Will A.I. wipe out humanity in 10 years, 20 years — or never? I don’t know. You don’t know. But I don’t want to wait to find out.

Call me a raging conservative, but I don’t want to see a dangerous technology continue to evolve rapidly when the owners of that technology acknowledge they can’t control it and they don’t know where it’s going.

For the sake of all humanity, the United States and China must reach an agreement to stop dangerous A.I. development.

The Failure at God School is officially getting a TV anime adaptation. The popular manga is written by Hyuuganatsu, author of The Apothecary Diaries, with manga art by Modomu Akagawara, known for Ani Tomo, and is currently serialized in Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume with cooperation on the original work from Seikaisha. A teaser visual has also been unveiled, along with comments from Hyuuga and Akagawara.

Replies were bombarded with harassment and enbyphobia, trotting out the usual, “Why did you say their? Is she a group?” talking point, like a wall of Buzz Lightyear toys repeating their stock phrase. Others ask how to un-back the project, some describe the announcement as a “threat,” and then come the usual buzzwords: Erika Ishii is a “toxic activist,” a “woke idiot,” “Antifa terrorist,” and a few blatantly racist descriptors we obviously won’t repeat here. Understandably, Double Fine turned off the comments.

the illusion of speed and urgency promulgated by the tech companies is also a ploy to misdirect both policymakers and the public. Unfortunately, it sometimes works, such as with Senator Bernie Sanders’s well-meaning but ultimately misguided proposed legislation to prevent the development of “artificial superintelligence.”

Describing them as “superintelligence” or “rogue models” ascribes agency to products rather than to the companies building them. This framing markets these companies’ products as “superhuman” and, at the same time, helps the companies evade accountability for their actions.

it’s been some time since the last purplepost, so here we are again. this one *might be the most intense one to date.

you might notice that Whites arm clips into the sofa. i really really tried not to let that happen, but the other option would have been to either change the hands color or to have it be even harder to tell what pose White is taking exactly. sooo i think this is a fair tradeoff.

some day i really might wanna transition to a style where each arm gets a slightly different shade so one can tell them apart, even when they are right in front of one another.

New guidelines will require all schools in Northern Ireland to offer girls the option to wear trousers as part of their uniform.

Education Minister Paul Givan said the revised guidance will allow girls to wear trousers as part of their uniform and also for PE and games.

Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason has described the decision as a “welcome but embarrassing U-turn by the minister”.

Education Committee chairman Nick Mathison said the minister will have to explain why he “took so long to move on this issue”.

The guidelines are legally binding under the School Uniforms Act which came into operation earlier this year.

Hey Lemmy, longtime open source developer here. After about a year of work on a side-project I dropped the first release candidate of Plume, a self-hosted, Markdown-powered, flat-file publishing platform and I’d love this community’s feedback. Read the release announcement or check out the demo and let me know what you think.

What is Plume?

Plume is a publishing (i.e. blogging) platform. It’s designed to make writing and publishing frictionless. Your content is just files, plain Markdown in a flat-file structure without a database. You can write locally and upload via SFTP or keep everything in Git and sync automatically. It’s Dockerized out of the box for easy set up. Full-text search (powered by YetiSearch) is built in so there’s no external service to wire up. Plume also includes details you’d expect like Shiki syntax highlighting, automatic light and dark modes and an auto-generated RSS feed.

The stack

Plume is written in PHP using Slim Framework + PHP-DI, tested with PHPUnit, statically analyzed with PHPStan, styled with PHP-CS-Fixer. The front end utilizes Alpine.js bundled with Vite. The architecture leans on Directory Lister, a project I’ve maintained for years.

But why?

I primarily developed Plume for my own use. I occasionally like writing short-form on Bluesky (or previously Twitter) but have been growing tired of handing my content to someone else’s platform. And long-form writing came with too much friction, killing my motivation before ever actually getting published. With Plume, publishing is as simple as creating a file and writing.

The AI caveat

Most software ships with heavy AI involvement these days. However, Plume was developed in my spare time over the past year, initially without any AI assistance. I’ve only recently adopted AI, and only sparingly, mainly for debugging, tests and help with documentation. However, every line committed exists because I put it there with intention. I’m not claiming perfection but I know how and why everything works, which matters for the long-term maintenance of the project.

Feedback wanted

Despite being designed for my own use, Plume was intentionally built so it could be shared. So try it, break it and tell me what’s missing. Ideas and questions can be posted on GitHub Discussions or Bluesky. For bugs open a GitHub Issue.

Executives working on AI at Microsoft and OpenAI admitted what its critics have been saying all along: Large language models are predatory pieces of technology that have been built on what a Microsoft executive called “an astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions,” and the “largest theft of labor in human history.” An internal Microsoft document said generative AI products have created a “doom loop” that is killing “the entire web.”

Those statements and a series of other mask-off moments feature heavily in an unredacted court filing that was unsealed Thursday in the behemoth New York Times vs OpenAI copyright lawsuit that has been winding its way through the court system for years. In a filing asking for summary judgment (basically, a filing with the court asking it to rule), lawyers for the New York Times laid out a series of admissions made by Microsoft and OpenAI executives in documents and depositions that until now had remained either sealed or redacted at the request of Microsoft and OpenAI.

It’s easy to see why the AI companies wanted to hide this from the public. The statements, taken together, are some of the most damning indictments of the ways LLMs were trained, how they worked, and the immediate threat they pose to human labor. It is a reminder that even as AI becomes more powerful and companies try to shift the narrative to the supposed existential risk of “superintelligent” AI, the tools they have already built were created by stealing from human creativity and labor and are by definition existential threats to the human labor market.

In a leaked document, the Irish Presidency proposes to EU Member States that the interest of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and SpaceX to make profits should take precedence over the fundamental right to data protection. Use of personal data “in the context of AI” should automatically be lawful. There seems to be wide informal agreement by many Member States. In particular, Big Tech would be able to use all personal data collected over the past decades with virtually no restrictions, as long as this happens “in the context” of AI. Schrems: “Under these proposals, the profits of AI companies would trump European’s fundamental right to privacy. This is nothing but a digital expropriation of Europeans.” All this is happening despite the key figures of AI corporations actively warn about the enormous risks associated with their own products.
