stefano marinelli is working on #littleFedi, a self-hosted, single-binary activitypub/fediverse peer that hosts a mastodon-like instance with, in my mind, three killer features.

one, the thing can run on your premises completely, no need for paying for a VPS, domain name, nothing, bypasses NAT/CGNAT, encrypted comms to other instances by way of lighthouses that do the initial intros.

dos, the thing runs on something as light as a Pi zero 2W, with a miniscule memory footprint and immense CPU optimizations due to running on the weakest hardware there is (also running off SD storage).

finally, a blog-like view of your long-format tweets/toots/posts, naturally with replies appearing as comments.

Problem: wanting meaningful, bite-sized bilingual exposure without overwhelming my kid.

How I do it:

1. Install the app and explore the free trial to see content and flow. The app lists multiple activities across alphabet, numbers, shapes, and songs.
2. Go to the language/settings menu and pick the two languages you want to rotate between (Zoolingo supports 16 languages).
3. Create a 5–7 minute routine: start with a short nursery rhyme in Language A, do one matching game in Language B, then a quick puzzle in Language A. Keep the sequence predictable.
4. Follow up off-screen: after the session, have a physical toy or coloring sheet ready that ties to the game to reinforce the word or number.

Result: my kid hears the same concepts in both languages without long sessions. No affiliation here, just sharing what worked for us. If you’re experimenting with bilingual exposure, starting with very short, predictable sessions helped more than longer, random screen time.

I enjoy plot twists in my stories.

Today’s game is some more Project Zomboid. I dedicated today to upgrading my forge and building weapons. I’ve been kind of collecting everything i need off and on in the background so thankfully I’m already mostly covered. I’m glad i made all those supply runs to the local houses and have been marking them of one by one as it’s built up a nice reserve of supplies to get my level up.

The first weapon i built was a small knife. Nothing crazy, but i thought our group chef could make good use of it. Or at the very least use it as a weapon.

After that i wanted to build a mace for Cable. It turned out to be way more of a setup than i expected. I had to build an advanced forge first, which while i had the supplies for i was a level short and needed to haul them all up there. After that i needed a Metalworking punch, which i also needed to track down. Finally after all that… I needed a handle which i forgot to grab. I went and stole one from another tool we weren’t using.

The result was this Mace i made for cable.

I went ahead and delivered it too Cable, along with a book on growing Hemp just for the resident pothead that i found for him. Left them both right on the bed for him to find next time he’s on.

After that i went to go check on the Chickens because I’ve been a little worried ever since we lost the chick. Thankfully they’re all fine though, and they even laid some eggs which i went ahead and harvested.

Today was mostly a nice little break from Control. I hit a road block I’ve been struggling with and so this gave me a much needed break.

What is it?

It’s a web UI to upload documents and print them. I wanted that to print from any device in my home with zero config on device (think guests, family…). It pairs very nicely with scanserv.js.

Remarks are welcome, but I do not guarantee maintenance. As we have seen the trend of AI projects not being maintained in time, I don’t expect this project to escape that fate.

On Sunday, March 22 of this year, a large swath of the population in Quebec was woken up at 4:25 a.m. as cellphones lit up and screamed. An Amber alert had been broadcast. Less than four hours later, the two missing children were thankfully found, unharmed, and the alert was cancelled.

Amber alerts cast wide nets in an effort to find abducted children and teenagers, but each time one is transmitted in Canada, we go through a predictable cycle. Many complain that these alerts cannot be turned off or muted, even in sleep mode, and that waking people up in the middle of the night to help them find a specific car that was last spotted 200 kilometres away is unnecessarily disruptive—with some even calling 911 to complain. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials remind us through the media that these alerts are only used when necessary and that they save lives.

Any subject tied to the safety of children is bound to evoke the deepest emotions. In fact, the crime that led to the creation of Amber alerts—and to their name—was monstrous enough that it’s no wonder it rallied influential people into building a system that could potentially prevent this kind of crime.

So, I’ve got a homelab thing going, with NextCloud and Immich and other things… using Docker. But the one thing I can’t seem to wrap my head around is how to get my calendar needs met behind the scenes. I’m hoping there’s some sort of calendar syncing server I can use.

The problem: I use NextCloud and another android app to use my calendar. Easy. Historically, my household has used a single Google Calendar shared amongst members.

The real problem: They won’t ditch Google. But I need a solution so that I can:

1. Sync their calendar events to my NextCloud calendar.
2. Sync my calendar events to their Google Calendar. I think that the issue here is, the share links that the calendars give, can only be used to list a new separate calendar on each of the respective platforms - not sync the events between the existing calendars…

I’m hoping that there’s maybe a syncing solution out there that can play middle man and sync the two calendars directly, rather than having separate calendars for the two environments?
