Easy to understand short explainer.

Running local LLMs on consumer AMD GPUs often comes with two pain points: configuring backend overrides (HSA_OVERRIDE_GFX_VERSION) and figuring out whether Vulkan or HIP/ROCm gives better token throughput on your setup.

I created two open-source tools to solve this:

1. ROCmFix Repo: github.com/xanpavle/rocmfix

Zero-dependency Python script runnable via single-line terminal command.

Detects GPU PCI IDs directly (Windows Registry / Linux lspci) to map the correct HSA_OVERRIDE_GFX_VERSION.

Automatically updates shell profiles (PowerShell, CMD, Bash, Zsh, Fish) and includes an undo command and driver diagnostic runner (rocmfix doctor).

2. InferBench Repo: github.com/xanpavle/inferbench

Automated benchmarking tool for local LLM servers (Ollama, LM Studio).

Rigorously compares Vulkan vs HIP/ROCm performance with warm-up passes, median of N runs, and cold-start VRAM unloading between test cycles.

I’ve played Zelda in Japanese and there’s a difference within the translations themselves on how they name items, NPC’s or key locations within the game. The quest logs in either ToTK & BoTW in the JP original are written from a first person perspective since it’s Link’s personal entries while the ENG localization rewrote them in second person addressing the player.

Even the perspectives are written differently: like from BoTW when you read Revali’s diary, the Japanese text frames it more around personal confusion and wounded pride as to why a prodigy like him is put in a supporting tier beneath Link. While the ENG localization leans into sharper, more confrontational direct insults, playing up a classic western “cocky rival” archetype.

Does anyone else here participate in the selfhosting hobby without a formal IT related education or a career in a similar field? I’ve only had one or two programming courses as part of my university education, but it was only very basic Python and C. I’ve never formally learned how to use containers, version control or anything else. Sometimes I regret not pursuing an education in IT/programming because there are so many things I’d like to accomplish but can’t (for example if there’s a feature missing in some project, or to feel safe in my abilities to harden my servers and my network in order to expose services to the open internet).

I responded to someone in comments on a post that may not get as much visibility, and wanted to share something that might help some others who are new or unfamiliar.

I referenced Quad9 DNS as probably one of the best private DNS you can use, Swiss based, no log, no tracking, no data to sell, etc. They also implement DNSSEC, DoH, DoT, QUIC, ECS (which you may or may bot want), malware blocking, content filtering, and maybe something else I’m forgetting.

Many DNS sinkhole apps, OSes, or systems can actually utilize Quad9 for your resolver while those systems also block ads. Below is my functional list of systems that I’m aware of, though I haven’t tested everything. I believe all are considered FOSS, too. If you don’t have a spare Raspberry Pi laying around, try running in HomeAssistant, Yunohost, ZimaOS (previously CasaOS), or others.

DNS sinkhole (Adblocking) apps:

1. Pihole
2. eBlocker
3. Technitium
4. AdGuard
5. uBlock Origin

Feel free to comment and add your own I’m maybe not aware of. I’m no software engineer, but I can read through some code, though not an expert, nor have combed through these personally. Usually I’ve tested/run at the recommendation of others over the years before my ban on Reddit (for shitting on AI).

I work with a mutual aid group that currently handles communications with Signal. This is acceptable from a security and privacy perspective, but severely lacking from a discoverability and reference perspective.

I’m looking for a text chat (it’s okay if it also supports voice and or video, but we don’t really need that) that is kinda similar to Slack or Discord regarding rooms, but that can be self hosted (obviously). Our general workflow is to allow new volunteers to join our “General chat” and then either be invited or join via open link any of the working groups they fancy. What I’m hoping for is a software that can allow us to have all those working groups in a side bar to increase engagement with some of the more behind the scenes options. I’d also love to have the ability to easily retain posts or bookmarks so we can build up quick references where we actually communicate. I haven’t found a clean way to handle the general chat for 2 reasons: 1) we would like to keep it open in such a way that anyone who wants to can join, and 2) there’s currently over 800 people and we regularly add more.

All told that makes the bulleted requirements for what I’m hoping for be:

• text chat software
• rooms/channels
• ability to pin posts
• ability to add arbitrary bookmarks or links
• ability to have rooms either public or private
• ability to have at least one room anyone can join without prior approval or invite
• ability to support at least 1000 users (not necessarily concurrent client connections–that can probably be about 50)
• ideally the communications can be encrypted

What I don’t need but might be nice:

• voice
• video
• file share
• polling
• reminders
• plugins

We value data ownership extremely highly hence looking for self hosting options over Slack or Discord. It’s okay if the general chat exists in a separate server so long as the main server with all the other rooms can federate with it somehow.

We do have some people with IT experience, and I am software engineer of over a decade so technical barriers in setting it up shouldn’t be an issue, but account creation and use for volunteers needs to be dead simple.

If anyone knows of something like this (or even a FOSS tool we may be able to extend functionally to fit the last 1 or 2 bullet points) I would love to hear your suggestions.

The hacks occurred from December 2025 through July 2026, according to a joint cybersecurity advisory issued Friday by Japanese, Australian, German, and U.S. authorities.

The hackers lure job seekers through social media, online job platforms, gig-work sites and freelance marketplaces. They asked responders to take part in virtual technical interviews or complete coding assignments. The attackers then instruct targets to download and run malicious files, sometimes under the guise of completing an assignment or troubleshooting a problem with videoconferencing software.

Today’s game is some more Pokemon Platinum. I was actually going to play Assassins’s Creed 3 (the other game I decided to commit too as a project), but I ordered a flash cart (DSPico) so I could play the game on original hardware. I don’t want this to be considered a “review”, but for anyone curious it has been serving me well. I have had a few hiccups but I suspect it’s the cheap no name microSD card included with the cart rather than the cart itself.

Anyways. So. All these screenshots were taken on official hardware which I think is pretty cool. They’re not the source images unfortunately. I found when I tried to upload those they’d get smeared because 1) they were BMP files and 2) they were like 480p being upscaled to whatever resolution my phone was. So I wrote a bash script that would convert them to JPEG and then upscale them to 1080p with Nearest Neighbor upscaling to preserve the pixel art.

I spent all evening messing around in the swamp basically to catch Pokemon. I caught everything except the other daily Pokemon. I did catch Yanma though which I think is the one that was available today. I’m not sure who the others are though so I’m trying to go in blind. Even though I’m trying to be on a deadline I thought It’d be fun to stick to a blind playthrough.

Currently I’m parked outside Crasher Wake’s gym. I tackled him once and got beat on his last Pokemon so I’m gonna try and do some grinding to beat him. My battery on my DS is fried so i can’t take my DS on the go (it dies in like 30 minutes) which makes it a little harder to grind exp. Thankfully I have a replacement on the way though. Tomorrow I’m gonna tackle the gym again. And maybe also track down false swipe. It’ll be handy to have that.

Turns out a lot of “competition” is the same company under different names, and it shows up in the price data too.

I have a server with desktop hardware (microATX motherboard and Core Ultra 7 265K CPU) which I use to run a Minecraft server. Its current physical location isn't ideal, so I'd like to put it in a rack mount chassis and move it to a server room I have access to through my university. However rack space in the room is limited, so it would be best if I can fit it into a 1U space.

From what I've heard the biggest issue with 1U is cooling, especially as the 265K can draw up to 250W. It seems like 1U microATX chassis do exist, like this one, but they don't look like they have good airflow, and I'm not sure where I would get a short enough heatsink. Could I realistically make 1U work, and if so what should I look for in terms of hardware? Or am I going to have to go with 2U?

Edit: I ended up giving up on 1U. Instead I bought a miniITX motherboard and am going with this 2U dual miniITX chassis. Way more vertical space to work with and it gives me the option to add a second server (something I want to do once memory/storage prices calm down) within the same rack space.
