The Securities and Exchange Commission has reportedly subpoenaed several major Wall Street lenders to glean more information about their role in the near-collapse of AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness.

Regulators are seeking insights into Situational Awareness’s trades, use of leverage and communications with the investment banks, which include Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Citigroup and Bank of America, according to Reuters, citing a source familiar with the matter.

Situational Awareness plunged from about $45 billion to around $10 billion in late July after it was hammered in last month’s tech sell-off.

The hedge fund, led by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, was forced to unwind much of its publicly listed portfolio of large, concentrated, levered positions — which included SK Hynix and CoreWeave — after losses sparked several margin calls among its prime brokers.

My FOMO over The Duskbloods not coming to PC evaporated once I actually played it

PC Gamer My FOMO over The Duskbloods not coming to PC evaporated once I actually played it
preview

As a big Elden Ring person with an additional 600 hours in Nightreign, the FOMO of FromSoftware’s next multiplayer experiment, The Duskbloods, being a Switch 2 exclusive was hitting me hard. That is, until I actually played it: I spent the majority of the closed network test held over the weekend confused about what the hell was going on, and even when I finally learned, I wasn’t particularly impressed.

To be fair, the network test wasn’t built to make a great first impression. It was limited to one map, six playable characters, no build customization, solo queue only, and seemed to only have a portion of its intro tutorial. I also experienced borderline unplayable input lag from the Switch 2’s docked and handheld modes, which meant I was fighting the basic controls for longer than I’d like.

Assuming the final game will have all of that fixed and more, I might end up liking The Duskbloods in the end. Elden Ring Nightreign didn’t click for me for close to 20 hours, and when it did, I dug it so much I spent the first half of this year playing it daily, even climbing to the highest level of its ranked mode. The Duskbloods might reveal itself to be a masterfully created vampire multiplayer game, but as it stands right now I think it’s an aimless mess of intriguing systems that don’t cohere into anything worth PC gamers buying a $500 (for now) console for.

The Atlantic Logging In Was Never Supposed to Be This Complicated

Lately, the process of accessing apps and websites has grown dizzying. “I’m in password hell,” a colleague confided to me recently. “Every login attempt is playing the lottery.” The problem is not just the sheer number of digital accounts, all of which require their own password, ideally unique and unguessable (which usually also means un-memorizable). It’s the pileup of solutions to that problem: all of the different layers of software offering to remember your passwords, the six-digit codes sent to your phone, the authenticator apps, the passkeys.

digital drawing with two panels. first shows a stick figure holding a leash, saying "go do research. use hyperlinks. test the results locally. play a nice sound if you need help. i am right here and believe in you. go (heart)". next panel the figure is still holding the leash, which is connected to a smaller round robot that has a screen for a face and cat ears with a colon three mouth. in the room, there is a shelf named "resources" with books about powerpoints, cad 3D files, godot scene files, and a book named "skill.md". there is a holder named "tools" with objects hung onto it: glue stick, sledge hammer, pen, magnifying glass, scissors. on the right there is a computer showing a terminal with a sign "sandbox bash". top left text says very faintly "by maria on lemmy". it's barely visible.

The Tech Giant opposed the Demands – The Swedish Transport Administration signed anyway

preview

The Swedish Transport Administration was recently revealed purchasing Microsoft services and discarding their own regulations and any Swedish or EU laws in the process. The following text is a translation of news article by the Swedish public broadcaster Sveriges Radio. “Ekot” is one of their programs and “P4 Dalarna” is one of their regional stations. Minor edits were done to the raw translation for clarification.

The Tech Giant opposed the Demands – The Swedish Transport Administration signed anyway

  • The Swedish Transport Administration released all requirements in negotiations for an agreement with Microsoft, requirements that the lawyers at the authority considered necessary.
  • Among other things, it was about the fine, the principle of publicity and data transfer to other countries, shows Ekot’s and P4 Dalarna’s review.
  • Because the tech giant’s delivery was considered crucial for the business, the Swedish Transport Administration signed the agreement despite Microsoft rejecting all demands in three rounds.

When the Swedish Transport Administration was about to sign a license agreement with Microsoft last year, the agency’s lawyers discovered several problematic points in Microsoft’s standard terms.

They entered into a negotiation that is described in detail in a service note that Ekot and P4 Dalarna have seen.

The lawyers identified 18 conditions that needed to be in the agreement – as minimum requirements.

The demands were brought up in negotiations with Microsoft, which responded that it was not willing to meet any of them.

Demand for fines and compliance with the law

The points were then whittled down to a shorter list, which included, among other things, that Microsoft, like all other suppliers, would have to accept that the Swedish Transport Administration may have to release information in accordance with the public disclosure principle.

And also that the storage, processing and transfer of data must comply with Swedish and EU legislation, and that Microsoft would have to pay a fine in the event of deficiencies and would not be able to terminate the agreement without reason.

But the slimmed-down list of demands was also rejected, and after Swedish Transport Administration’s stripped down its list again, there were only three demands left, which were described as “absolutely necessary”.

But Microsoft also said no to them, and had thus finally rejected all minimum requirements.

“Crucial”

But despite that, the Swedish Transport Administration then decided to accept the agreement, because the tech giant’s delivery was considered crucial for the business.

According to the IT researcher Björn Lundell, it is difficult to gain insight into how this type of negotiation takes place, and it is unusual for it to be this clear how authorities choose to accept the terms of the tech giants.

– I would say that is unusual. It’s not what you usually see.

Shall assess suitability

The Swedish Transport Administration does not agree to an interview, but states in a written comment that it cooperates with both suppliers and other authorities to ensure that cloud services meet all requirements for both security, legality and digital sovereignty.

Suitability assessments will also be carried out, to prevent security risks, before introducing cloud services. But they don’t want any further details around that so as not to “expose vulnerabilities”.

Microsoft declines an interview and writes in an email that it does not comment on individual customers, but that it works together with customers to find opportunities and risks and that it has all protections in place for data.

Leaf Developers Geekstrada and Helaas: The Full Interview

This is my full interview with Geekstrada and Helaas, the two developers behind Leaf, the custom firmware for the MINILOONG Pocket 1 (which you might have seen Russ cover a couple of weeks back with a video, if you’re into the retro handheld scene).

We chat about how they came together, why Leaf exists, the thinking behind its development, the Colorway Studio you might have used when buying Retroid’s Nova, and the community growing around the project. It’s a long one, but there’s plenty in here about the people, ideas and tinkering behind Leaf.

I know these kind of interviews can be a little niche, but I think that so often people use these apps, programs, projects and builds without knowing the people behind them. I think I’m up to over 60 interviews now, so this is my tiny project of remedying that. Hope some enjoy it :)

Vapor World: Over The Mind is a Soulslike Metroidvania with an evocative, painterly art style reminiscent of Lies of P and the narrative platformers of Playdead. According to Korean studio Alive Inc, the game had 100,000 wishlists just before its early access launch on August 19, mostly on the strength of a demo available since January 2025.

But what should have been a triumphant early access launch went pear shaped very quickly. At launch, few talked about the quite distinctive worldbuilding or the parry-heavy combat. Instead, all focus was trained entirely on something absent from the popular demo: very obvious AI use.

Day 769 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

Today’s game is Old School Runescape. I got approached by a wizard who asked me to solve his maze. I love mazes so i figured why not. I have to admit though it threw me for a loop with how trippy the walls are. It made navigating it difficult. I managed to make it through though with around 60% rewards left so not too hard.

Honestly, that brings me to my main point. I love how Runescape isn’t really grounded. They’ll just throw shit at you and i love it for that.

I’ve spent the last few days just running quests and trying too get my levels up. I hope to take on the Dragon Slayer quest next. After that though i’m not really sure what my next goal is. Maybe i’ll travel somewhere i havent been yet.

Anyways, a lot of these quests have kept me hovering around Lumbridge. I neglected a lot of my earlier skills so these are perfect for leveling up everything i had ignored.

That’s probably all i’ll end up doing for the rest of the evening. Tomorrow i think i’ll go back to control. I finally caught up to my save last time i played and i don’t want to let that go to waste.

My preference is to immediately remove cookies from domains, as soon as (or just some seconds after) a tab with that domain is closed. Except some whitelisted domains specified by me.

To do this, I’ve used – for years – Cookie Autodelete. But I’ve discovered now that it doesn’t work with Firefox’s Strict Mode (the extension says “strict mode is not supported”).

All in all I think my understanding of Firefox’s capabilities and policies regarding cookies and similar extensions is outdated. I’d be grateful to anyone who can offer insights or links to well-informed sites about this.
