[Discussion] What are some anime with unpredictable twists?

I enjoy plot twists in my stories.

Unfortunately - maybe it’s because I’ve consumed enough media - 99% of them are totally predictable. I would see the reveal coming a mile away.

So, are there any anime with an actually strong twist?

If I have to name one that truly impressed me, it is

major spoiler for an anime with title starting with the letter 'O'

Oddtaxi, with the reveal that the MC have an extreme form of visual agnosia.

That one caught me by complete surprise.

Are there are any more of such anime?

Now we know where the budget for episode 8 went. The aerial battles are what this anime do best, and boy did it deliver on this front. In fact, it reminded me of Gundam’s at times.

One thing I was left wondering is: what happened to that Federation mage commander? There’s no way he would go down so easily, so how did Tanya shook him off?

The episode is too short as usual 😭

With only one episode left, I wonder how they will wrap this up. The story of the schoolgirls is cute and all, but I am more invested in sensei’s story. I hope it would have a satisfying ending.

The obvious happy way to end the season would be: the girls’ latest work get accepted by the editor, which in turn reignites sensei’s passion and get her back into creating manga.

It could be a red herring but right now Zettour seems the most likely to the mole.

Regarding the upcoming assassination, I don’t see Rudersdorf going down that easily. I bet he already got wind of the plan and has counters of his own.

Or maybe it’s a 300 IQ play, and the plan to have Rudersdorf assassinated is in fact concocted between Zettour and himself. I’d imagine the ruse would allow them to trace the information leakage to the mole.

If that is indeed the case, our poor Tanya is a sacrificial pawn and risk being made public enemy number one. Unless… there is another plot twist that reveals that all of these are in fact orchestrated by the girl herself.

Also, I forgot to mention this last episode but the Empire’s situation mirrors Tanya’s quite a bit, doesn’t it? It could all be over if they just let go of their pride.

The anime hasn’t reach the point where the fact that Kazuma was isekaied was brought up.

Good because it is an isekai? It’s when they address the isekai-ed character’s previous life and make it an actual plot point.

It’s probably no coincidence that some of these isekais are all-time favourites of anime fans:
- Mushoku Tensei / Jobless Reincarnation
- Re:Zero
- Saga of Tanya the Evil
- Konosuba (plot point not adapted into anime yet; not much of a spoiler on second thoughts)
Personal favourite:

The butterfly effect has started the moment future Rudy came back. Present Rudy has acknowledged as much.

… some choices would become very hard … Taking Eris in … not love.

That’s working under the assumption that Rudy must make all the decisions himself.

How about having him consult his wives? How about being honest with them - even about Eris - and making these difficult decisions as a team? That’s how healthy relationships work, no?

Then again, looks like I’m taking this fictional piece of work too seriously 😅

I’m speechless. This episode is so good.

Wise words.

If I have to take a stab at how the finale will pan out: maybe Mari would offer to turn herself into a mermaid for Lara’s sake. This would in turn moved Lara, triggering her princess light, which would then restore everything to how things should be. And finally, they all live happily ever after.

Oh wow I was not expecting Shizuka’s serious arc in this season 😮

But in hindsight, it makes so much sense to use this arc as a season climax. Such a good call from the director.

That’s one issue I take with stories that are written to be realistic (like this one). I tend to find these relatively boring (too?).

Probably not just me (us?) who feel this way, which explains the popularity of battle shounens, fantasies, isekais, etc.

I cannot remember the title off the top of my head, but I remember reading about at least one manga that changed the magazine it was originally serialised in to reach a different market segment.

Doesn’t seem very meaningful for us.

Disagree. I found it useful.

After watching a substantial amount of anime, I noticed - based on my AniList stats - that I enjoy seinen anime more than those of shounen and shoujo. (You can guess which demographic I am a part of.)

This made it easier for me to seek out anime that fit my taste - though it certainly is a self-reinforcing loop.

I’d still check shounen / shoujo anime out; they simply have a higher bar to clear.

the target audience for these series is almost always either boys or men

It makes sense once you think about it. Straight dudes would rather look at girls, and vice versa.

If people think …, they need to watch more media

AFAIK the target demographics are determined not by the eventual audience, but by the publishers. So if they think it would appeal to shounen, it gets classified as shounen.

think Frieren’s most important parts are the fights

Personally, I can see why Frieren gets classified as shounen even after discounting the fight scenes. I find that the characters’ thinking lack a certain depth / maturity / complexity of seinen and josei anime.

That was anti-climatic. There was no plot twist of any sort.

At least my backup guess turned out to be right. That, plus a prediction from a while back (but limited to just Mari it seems). These tropes all pan out the same way…

I hope things are not as simple as Lisa is making it out to be. They still haven’t shown us the witch’s motivations. It still appears as if the king wronged the witch in past, from my POV at least.

Lastly, I’m so glad this anime is taking the yuri route, unlike

This prince is so fucking useless. It’s your own mother who’s in peril. Shouldn’t you be the first one to step up and draw the bow?!

The only character who may be more useless is the ever-absent emperor. I can understand his absence regarding the Reirin-Keigetsu fiasco, if he’s dealing with issues that are more pressing (i.e. national issues, duh). But now that his wife is dying, he better have a bloody good excuse.

Also, now that I think about it, the maidens / princesses and the prince are half-siblings, aren’t they? Since they should all share a common father: the emperor.

Why is Reirin the only one to call the crown prince nii-sama, but the maidens don’t? Maybe that’s why the prince turned out like that…🗿

I wonder what the upcoming plot twist would be.

Here’s a wild guess: the Lara whom we are following isn’t the same Lara from 200 years ago. She has the same appearance and memories, yes. But all we (and she herself) know about her are second-hand accounts from the witch and her “sister”. As to who / what she really is and how she came to be… hmmm. That’s where this conjecture falls apart.

I guess it would simply be the awakening of Lara’s father then

I bet Eris is going to have a showdown with her in the future.

I thought Cliff was chosen as the runner because he knows some speed-boosting magic or stealth magic, but nope, he’s just legging it 🗿

Wouldn’t it make more sense to have Elinalise run to the teleportation circle while Cliff stay behind to help Rudeus with the fighting? I assume that Elinalise, who is a frontliner, would have a faster running speed.

Could it be that Cliff is totally useless in combat despite his past brags?

Lastly, has Rudeus given up on wielding a sword? With low cast time, he is less dependent on a frontliner for protection. But the common trope in such fantasy stories is to be a swordsman who uses magic.

Yeah, it was obvious.

Too obvious, in fact, so now I share some of @Crank@ani.social’s suspicion that it is bait.

The straightforward line of thinking is that Gabi has to sacrifice her leg in order to place the curse on others. But it could also be that Gabi is trying to protect Kei and the empress by taking on part of the curse herself.

Or even if Gabi was indeed involved as an antagonist, given that forbidden magic exist, they could also reveal that mind-control magic is a thing and that Gabi is under the real mastermind’s influence this entire time. (Then it could be mind-control magic all the way down…)
