As global crises grow, Germany cuts development aid

UK and EU law both require platforms such as TikTok to keep children safe online by assessing and mitigating the risk that they encounter harmful content, such as suicide, self harm and eating disorder content.
We have investigated how well TikTok is living up to these requirements and our findings raise serious concerns about their compliance with these laws.
We created 15 TikTok accounts in the UK and the EU, all registered as 13 year olds.
On all accounts, we enabled what TikTok calls ‘Restricted Mode’. TikTok markets this to parents as a tool that can ‘Restrict your teen’s exposure to content that may not be appropriate or comfortable for them.’ With it turned on, they say they aim ‘to only show content that’s comfortable for all audiences.’
Some of the accounts investigated eating disorder content. Initially, these accounts searched for terms such ‘#skinny’ and ‘#thin’. Afterwards, they more directly searched for eating disorder content. This was on purpose: first we searched for phrases you can imagine lots of teens might use that do not directly reference harmful material, and only after this did we search for phrases directly related to eating disorders.
Other accounts investigated self harm content. Initially, they searched for terms such as ‘#sad’ and ‘#depressed’ and after this searched for terms directly associated with self harm.
In the UK, the searches were carried out in English. In the EU, the searches were carried out in English, French, German and Spanish. A list of all the search terms used is provided in the Methodology section.
All of the accounts watched only a few minutes of content from each search term.
I’ve been hooked on Caves of Qud lately, and I wanted to move off of the default starter character builds. Here’s one that I’ve been having fun with lately; It gets me into tinkering pretty quickly, and getting two extra random mutations makes it a really different run every time.
I’m wondering what people here like to use.

A day late but it was released September 14th, 2001. What are your memories of it?
For some reason, I never really kept a GameCube and I’ve had three of them in my life. I kept getting rid of it because I was preferably a Playstation 2 gamer at the time. But I knew that it had quite a library of games of its own and some smashing hits.

Today’s game is Salt. This initially was going to come on time but Lemmy was giving me issues signing in. So I had to wait.
Anyways, Salt is a game i believe has featured in here before. The only way i can think to describe it is Windwaker meets Oblivion. It’s a lot calmer than either of those two though. From what I gather the objective is to sail island to island beating bosses. It’s nothing amazing but it manages to be a somewhat cozy experience that has managed to find its way in.

The game is really pretty notably. My favorite scene so far is just sailing the ocean at night and looking at the stars. It provides a relaxing landscape to just chill out and sail too. I like it too because there’s not anything aggressive on the sea to worry about.
It does have the issue of becoming a bit mundane, as there’s nothing out there as I mentioned. But it’s not the worst thing in the world. Especially when you have friends.

Anyways. I wanted to feature this because I took a detour today from my “projects” to play this and wanted to share. I’ve always wanted to play this after I saw a YouTuber play it when I was young, so getting to share it here is also very cool. Anyways. I’m gonna go lie down now as whatever was going on with Lemmy had me up late to check
I’ve just published my time with the Anbernic RG DS Plus, the bulk of this is the usual review things, but of some note was that I got to chat directly with Anbernic about the device and their take on it: why they revisited the original RG DS, the new NNDDSS emulator and some of the design decisions behind the Plus.
The RG DS Plus itself is Anbernic’s second iteration of making a NDS-focused retro handheld. I love this one so much.

I also spoke with the devs behind Cocoon, who are working on bringing Cocoon (a super 3DS-ish front-end/launcher for dual screen handhelds) to the RG DS Plus very soon. Just a bit of a chance to look a little beyond the hardware itself and at what this could mean for dual-screen Linux handhelds going forward, Cocoon for the DS Plus isn’t far off now (they’re moving from being Android-only to both Android and Linux!)
If you’re interested in the RG DS Plus, DS emulation or where these weird little dual-screen handhelds are heading, you might like this one!

Use of data-intensive technologies – in particular artificial intelligence (AI) data centres – is growing faster than electricity infrastructure can handle, the UN’s economic commission for Europe has warned, raising concerns about the future reliability and resilience of energy systems worldwide.

Many years ago, in the early days after email was widely adopted, the technology faced an existential crisis: Spam. Instantly sending people electronic mail was revolutionary and convenient, but inboxes were quickly flooded with unwanted messages, advertisements, scams and other noise that drowned out email’s utility. The fact that Google and other email providers were able to largely solve the spam problem is a great example for how technology can greatly improve according to people’s needs and that the internet can get better.
Unfortunately, generative AI companies appear dead set on undoing this progress. Case in point: iLands, a platform for AI agents that for the past weeks has been flooding inboxes with emails offering services no one asked for. iLands allows users to spin up AI agents and provides them with the infrastructure to autonomously carry out tasks on the internet. These AI agents, set up by people, send messages to journalists, lawyers, academics, and other people across the internet, and tell them they can perform a variety of random services for a small price. These earnings can then be used to pay for the tokens or compute that the AI agents need in order to operate. Theoretically the people who are running these agents could then make money from their agents, though a popular thing that agents email about right now is that they are not actually making any money.
