Im not affiliated to Fermi/Harmony chat in any way, im just a user who liked it and want to share my experience of the app i find worthy of sharing

so i wanted to share a promising project that I have been using for a few months.

made this post to promote and share this platform since it needs more people, theres arent many atm and it deserves way more.

Fermi/Harmony Chat is free and open source discord like guild/community centered chat platform with most of the features that are expected from those platforms like message channels, vocal chats, threads, screensharing and more. Importantly the chat platform has a strict stance against LLMs AIs and AI generated slop like vibe coding and other abusive usage of AI that replaces human work and slop it in the process. sadly fermi/harmony is unique of having a strong stance against AI. (other similar projects sadly uses AI and excuses AI usage and vibe coding)

the platform also allows users to create their own client for the platform. harmony chat is the API and fermi is just the currently only working client on the platform (was a spacebar client previously until harmony was created as a spacebar fork with the goal of fixing the many issues and bugs present on spacebar) and in the future, instances are going to be federated and the process will be managed directly by the client (fermi and other clients) without being tidious and for advanced users like on matrix, so more easy and beginner friendly.

the platform also is more lenient on its acceptable policy and have a no bullshit moderation. (sadly not the case for other alternatives which sucks very much)

IMPORTANT

currently the project in its early stage and still has lots of bugs, glitches and various issues.

it is currently only accessible through a web browser (there is no app neither on desktop or on mobile)

lots of features are not finished and the platform still need major improvements. but i hope it is going to grow and become a viable alternative.

currently there are around 800 people are registered on fermi/harmony chat.

Would you believe that Wolverine has a 79/100 average review score on OpenCritic?

Now, when it comes down to the score itself, this is easy to explain. There are over 70 reviews in the aggregation, many of which rate the game positively. There are even a few perfect scores.

What’s strange to me is how often the positive scores belong to reviews that sound pretty negative. I’ve been reading so much about boredom and confusion and disappointment, but then also landing on a number that seems to describe a pretty good videogame. I don’t particularly care to litigate the numbered score of any or all reviews, but I am interested in what this exposes about what values are being privileged among the critical consensus.

Occasionally, the reviews themselves demonstrate what I am talking about. After spending paragraphs describing Wolverine’s combat as lacking weight, challenge, and eventually leaving him so disengaged that he lowered enemy health just to end fights faster, GameSpot’s Tamoor Hussain does clarify: “It may be hard to believe but all of that doesn’t mean the combat is bad. It is perfectly functional.”

Perfectly functional. As opposed to bad!

So often I find that functionality has the power to rescue something from being bad even after the critic has described the experience as bad.

I think AI won’t save us here, our base is broken. The internet is kind of shattered, most of the pages on the wild have broken and even wrong links. Divs doings the work of buttons, the semantics are totally lost. This, at least for me, feels like a good view point on what we can fix first, and with luck have a better internet.

I know about certain titles getting banned outright (Halloween, Hotline Miami 2) while some are released in the country with a form of censorship (such as the casino being forbidden to interact in GTA V, the corpses disappear in Left 4 Dead, etc.). even though those games have been classified abroad as there are other bodies for classification: CERO (JP), ESRB (US) or PEGI (EU) to list a few examples from other countries.

They’re all separate from rating movies (while apparently in Australia, they use the same rating system for movies in games) hence why they tend to get either banned outright or censored. Even if you import a copy from abroad into Australia, isn’t the existing classification enough? (Like if it’s rated M17 in the US, its roughly equivalent to a R18+ or if it has CERO C (15+) from Japan, similar to either a M or MA15+ rating).

Couldn’t an Australian gamer just be like, if they possessed a “banned” title in AU but has an foreign copy of that game with an existing classification from its country of origin, isn’t that already enough? It has a rating but not by the Australian Classification Board (rather its foreign counterpart specifically for games). Just argue that a M17 (ESRB) rating is closest to either a MA15+ or R18+. Same with CERO D (17+) or CERO Z (18+).
