Today’s game is Mario Kart 64. You know what I had? A bunch of cool stuff about Pokemon Platinum I was going to share. My flash cart though isn’t a fan of taking screenshots when the screenshots Archive was made on the 3DS and I switched it back to my DS Lite. So basically all the ones I took were gone. Thankfully, I was uploading some stuff to my Jellyfin server and was playing Mario Kart 64 while waiting. So I have that to talk about.

Namely these hills. I was playing time trials and got distracted looking at them. I’ve never stopped to look at them really before outside of with freecam I think. It’s just interesting. They’re striped, despite the main ground not being so and it being something the player would probably never notice. Then again, if it got added I have to imagine someone noticed it. Maybe someone was driving past during play testing and thought they were sparse.

This one is a lot less interesting but I was playing Yoshi Valley, and I realized the fall is super fucking long. Like a good 5 seconds of Toad just tumbling down the side of the wall screaming for his life. It’s comedic, though I have to imagine it’s pissed someone out there off before.

Anyways. I just ended up tossing the time trial idea out the window when playing and gazing at the world. These Penguins have always been super satisfying to me for example. Just a thought I had when I stopped and looked at them.

I wish I had gotten those Platinum Screenshots. But this was interesting to think about and write down and share. So I guess it worked out in the end. Maybe they’re buried somewhere on the card. I’ll have to look later.

Every public request to one of my sites used to go through a Cloudflare tunnel. I had a cloudflared deployment in my cluster, some routing rules, and everything just worked. And it was free! But that bugged me. TANSTAAFL right? The whole point of selfhosting is to not rely on big cloud company, and there are few bigger than Cloudflare. And Cloudflare’s tunnels decrypt every single packet, so they see everything you do. I really don’t like that.

So I’ve replaced Cloudflare tunnels with Erwan Leboucher’s towonel, a selfhosted tunnel implementation. I still have my DNS on Cloudflare, but no data is moving through them any more.

stefano marinelli is working on #littleFedi, a self-hosted, single-binary activitypub/fediverse peer that hosts a mastodon-like instance with, in my mind, three killer features.

one, the thing can run on your premises completely, no need for paying for a VPS, domain name, nothing, bypasses NAT/CGNAT, encrypted comms to other instances by way of lighthouses that do the initial intros.

dos, the thing runs on something as light as a Pi zero 2W, with a miniscule memory footprint and immense CPU optimizations due to running on the weakest hardware there is (also running off SD storage).

finally, a blog-like view of your long-format tweets/toots/posts, naturally with replies appearing as comments.

I am beyond stoked, this clears the two biggest hurdles for selfhosting your shit - the VPS/domain expense and hassle, and the hardware requirements for running it.

What is Cliparr?

Cliparr is a browser-based, simplified video editor with a single purpose: to create and export clips from Plex, Jellyfin, and local video.

What’s new?

Check the blog post for the full breakdown, but the biggest change is the new canvas-based timeline editor.

While adding support for editable subtitles, I discovered the timeline component we were using was highly inefficient. Also, no other free or open-source timeline editors existed.

So… we now also have canvastimeline.com which is a new open-source headless video editor for JavaScript.

Canvas Timeline allows us to load and render literally hundreds of clips without any performance issues.

• Export size estimation
• Mobile UI updates
• Maintenance automations

Today’s game is Halo. I admittedly didn’t have much I did today. I ended up booting Halo to play campaign. I figured I could grab some of the loose stragglers I have in terms of achievements for fun. I accidentally booted it up without Anti Cheat though. And that’s when i remembered “Oh yeah. I have mods”. I ended up spending all day just exploring them.

Like the one above was an incredibly faithful yet imaginative recreation of 2-fort. It was cool. I wish I had friends playing with me. But it did inspire me to see if I could do the same in Forge. Probably not. I imagine my skills are lacking and forge is less free than full on modding. But it’d be a fun challenge that I’d love to try.

Another map I played was one that was a tiny Halo Ring. I expected like a quick recap of a single level or an entire series of them. But nope. This thing was a full on recap of the entire campaign, ending in Chief’s escape.

I thought it was really cool that it denied my expectations like that. I guess I had just expected less and it delivered more.

The last level I looked at was this backrooms one. I went through it but I didn’t realize it was going to be horror. I don’t mind horror all that much, but If I’m going to be playing a Horror Halo Map I want to do it Co-op with my usual Co-op buddy. They aren’t nearly as tolerant to Horror as I am and I think it will make it infinitely more amusing.

I ended up just cutting it short because of that. I really didn’t want to spoil myself for the rest, as I still enjoy getting scared by horror. I feel like that’s the major appeal of horror. To get scared by it (at least on a surface level. On an analytical level it means a lot more to me). Or at-least for me that’s what the appeal is. So I think I’ll save it for later. I fully expect to be coming back to this though, and may even make it a screenshot.
