That seems to be the standard for everything else. Anything generated by AI should have a disclaimer.
No, that is not my argument, which you would’ve seen if you’d read to the end.
Maybe Google is insane. The last time I tested it, I got a different answer the second time.
Technically not a monopoly, because that would mean only one company has control, and that’s illegal. It would be a small number of companies, though.
Got it. So plants are intelligent.
Or if the military put an LLM in charge of nuclear weapons. But surely nobody would be stupid enough to do that!
Yes, but when the shit hits the fan and they blame the AI, we shouldn’t let them get away with it. It’s their fault, not the computer’s.
LLMs basically work like auto-correct. They’re much more sophisticated, but it’s the same basic principle. Instead of “Which letter is most likely to follow after this series of letters?” it’s “Which token is most likely to follow after this series of tokens?” A token can be anything, but usually it’s a word.
Now, given that, consider a statement like
We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans!
Okay, how? A statistical model generating tokens doesn’t have thought, it doesn’t have emotions, so it can’t want to do something, much less make plans and carry them out.
Could AI give somebody the ability to kill all humans? How? Under what scenario? Is somebody putting an LLM in charge of their nuclear stockpile? You don’t blame the LLM. You blame the humans who made that decision.
Yeah, because it’s all statistical. You can test this yourself. Go to Google and search for something. Then search for that same exact thing again. Gemini will give you a different response each time.
I’ve heard a few explanations for the “AI will kill us all” narrative.
AI techies are in a cult. They genuinely believe this stuff because they’re crazy.
It makes the AI sound powerful and impressive, which is ultimately good for the AI companies.
They’re starting to face competition from open-weight models, so they want to scare politicians into crafting regulations. They think that they will be able to influence the regulations to favor them and squeeze out their competition.
And, of course, there’s
I think it’s pretty wild that not only is there a man who saved the world, but most people don’t even know his name.
“This reminds me of a movie I once saw, so I’m going to believe it didn’t happen.” LOOOLLL
What a world you must live in.
not simping for genocidal ethnostates is a pretty low bar.
A therapist should keep that shit to themselves, regardless of what their political beliefs are. My psychiatrist is a Catholic, but if he started telling me that I should go to church I’d be looking for a new psychiatrist.
However, if you want to be happy, satisfied, and go through life being comfortable and not require therapy, then self awareness is most definitely not a good thing.
I have to disagree. Self-awareness made me feel better about myself, not worse.
You know what requires therapy? Having a gnawing sense that you’re a failure or a coward or something like that. That’s what a lack of self-awareness will get you. That is to say, you’re going to have some opinion about yourself no matter what, and without self-awareness it’s going to be a distorted one.
Should have known something was up with how defensive about Israel she was…
Holy shit, your therapist should not be debating politics with you! That’s right up there with your therapist trying to convert you to their religion or praying with you. That’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed.
Is there actual evidence that CBT actually works?
Yes! In fact, that’s its biggest selling point. It’s an evidence-based therapy.
Yeah, I was talking about the Gemini blurb at the top of Google search results.
How many of those 900 million are being forced to use it?
Understand that the “AI” framing is pure marketing. It’s meant to get you to accept using LLMs to replace humans for every cognitive task. You have to decouple LLMs as a technology from the AI tech-bro hype train.
Oof. I think you need to find a better example than nuclear power.
LLMs existed before the AI craze. Sure, they’re useful in certain specific use cases. They aren’t a good substitute for a search engine or an artist or a therapist or any of the other myriad misuses now prevalent.
LLMs can make stuff resembling art. I’m not interested in it, though, because a human didn’t make it. What makes art art, what makes it interesting, is artists.
The room is filling with sewage. I’m not sure that this is a good thing.
It sucks as a search engine. When I’m searching for something, I want factual, correct results, not a hallucinated answer which is backed up by none of its sources.
When I click through search results, I’m reading, evaluating the sources, and synthesizing the information into something which I am reasonably satisfied is true enough. I don’t feel comfortable handing that cognitive task off to a machine. The machine’s job is to help me find the sources, not tell me what the truth is.
Having a machine that tells you what is true is the most dystopian shit ever, and it would’ve sounded completely insane only 5 years ago.
I’m sure it has. The idea that it’s frequent is unhinged.
That’s actual AI (what people are now calling AGI), and LLMs aren’t capable of that. They’d have to develop a new technology.
Unfortunately, the nobility in our society are too out of touch greedy and self-centered to pull that off.
Yeah, that’s the problem with something non-deterministic. Works for some things, but a lot of things it doesn’t.
The problem is they have to over-hype it because they aren’t making their money back.
Even frontier models are not yet strong AI aka they seriously need human supervision to check what’s coming out.
What do you consider “strong AI”?
Yeah, I’m torn. I think this stuff can be entertaining as long as you don’t take it seriously and it doesn’t descend into bigotry, but it descends into bigotry really easily. Like it’s amazing how many conspiracy theories have the bad guys be Jewish or Catholic or Satanist or communist. Even something as silly as David Icke’s lizard people is just anti-Jewish conspiracy theories where he replaced “Jew” with “lizard person”.
Money is no object to AI companies. That’s what alerted the booksellers, in fact—masses of books were being purchased without regard to price or subject matter.
Yeah, model collapse is worrying, but I don’t see how they can do anything about it due to how LLMs work. There have been some articles written about this drawing an analogy to the grey goo problem in nanotechnology. The end result is that the free web becomes essentially useless and knowledge becomes balkanized and paywalled.
The answer is yes in all cases. Well, almost all. They don’t want books printed after 2022, because those might have AI-generated text in them. Anything else is fair game.
Are you skeptical that the books being destroyed are actually rare? Or are you skeptical of the existence of rare books?
“Rare” means “difficult to acquire”. Under your definition, the only books that would qualify would be ones in museums.
I’m only interested if I get AOC feet pics.
Especially since the articles make it clear that the AI companies don’t care about rarity or quality. It’s just a dragnet to get as many books as possible. Sure, a lot of the books are going to be garbage, but some of them are going to be valuable, too.
The AI must be fed, and the only criterion is the book has to be published before 2022.
I do most of my shopping through eBay, although some of the sellers use Amazon for fulfillment. They’re hard to avoid entirely.
A digitized copy which isn’t shared with anybody else? Yes, I would disagree.
These books were purchased from booksellers. Booksellers don’t typically carry books that won’t sell. That’s why it’s unlikely these are somebody’s fanfics printed on CreateSpace or something like that.
Just because it’s legal, that doesn’t make it right. Corporations do terrible things all of the time which are perfectly legal.
If I was the owner of the only copy of an important book, I would have the legal right to destroy it, but nobody could argue convincingly that I did a good thing.
They’re used as food because that’s how people have been socialized. Nobody would willingly eat a dog, but they would eat a pig. Pigs are more intelligent than dogs.
Not to defend Brave (seriously, don’t use Brave), but it has built-in ad-blocking.
It no longer works because of how it’s programmed. Ghostery must use a different method of blocking ads which works with Manifest v3.
I like what they’re trying to do, but damn, launching an entirely new browser engine in the '20s is a heavy lift.
Yeah, KDE is “bloated”, but all that means is that there’s some stuff bundled that purists aren’t interested in. It doesn’t seem to affect the speed at all.
It was stigmatized by Windows, because the Windows terminal was terminally shitty. People swear to me that their new terminal is awesome, but I have my doubts. Microsoft seems to have a problem with making stuff that doesn’t suck.
I use the terminal for terminal shit. File manager is not terminal shit (for me).
It’s the same argument for anything AI: “It’s inevitable!”
