, no hint at the potential consequences. Also, you just want to go home at this point. Its been a little while since I read about it, but I think they said you can give us the pin or we will crack it with XYZ software (idk what its named). So there’s a risk at that point if you think it might work. Idk, I’m not going to judge the dude.
Also they were saying that normal rules didn’t apply at a border. No request for lawyer, no need for warrant.

I think you’re right, it is important for people to know their rights, but also understand that these people are making it up as they go.
In the activist example, they claimed they had evidence he had child pornography. Do they even have to find anything real to fuck up your day if they want to?
