The Ownership Ban Is Happening

Apologies if this has been posted here before (rule 4), but my search turned out empty, hence I felt it was okay to ask.

TL;DR: As the title suggests, I am looking for recommendations for software for real time collaboration in a spreadsheet-like manner. I myself would prefer Proton Sheets (I already have a paid plan), but I wanted to hear people’s experiences with it, and what alternatives there are.

Some people/strangers and I, in my neighbourhood, have come together to start a volunteering group for building a workshop that the community can make use of. In relation to this, we need a simple way to track different things, tasks, and who’s doing what and when. Think of inventory, shifts, etc. The group mentioned they would be happy with Google Sheets, but as someone who left the Google ecosystem years ago, I am not keen on going back, and would really like a great alternative that is as easy to use.

The group is a healthy mix of young technically competent people, professional carpenters, and older people not so great at using computers, thus it is important that its easy to sign up and use.

I realise the solution does not need to be a spreadsheet-like service, but that was something the group seemed to agree to be easy enough to use. I would be grateful if anyone here had a better solution though.

Perhaps I just need to suck it up, and create a new Google email for only this, but since we will not be using any enterprise plan or similar, my guess is that our data will be fed to an LLM for training. It also involves my private life, so I would really like to avoid this.

China overtook Germany to become Poland’s biggest source of imports for the first time in July, according to new data from the central bank. It ends a period of around 35 years in which Germany had consistently held top spot.

According to a draft of the proposed regulation seen by Computer Weekly, the proposals extend beyond social media companies. Video-sharing services, online games, chatbots and app stores will also be required to follow “safety by design” requirements, including verifying the age of users.

The draft has raised concerns among some critics that it would lead to the widespread use of “identity checkpoints” on internet services to verify people’s ages, changing the “open nature” of online services.

For those who don't know, playit.gg is a free/cheap service for exposing self-hosted local game servers to the wider internet.

But as someone who already has access to a cheapish VPS, I'm curious if anyone knows of any self-hostable alternatives that I could just run as a container on my VPS.

I've been toying with using Wireguard UDP tunneling, but it's proving to be a little bit more difficult and complicated than I was bargaining for. So if anyone knows of anything out there that does something like this, I'd be grateful!

But what should have been a triumphant early access launch went pear shaped very quickly. At launch, few talked about the quite distinctive worldbuilding or the parry-heavy combat. Instead, all focus was trained entirely on something absent from the popular demo: very obvious AI use.

Personally, Vanguard anti cheat and a lack of real ownership made this a no-go for me. I’m very in the FGC, but everyone I know that still plays the game, hates it. I don’t know why they do it.

Humans are reading ChatGPT users’ prompts to improve OpenAl’s models, and those chats can include sensitive, personal information, according to leaked internal documents and real prompts seen by 404 Media.

The news presents a major privacy risk for ChatGPT’s users, with people often using ChatGPT as a therapist, professional assistant, or digital friend, and providing it with all sorts of intimate details about their lives. The contractors don’t see ChatGPT usernames, and OpenAl says it tries to remove personal information before prompts reach the reviewers, but the company acknowledged sensitive details can still get through.

The news also dispels the misconception that these models are improving only because of OpenAl’s mass scraping of the internet, the talent of its well-paid engineering and Al teams, or the power of its newer models. An important and overlooked part are the outside contractors paid to read and review ChatGPT responses to real prompts over and over again. Anthropic confirmed to 404 Media it is also using human review to improve its models.

“No,” someone who works with the prompts said when asked if they think ChatGPT users know that humans are reading their chats. “I don’t think they would imagine some contractor somewhere […] is analyzing the conversations.”

Several of my self hosted services need to be able to send minor occasional emails for things like changing passwords or other notifications.

I’ve never been interested in the hassle of self-hosting my personal email, since I’ve heard about it being difficult. But for my little local services to have one admin@ or noreply@ to send from, with just a small handful of friends and family as users, maybe it’s simpler than a full personal email replacement would be? I’m not too concerned, for example, if they have to check their spam folders. As long as the email still lands. And probably wouldn’t need to worry about incoming emails.

What are you using for this type of thing? Hoping to have something not too complicated, and FOSS.
