i posted this on reddit before but i wanted to get your opinion on this

i use my familys google drive/photo thing (i cant really change) and i obviously want us to switch, but my mom (who take care of this whole thing) says that she likes the ecosystem that google has. Like she uses her calendar and stuff. The closest ive found is proton, which is fine, but it doesnt really have the best rep. Any alternatives?

BTW: im not gonna self-host since im not comfortable hosting such a big thing like this

Sharing because Kayin’s talk about achievements made me think about why do I even accept them in games at all so I disabled them in Steam (the only way to do this is by disabling the whole overlay =_=) and found that I don’t miss them at all.

I’m looking for an alternative to my current notes app notally. It’s a great app but I am only able to make to-do lists or plain text notes, and I can’t combine both (like plain text with check boxes sometimes). I would like to automate some notes too so I think app with markdown support will allow me to do both.

What I’m looking for :

• FOSS
• Markdown support
• Good looking with tiling view
• SIMPLE, I already have Joplin for work purpose but it’s too heavy, I want an app that opens instantly like google notes or apple notes (or notally lol).

Do you have some recommendations ?

TL;DR: In the last year, the Wikimedia Foundation has fired several union organizers, including those that worked on the Community Tech team - a team dedicated to building features for the volunteer community that edits Wikipedia.

As the Wiki Workers Union tries to get the Wikimedia Foundation to recognize their union, it is worth remembering that this is not the first time that the Foundation has worked against the community.

Wikimedia Enterprise is a betrayal of the volunteer movement community of Wikipedia editors, as the Wikimedia Foundation is providing privileged access to big tech AI companies to the Wikipedia corpus - a body of work that the Foundation does not own.

Movement volunteer communities contributed to Wikipedia under copyleft licenses - licenses that work to ensure that the work remains free (as in speech). The big tech AI companies do not license derivative works under copyleft licenses and often do not even attribute where the works came from.

This means that volunteers are working for big tech for free, and the Wikimedia Foundation is selling privileged access to that free labor.

It is against that backdrop that the current unionization struggle unfolds.

The human brain has evolved to learn from specific instructors. When a child hears a gentle spoken word or a soothing lullaby from another person, when their cry is responded to, their brain lights up. Nurturing interactions, or what child-development experts call “serve and return” exchanges, help shape and strengthen the 1 million new neural connections taking place in a child’s brain every single second. Every time a child cries or serves up a bid for attention and receives a caregiver’s response, that back-and-forth helps build the circuits underlying their communication, learning, and emotional well-being. No other input, not even Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D performed by the Berlin Philharmonic, is capable of activating the neural circuitry the way human interaction does.

Until now. Generative AI may be the first technology in history sophisticated enough to mimic the social interactions that build our brains. Research has demonstrated that infants as young as six months old respond physiologically to interactions with humanoid robots in ways that mirror their response to live humans; another, small-scale experimental study recently found that, after young children interacted with a chatbot, most of them for the first time, they asserted that the AI could perceive the world with humanlike senses and understand and learn as people do.

This technology is already showing up in children’s lives. The talking plush robot that purports to be a child’s best friend is obviously driven by AI, but many parents may not realize that their Amazon Echo recently received a software update that converts the Alexa voice assistant into a full-blown chatbot, using the same fundamental tech that fuels ChatGPT; toddlers asking for information about animals or a joke or a bedtime story may quickly find themselves in the habit of engaging socially with a large language model.

As a pediatric surgeon, researcher, and technologist who has spent decades studying how children’s brains develop, I am concerned about these technologies rolling out and being used by children in the home and at school before we have a full sense of their safety and what they do to young minds. And I am compelled to point out what we do know about human development: that human connection, in all of its imperfection, is foundational to brain development. It can’t be engineered or recovered later.

So I read the extended novel by Shinkai and Kanoh on '5 cms per second', and I think there are a bunch of things I truly disagree on.

In the second part, Cosmonaut, Takaki mentions how they didn't want to add the feelings they felt under the cherry blossom to their letters, since, I quote, 'It was a moment of absolute purity. ... It was a moment that could never be put to words.'
Yet he also says that doing so would preserve it, which is why neither of them did it, since forcing a description on it would ruin and tarnish the beauty. Yet he acknowledges that words were all he could send her, despite language being a flawed tool. Maybe he was right about language being a flawed tool.

It drove them to hopelessness how the letter had no mention, no remnant of that experience. And that's the reason why they evem stopped trying to describe their feelings and the letters became sparser and sparser, and also devoid of their depth, only containing everyday affairs.

BUT LANGUAGE WAS ALL THEY HAD. THE SHARED EXPERIENCE MIGHT BE PERFECT, BUT THEY HAD EMAIL! PHONES! LETTERS! THEY HAD TO COMMUNICATE! TELL EACH OTHER HOW WHAT THEY EXPERIENCED WAS PERFECT. EVEN THAT ALONE COULD'VE BEEN ENOUGH! THEY TRIED TO PRESERVE THE PERFECTION AND LOST WHATEVER THEY HAD!

I find this entire section to be a cheap and easy excuse and a way out of responsibility. Yes, love is a responsibility. It takes effort. A lot of it. But I can't really blame kids for not having maturity in life I guess. But one would expect them to be better because they were supposedly much more mature, beyond their ages.

I do wonder, what would've happened if they were honest with each other? If they wrote their feelings, no matter how imperfect. Maybe things would've been different.

I truly think Shinkai and Kanoh fumbled here. But maybe that was the message. Feelings alone don't preserve a relationship. It requires a constant effort and even more constant and clear communication.

However, the way the media was framed, the second novel in particular, makes it seem really, really weird. And the rest of the media just shows Takaki to be someone stuck in the past even though he found much success in his life in his own way (again, second novel).

Today’s game is some more Minecraft (Attack of The B-Team). The server i’ve set up has been thriving. Today for example we got everyone building pixel art as a sort of group activity. I will admit the design is not my own, i followed a guide i saw online and painted it with canvas blocks. It was fun building it though.

Another player did Kirby, and someone else was doing Album Art. They aren’t pictured there though as they did it after this screenshot.

You’ll also notice the three statues of our players being crucified. We may have taken a joke a little out of hand and made statues of some players being Crucified. It’s all in good fun and has spawned it’s own server lore though.

Right next door too we build a Walmart Super Center. I was only helping so i’m not sure what the plan with it is, but i assume the hosting player wants to sell stuff. I’ll have to wait and see though.

Anyways, on a more personal front one of our players has started a reign of terror with Luggage from Tinker’s Construct. The things make this annoying ass scuttling noise. I kind of like it though because it tells you when he’s close. You can be there minding your own business then suddenly you’re flooded with luggage.

There’s been a ton of other stuff too, that there’s just not enough time for me to go over (such as Bernie here), so i may very well follow this up with one tomorrow or another day soon. I’ve never had a Server so full like this and it makes me excited to share it.
