Day 760 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

preview

Today’s game is some more Control. I was playing around with Aspect Ratios trying to see if I could get some interesting ones to work with in Photo mode. Unfortunately the highest 4:3 the game supports is 1600x1200 I could use gamescope to jump up to 8K 4:3, but that was lagging my game even if I dropped the resolution majorly. I decided to just have my fun with 1600x1200 and then stick to 16:9.

I also figured out how to get a good balance of Resolution w/ Raytracing. I capped it at 30 FPS. But a stable 30 FPS is more than tolerable for me, so I’m more than happy sticking to that.

My first thought was “Damn, these are some amazing Reflections”. My second thought was “Damn, somethings are a little fuzzy”. Still, not too bad as far as I’m concerned, especially getting to see those amazing reflections on windows and stuff. It brings it really high up in quality.

The Physics simulation is pretty too with all the shattering glass. I spent a little while trying to get a good shot with the glass and I got this one which I rather like.

Anyways, enough about graphics. Let’s talk about Ahti. I love the guy. Genuinely he might be one of my favorite characters to come out of a Remedy game. Something about this Janitor with an air of mystery and power is just so fucking cool. Plus his role in Alan Wake 2 is even cooler. I just hope he doesn’t get too tied up in everything to the point it starts being like marvel movies where you need to watch another franchise to understand the other. Granted, for that I think we’d need like a “Ahti the Video Game” or something like that, so maybe I shouldn’t be too worried.

I made it to the research department and got sidetracked playing with the camera mode before my time for the day was up. I’m hooked on playing this again so I’ll definitely be playing some more tomorrow because I missed this game.

Even more terrible puns!

Why should you never invite a circuit board designer to prom?

After the first write, they will leave you on read(-only mode)

why?

PROM is Programmable Read-Only Memory, which can be written to only once, after which it is read-only

What does the maintainer say when asked whether one can contribute to their permissively licensed project?

M I Teasing you? Of course you can add Apache 2!

why?

MIT and Apache 2(.0) are both permissive open-source licenses, and they replace parts of the phrases “Am I teasing” and “a patch too”. I think you pronounce Apache like paper mache, with a shey rather than a tch, but it nearly works!

Why did the animated graphic end so quickly? It was in a GIFfy! (for the people who advocate for a soft G)

What did the villain say to the protagonist in a popular meme? GIF me your power! (for the people who prefer a hard G)

What do you call a Japanese style of mood boards? JPEGboards!

DeepSeek’s dsh: Flexible agent architecture or overkill?

preview

DeepSeek has released dsh, an open-source agent harness for developers. It is a Node.js-based runtime, licensed under the MIT license, that can be launched locally with: npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web It starts a web interface on localhost. The project is currently labeled a developer preview, and DeepSeek warns that the API may change significantly, including compatibility-breaking changes. The interesting part is its plugin-oriented design. The project treats many parts of the agent stack as replaceable components, including: Model adapters Memory backends Session logging Routers Output parsers Sandboxing Storage Scheduling The user interface These components use a common plugin interface and run on DeepSeek’s Cordis meta-framework. That design could make it easier to experiment with different models, tools, memory systems, and agent workflows. At the same time, it raises practical questions about plugin security, supply-chain risks, API stability, sandbox isolation, and whether the architecture will remain manageable as the project grows. The repository has attracted substantial attention since its release, although GitHub stars are not necessarily a reliable measure of technical quality or long-term adoption. What do you think? Does a highly modular plugin architecture make agent development more flexible, or does it introduce another layer of complexity that will be difficult to maintain?

Competendo - Digital Toolbox - Apps and Tools

I have found this website today, that is supported by the Erasmus+ programme of the EU. The linked sub section is about apps and tools that fall under these criteria:

  • Open Source
  • Non-Profit
  • High privacy level, no monetisation of user data

It might not be a complete list but maybe someone finds it useful complementary to Privacy Guides and the like.

Maybe the rest of the website is also of use to some. It’s called “The Digital Citizenship Education Toolbox. Free & open educational materials on democracy, digitalisation & non-formal education.”

Old School RuneScape began when a dev 'found the 2007 server in their desk drawer:' 13 years later, it's setting subscriber records for the long-lived MMO

Back in June, RuneScape studio Jagex held its first live event outside the UK (and its biggest to date): Deadman All Stars, an Old School RuneScape PvP tournament. I had the chance to talk to OSRS creative director Kieren Charles at the event, and he explained his philosophy on running the 13 year-old fork of the 25 year-old MMO amid its new lease on life.

“The game’s bigger now than it was in 2007,” Charles said of RuneScape’s overall health, while OSRS is now older than RuneScape was when Old School began in 2013. Last August, Old School hit an all-time player count record eclipsing any era or version of the game, and Charles estimated upwards of one million active subscribers just for Old School.

Charles himself was part of the original RuneScape phenomenon, but as a player, one of the core mid-to-late millennial cohort that made the game ubiquitous in middle schools during the golden age of MMOs. “I grew up with the game,” Charles told me. “I was 14 in the school library playing RuneScape. I was just the one who never quit.”

But why choose the 2007 iteration of RuneScape as a starting point? The game first launched in 2001, and had already undergone major revisions like the “RuneScape 2” update in 2004. Charles joined the OSRS team a few years after it started, but looking back, he characterized the choice as “kind of arbitrary, but based on what players deemed the sort of golden [age].”

“Players actually wanted the 2006 version, but we didn’t have a copy of that version of the game,” revealed Jagex senior communications manager Danni Amos. “A [Jagex employee] found the 2007 server in their desk drawer, and we had to boot it up, see if it works.”

Do you participate in this hobby without a formal IT education or a career in a similar field?

preview

Does anyone else here participate in the selfhosting hobby without a formal IT related education or a career in a similar field? I’ve only had one or two programming courses as part of my university education, but it was only very basic Python and C. I’ve never formally learned how to use containers, version control or anything else. Sometimes I regret not pursuing an education in IT/programming because there are so many things I’d like to accomplish but can’t (for example if there’s a feature missing in some project, or to feel safe in my abilities to harden my servers and my network in order to expose services to the open internet).

Day 759 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

preview

Today’s game is Control. I’ve been wanting to pick this up and play it again for quite some time. I decided now was the perfect time for a second playthrough (along with finishing the DLCs).

I will admite i’ve spent quite a lot of time finagling the graphics though. I really wanted to try it with Raytracing as i hear it’s awesome with that and wanted to judge for myself. Unfortunately my RX 7600 XT just doesn’t seem up to the task unless i drop the scaling down low, and even then i still only get like 30 FPS at 720p and it’s all a messy smear. So not really worth it for me all just for some extra pretty rays.

I love getting into Remedy’s games too, and finding these references and inside jokes. For example The Neighbor of The Beast like right out of the gate. It reminds me of the logic behind noticing certain numbers as a pattern in real life, only hear it’s intentional. Almost like it’s the game gaslighting you if that makes sense.

Playing this is making me really miss Alan Wake 2’s Photomode as well. It was just a natural evolution. Here the controls are a lot less fine, such as the major F-Stops being like 0,5 > 0.7 > 1.0 > 4.0 > 5.7 > 8 > 16. I would love to have a F11 there. Legit love to default to that because 11 is such a nice number. There’s also just a lot less fine tuning for color grading and such.

I remember the game being short, so i got the the Telephone and decided that was a perfect point to stop for today. Especially because i gave the game another hour of play time than i should messing with Graphics and RT/FSR
