Some of you may know by now that ani.social has its own official Matrix server. But not everyone who visits this community may have realized this, since the announcement about its launch was posted only in !meta, and the server itself was initially operating only as an experiment.

However, months are passing by, and it doesn’t look like the Matrix server is going away, so I wanted to invite members of this community to join us there. So far, the server is not very populated, but we do have a handful of regulars. There are rooms for anime, manga, novels, and there’s one for everything and anything too. This isn’t an attempt to lure you away from this forum, but simply an addition to enhance the experience for those who, apart from discussing posts here, also enjoy a real-time chat from time to time. Side note: If you decide to join, it’s a good idea to use spoilers when discussing anime/manga. The worst thing in all this is that Rudeus did a lot of this to himself. Sure, man-god killed Roxy, but such a thing could have happened anyway, without anyone plotting to kill her. Accidents happen, people die all the time, especially in times like these. It was all Rudy’s fault for not being there for his family when they needed him, not trying to get out of the rut when they reached to him. Instead he shut everyone out, like he did in his previous life, and pushed Eris away too, instead of listening to what she has to say. I mean, sure, her approaches with fists were dumb, but that’s the main theme of this series, that everyone is flawed, and Eris is a dumbass and doesn’t know how to express herself. At some point Rudy could have tried to figure out why she keeps following him, instead of ridiculing her for years. He promised himself not to waste his second chance at life, yet that’s exactly what he did. It’s like man-god said, Rudy had the seeds of that in him all along.

That said, it probably wasn’t the first time man-god fucked someone over like that. Given the resemblance of how adult Rudy behaves to how Orsted acts in Turning Point 2, man-god must have done something to him too. We’ve seen Orsted as the villain for so long, but now it kinda makes sense why he was the way he was.

I don’t know how to feel about that whiplash with sudden change in Shu Gabi – from going crazy to the point of making those ridiculous villain faces in the previous episode, to crying with regrets and accepting Kenshuu’s hugs now. Also kinda bold of Kenshuu to tell Gabi that she shouldn’t have listened to Kin Reiga, while part of the reason for Gabi’s grudge was that Kenshuu herself listened to Reiga’s words and ghosted Gabi for a long time.

All that said I still enjoyed this show and I’m gonna be there for the next season. 7/10

Personally, I really enjoyed the series – both for its technical aspects (it was visually stunning, and I loved the sound design) and its writing. I also found the ending satisfying enough, even if the final minutes felt a bit abrupt. I don’t interpret Lara’s farewell as a permanent departure from Mari, but rather as a decision to move forward in the world she so desperately wanted to be a part of, and to become more independent, much like the other people she met during her stay on land. I like that Lara rejected the fairy-tale trope of a “saving”, all-consuming love for a single person, and instead, her love extends to the world, Mari, and herself, without being the sole thing that defines her. Could this idea have been presented better? Probably. Did that make the ending bad? I don’t think so.

I’m also glad the story didn’t go in the direction yuri fans might have wanted, as I find stories, where romantic love is practically the only thread holding everything together, boring. It makes no difference to me whether it’s yuri, yaoi, or a heterosexual relationship; the specific dynamic is irrelevant to me. I don’t need a scene where two people kiss passionately to recognize the love between them.

So, overall, I liked the show very much. I give it 9/10

- The Apothecary Diaries S3 - Obvious choice. The story so far has been varying from good to great. There’s also a movie in December. Hopefully will be available outside Japan in timely manner 🙏
- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners S2 - The first season was outstanding - one of the best sci-fi anime out there.
- Fool Night - Trailer looks great and it’s studio Shaft.

- A Wild Last Boss Appeared! S2 - season 1 started great, disappointed later. I don’t have a lot on my plate this season, so I’ll give it a second chance, but I’m not having high hopes
- Overgeared - looks generic, but has big titties, explosions, and from the trailers it looks like it has higher quality animation than your average JC Staff show, so it could be enjoyable kind of slop.
- FX Fighter Kurumi-chan - sounds like r/wallstreetbets the anime
- The Laid-Off Cheat-Granting Mage Enjoys a Second Lease on Life - I have no reason to pick this up, it looks like slop, walks like slop, but it’s P.A. Works, so I’ll give it a shot at least
- Suikoden: The Anime - the first show from Konami animation, so I’m curious
- Romelia War Chronicle - same as above. New studio, first time director.
There’s also a bunch of movies, but I won’t be able to see them this season, so I guess I can skip that here

Kensuke Ushio never misses. In addition to what you’ve already mentioned, OSTs from Agents of the Four Seasons, Devilman Crybaby, Journal with Witch, Dandadan were all great too. He’s so talented. His involvement with any anime project alone is enough for me to check out it out.

As for the others, that I haven’t seen mentioned yet, I really like Jujutsu Kaisen S2 OST. It has an interesting mix of electric, rock, and classical themes. Stuff like No Hesitation is fantastic

I liked the series from a technical standpoint - the visuals, direction, all were very good. Before this season started, I was pretty excited about it, considering that Naoko Yamada had a hand in it. Most of her films really speak to me, so this time, too, I was expecting something that would touch my heart. However, this show didn’t resonate with me as strongly as I’d expected. Overall, though, I liked the story, even though the time jumps threw me off a bit, and I feel like some of the characters weren’t developed enough. The political intrigue was my favorite part, even though Sitara was being played all the time. I hope there will be another season someday. I give this 8/10

Unlike most people, I didn’t particularly like Oshii’s movies, so going into this season, I didn’t expect The Ghost in the Shell to become one of my favorite series this summer. Considering that Naoko Yamada is at the helm of the second TV adaptation produced by Science Saru, I didn’t even expect to rank GitS above Jaadugar – and yet, here we are.

I really liked how the show’s creators managed to blend comedic elements with the serious and philosophical layers of the story. At no point did I feel those awkward shifts in tone that often occur in such situations in other productions, where creators clumsily try to weave jokes into the plot. I think the humorous elements actually helped in conveying the more serious and complex aspects of the story, because thanks to them, the characters didn’t come across as perpetually gloomy and one-dimensional. I think this is also reflected in the background art, where the modern cybernetic world was presented without a gloomy, depressing color palette. Instead, they used a lot of bright colors and that didn’t feel out of place at all.

If I were to go into detail about the things I liked, I’d probably have to write an entire essay, so I’ll skip the obvious elements like the animation and the actors’ great performances, and I’d just like to draw special attention to the audio design and direction. They did a truly great job here. I can’t wait to get my hands on the soundtrack.

Although this final episode wasn’t packed with suspenseful action, the creators managed to present an ending consisting mainly of dialogue in a fairly seamless way, making it clear that the story we watched was, for the most part, Motoko’s personal journey.

On the downside, the only thing that comes to mind is the breakneck pace of the action throughout the entire season, which was particularly noticeable during scenes consisting mainly of conversations. That said, I appreciate that the viewers weren’t treated like idiots and that everything wasn’t spoon-fed to them. I like when we are allowed to piece the narrative together based on fragments of information scattered here and there.

Ultimately, I rate this adaptation very highly. With a score of 9/10, this series earns a spot in my top 3 for this season.

I think it was an episode that exposed the biggest flaw of this series which is a breakneck pacing coupled with dialogues that are not easy to follow. It didn’t bother me in action-packed episodes because action kind of demands that, so it doesn’t feel out of place. But this one was mostly just talking, so that fast pacing stands out. That being said, I still enjoyed it, especially the court scene. With the dead eyes and the way Major talked, I got the impression that it was the Puppet Master surfacing at that moment. I can’t wait for the season finale, and at the same time I’m a little sad the show already ends next week.

While I agree that some people here should pay more attention to using spoiler tags (or just stop laying hints from source material altogether; nobody likes that, you’re not smart doing this, you’re just being an asshole, just stop, goddammit), in this particular case I think all hints to guess what OP said are there and I wouldn’t really call it a spoiler. Kishirika says:

That settles that! Now, farewell!

And walks away from Cliff, laughing proudly. And we can see Cliff crouching with his hand on his right eye. What else could have happened? Cliff was fine before. That demon who walked out of the cave did not touch him.

I just noticed this while rewatching the episode. She said this like battle aura is something literal, not some play on words. And later during the fight near the teleportation circle we also see how an attack from Elinalise with a naked blade on Atofe’s neck does not hurt her. So it seems some people in this world are protected from physical attacks by some kind of barrier? That’s not magic, though, because Zanoba sucks at magic. In one of the previous episodes, when the gang teleports to the flying fortress for the first time, I got an impression they were going in an order that corresponds to how much mana they have. I assumed that based on comments about how hard it was to teleport Rudy, who we know has disgusting amount of mana, and that Nanahoshi went first, and we know she has none. So Zanoba doesn’t have much mana either.

It’s funny that Kishirika seems to spew out some bullshit but if you listen to what she says, instead of how she says it, it’s all true. When she said Atofe is the most brainless fool of all demon kings who will never listen to reason, she was telling the truth. Same about the collapsed tunnel, and Moore appearing helpful at first but actually scheming something.

Fair enough. But yeah, Cliff is kinda useless in combat. You can see him cowering when that one last demon comes out of the cave with teleportation circle. Also it’s Elinalise’s idea to send him for help, so it’s easier to agree to that than waste time to argue with her while she wants to send her husband to safety knowing she can survive the fight and he can’t.

In my opinion, it’s gonna be hard to find something close to OnK. It mixes some elements that are hard to find together in other works. The closest thing I can think of is Perfect Blue.

There are some other shows that come to my mind, but they only share similarities with some aspects of OnK, not all of them.

If you liked the insight into the entertainment industry, you might like Shirobako, or Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju if it was the performing arts that caught your attention.

If you liked the dramatic take on

I agree about JJK. It’s distinctive enough with its gore, outstanding hand-to-hand combat, and power system in general. Also the fact that it has a great direction and Yuji is not a screeching banshee helps a lot. But I’m probably a little biased here, because it was my first proper shounen, so I wasn’t tired with all the tropes yet.

Somehow I managed to remain ignorant of anime until I was a proper adult. Partially the blame for that falls on the fact that when I finally got my hands on the Internet I became too busy playing MMOs, and the only way to watch anime, other than piracy, was TV. So that meant all you could get was Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. So yeah, Dragon Ball was probably my first anime, but at the time I was unaware that’s what it is. It was just another cartoon to me. And after that I didn’t touch anime willingly for a long time because of the stigma. Then I binged AoT and I was completely hooked. Now I watch a lot, but I still won’t touch Naruto or Bleach, because this kind of stuff doesn’t appeal to me anymore. I probably would have liked them as a teen, but now it’s just another run-of-the-mill shounen, so not what I’m into.

So that’s why Luminous mentioned Rimuru dying at some point. I’m not sure how to feel about all that time travel stuff yet. This can easily become a convoluted mess with no good explanations, but on the other hand the author was thinking about this for a while and planted some hints way back in the story, so maybe it will be fine.

I like that Veldora gets emotional after losing Rimuru, considering what an airhead he is. I was never sure if their friendship was something Veldora does on a whim, partially because Rimuru helps him in a dire situation, and partially because he found Rimuru to be more entertaining than destroying everything around, or was there something more. So it’s nice to know he actually cares.

I kinda expected they won’t kill Hinata for good, but not that Hinata sees Rimuru as a father figure.

Apart from watching over a dozen of seasonals, I finished a rewatch of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. And the show keeps its 9/10 I gave it when I first watched it. It was great. Especially episode 6 – it was an absolute masterpiece with fantastic direction. I think the show might have benefited from one more episode exploring

spoiler for the whole series
Lucy’s character, instead of giving us an exposition dump with her backstory told as a memory. And IMO the chase scene in ep 10 was a little overdone.

This probably sounds like nitpicking, but these might have been the only reasons I didn’t give it 10/10. But still, overall, it’s a must watch anyway – great story, direction, visuals, everything.

Some people say that the subs suck, but that’s about the original Netflix subs from the day the show aired. Fansubs are good. They’re not filled with slang as much as the dub, but they’re still enjoyable. I enjoyed both versions.

From what I’ve read, Bartosz Sztybor, the scriptwriter for S2, said that the new season will be even darker and more violent. I can’t wait to see it. I hope they won’t mess it up.

I saw some people complain about all the SoL stuff in the previous episodes before, but they provide an important context to events like the ones we’ve seen in this episode. It’s not just filler, those are the parts that let you savor the dramatic moments and understand characters better.

And the drama in this episode was great, specifically Nanahoshi’s outburst. Stellar performance from Wakayama Shion, even better than the one from S2. You can really feel her grief, and her words cut Rudy deep.

I was expecting that the expedition would take a long time, but they have found Kishirika surprisingly quickly. And leave it to the Great Emperor of the Demon World to make a fabulous entrance. It was nice to have this comical relief after that heavy first part.

Luca faceplanting cracked me up every time. We’re kind of speedrunning through his and Lara’s relationship, but I hope the rest of the series won’t be that rushed. Up until now the pacing was great.

I like the attention to detail, like the fact they all teleported in an order that seems to correspond to how much mana each person has, with Nanahoshi who doesn’t have any being first, and Sylphie and Rudeus being last. Also Sylphie looking worried more than anything, and clinging to Rudy’s arm, when she’s looking down over the edge, because she has a trauma from falling from the sky. Or how Rudy’s eye lights up with mana in preparation for a fight when he’s asked about man-god.

I wonder what’s up with the white glow under the arch because it wasn’t just Rudy, Sylphie had it too. Does man-god has some influence over her too? We can see some kind of alien looking figure on the relief. What was his role in the story told on the walls of Chaos Breaker? This episode brought us a lot of new questions.

I certainly didn’t expect Nanahoshi’s illness to turn so bad so fast. That was a lot of blood. Was it just because of illness? Or some effect flying fortress has on magic? I hope she survives. She’s one of the more interesting characters in the whole series.

This episode looked better than the last few in terms of visuals, fortunately. It was also top-notch in terms of comedy. The accidental summoning of the nicotine demon had me in stitches. I just hope Yaku will get better. Poor cat is definitely trying

This is shaping up to be one of the best shows of the season, and maybe even the year. This episode was sorely needed and let us recontextualize Lisa’s stance. No wonder she’s so hateful to humans. I’d be surprised if she wasn’t after all she went through over so many years.

At the end we hear Mari punch someone. Did she just think the last time I punched Lara she grew a pair of legs, let’s try again? That’d be so funny

Really nice episode. The prince (emperor? I don’t remember his title) is so easily swayed. Dude saw one dance and was like I don’t hate her anymore, as a matter of fact it might be the opposite right now

That mana when Rudy was performing the experiment gave me a little scare. Feels like holding a demon core with a screwdriver.

It feels that Perugius is a careful one. Nanahoshi says that there’s a limit of 12 guests, and he has 12 servants, probably so that each one can handle a potential enemy or something. Or it was just a joke and Nanahoshi repeated it unknowingly, heh

In the meantime, princess Ariel is casually strengthening ties to the Greyrat family since it looks like an easy way to gain new allies. Rudeus is connected to some ridiculously strong/important people, he just brought a king class mage as his wife, all his friends are some sort of nobles or heroes. And now Ariel is not only friends with his first wife, she is getting closer to Norn too. I wonder what exactly is she scheming
