Why Aren’t People Moving to This Town with Cheap Housing and Literally Nothing Else

McSweeney's Internet Tendency Why Aren’t People Moving to This Town with Cheap Housing and Literally Nothing Else
preview

If you’re so tired of expensive housing prices in your major city, then why don’t you stop complaining and move to this random town I found with some cheap houses for sale and exactly zero other amenities?

No place is perfect. Sure, this city is in the middle of nowhere, isn’t near major job markets, and doesn’t have maintained roads, well-funded schools, or functioning emergency services, but it does have a series of dilapidated ranch houses located between a data center and a second data center that is currently on fire.

You can’t complain about the price of housing if you refuse to move hundreds of miles away to a city I just learned about for the purposes of this bad-faith argument.

For the same amount as a down payment in New York City, you could buy an entire house in this town in upstate wherever or whatever it’s called. You could also buy absolutely nothing else in the town because any industry was decimated in a post-industrial economic order that bled regional metros dry for the benefit of a handful of global conglomerates.

Despite Steam's concerning domination over the market, one of the things that I love about it is the ability to continually comment on other people's Steam reviews.

preview

I think by default the option is disabled, but it’s just excellent that it offers such a feature at all. You can’t even do this in Google Maps, Google Play, Walmart, Amazon, or Target, or almost any other platform. But on Steam, unlike GOG, Itch, or other platforms of which I know, you can have an entire conversation with the reviewer about the validity or details concerning their review, where you can flesh out, “Hey, this person actually has no idea of what they’re talking about,” or, “Hmm, this is actually a valid point that I hadn’t considered before,” and even defend the reviewer from other critics in the comments.

I still get concerned about Steam’s incredible dominion over digital games today, but it also blows my mind why other platforms don’t try to copy even just some of its elements more.

Icelanders will vote in a referendum on Saturday whether to resume entry talks with the European Union amid growing global insecurity. Voters are not being asked to decide just yet if they want to join the 27-member bloc – only whether they want their government to negotiate possible terms.

uBlock Origin: Any useful list of "ubiquitous sites" for dynamic rules?

preview

cross-posted from: lemmy.ca/post/69994726

The “enhanced Easy mode” of uBlock Origin consists of the “Easy mode” together with blocking all 3rd-party iframes, and blocking a list of 3rd-party resources from “ubiquitous sites”.

The docs above give the example of Facebook, with these dynamic rules:

* facebook.net * block
* facebook.com * block
* fbcdn.net * block
facebook.com facebook.com * noop
facebook.com facebook.net * noop
facebook.com fbcdn.net * noop

and also mention “Twitter, Google, Disqus, etc.”.

I have two questions about this; can anyone here kindly help me?:

  1. Is there a list of URLs for other “ubiquitous sites”? Any that you suggest?

  2. Are any of these already blocked by the static rules? For example, I’d think of blocking google-analytics with

* google-analytics.com * block

but I wonder if this is redundant; I suspect such block already takes place in one of the default blocklists. Or?

Meta $18 Billion even less than a slap on the wrist & Open Letter to competitors

Screenshot of META page with An Open Letter to TikTok and YouTube to Join Us in Supporting Teens From August 26,2026 Source: https://about.fb.com/news/2026/08/open-letter-to-tiktok-and-youtube-to-join-us-in-supporting-teens/

Think the roughly $18 Billion Meta has settled for over child safety is a slap on the wrist?

Wait until you see the actual details: 😀 Paid in annual installments over a 10-year period

😜 States receive the money, not the victims

🤑 30% will only be paid if YouTube & TikTok:

"…pay an amount matching the 30% figure “…implement a one-hour Daily Limit, Night Mode, and age assurance measures”

about.fb.com/…/agreement-with-state-attorneys-gen…

Meta even wrote a wonderfully open letter to their competitors!

Sadly now everyone will have to verify themselves, too bad for Meta, now they will have to collect even more data - which we know they totally oppose and hate ;)

QubesOS workstation + homeserver, and DANE for TLS without 3rd party company

neowutran.ovh
preview

2.5 years ago, I migrated all my services hosted on a cloud provider to a homeserver.

This homeserver is also my workstation/gaming/dev/everything. I use QubesOS (an operating system based on the Xen hypervisor), and wrote some document about it: neowutran.ovh/qubes/articles/homeserver.pdf

Basically, I am hosting:

  • DNS
  • Matrix
  • Email
  • Jitsi
  • Mumble
  • Peertube
  • Screego
  • Nextcloud
  • Searxng
  • Tor
  • Wireguard VPN
  • Copy of wikipedia
  • Personal website And others.

And for TLS, to have better security, and to avoid relying on third party company/providers, I am using DANE.

en.wikipedia.org/…/DNS-based_Authentication_of_Na…

sr.ht/~yukikoo/dane_without_root/

github.com/buffrr/letsdane

The “dane_without_root” is one of my projects and I am welcoming review / feedback on it

( I also posted about it on the QubesOS forum: …qubes-os.org/…/highlighting-neowutrans-technical… )
