so i was at BK, eating an unreasonably expensive plant-based chili chee tortilla 🌶️🧀. it was good, maybe a bit too good. i started eating it… differently, until i noticed what i was doing. almost like in these TV commercials where they kinda kiss-eat a whopper or something.

it was tasty. and no, unfortunately the 1% cheese in the chili cheese sauce was unfortunately not vegan i have to inform you. sorry.

i wanted to make some kind of praise post for a while but always felt it would feel undeserved and thus not real. so this is how i’m doing it instead.

In 1870 Émile Baudot created a code for telegraphy that used bits in place of dot and dashes. That allowed more words per minute to be transmitted than was possible with morse code.

With Baudot code machines could be built that would automatically decode the signal and type it out as plain english. This technology would be called the teletype machine.

Teletype machines still used this code or variation until they were replaced over a century later.

This is also where the term Baud rate comes from.

In September 2026, the release of a complete map of an adult male fruit fly’s neural connections gave the internet a new scientific dataset to experiment with (and meme).

Within days, social media users were connecting simulations of the fly’s neural network to everything from Beat Saber and Minecraft to cryptocurrency trading and parallel parking, turning the fruit fly brain into the centerpiece of a growing series of memes and absurd experimental projects.

The trend quickly became known for viral videos showing the simulated fly brain performing increasingly unexpected tasks, such as playing video games, trading Bitcoin and driving.

So, how did a scientific breakthrough become a source of viral internet experiments? Let’s find out. Here’s what’s going on with all the “Fruit Fly Brain Simulation” memes.

Where Did ‘Fly Brain Simulations’ Come From?

The meme originated back on September 3rd, 2026, following the release of MaleCNS v1.0, a complete wiring diagram of an adult male fruit fly’s central nervous system created by HHMI Janelia’s FlyEM team, the Cambridge Connectomics Group and Google Research.

The dataset maps roughly 165,000–166,000 neurons and millions of synaptic connections, traced from electron-microscope images of a real fly.

It was released as an openly available dataset that could be downloaded and simulated, following earlier efforts such as FlyWire’s mapping of the female fruit fly brain.

Later that day, the official News from Google X / Twitter account (@NewsFromGoogle) then posted about the scientific breakthrough, informing people of the marvel of science.

Within days of the release, developers began running leaky-integrate-and-fire simulations of the connectome and connecting the fly’s sensory and motor neurons to external inputs and outputs.

On September 7th, 2026, YouTuber Ro0oney uploaded a video titled “I Put A Fly’s Conscious Brain into Minecraft,” showing how they simulated the fruit fly in the survival game Minecraft.

The video received over hundreds of thousands of views and tens of thousands of likes in just a few days, becoming one of the earliest major viral posts about the fly brain and humorous simulations using it — subsequently kicking off a slew of other jokes.

How Are The ‘Fruit Fly Brain Simulations’ Used In Memes?

As more developers, researchers and social media users experimented with the virtual fruit fly brain, the dataset quickly became a source of memes centered around putting the simulated fly into increasingly unusual situations.

Various clips shared online showed the simulated fruit fly playing games, trading cryptocurrency and controlling a vehicle, with each new experiment adding another use for the publicly available neural network.

One especially viral example shows the simulated fly brain being used to play the virtual-reality rhythm game Beat Saber.

Another viral post shows the fly brain being given $100 to trade Bitcoin, with dopamine neurons stimulated when the fly makes a profit.

Another example shows the simulated fly-brain system driving and attempting to complete the “ultimate test” of parallel parking.

The trend also includes experiments placing the simulated fly brain inside virtual environments and allowing it to explore entirely on its own.

What Are Some Related Memes?

The Fly Brain Simulations trend is part of a broader pattern in which legitimate scientific research can quickly escape its original academic context and become meme fodder online.

Once unusual or unexpected findings from a study reach social media, users can turn the research itself into the basis for jokes, screenshots and viral discussions, often focusing on the strangest details of the findings.

One example is the “Doki Doki Literature Club! Birthing Fanfiction” story, also known as the “Extreme Outlier ChatGPT User,” a viral incident that emerged in early July 2026 after researchers published a study examining how people use AI for creative writing.

Screenshots and summaries of the findings quickly spread across social media over the summer, particularly Twitter / X, where users joked about the individual’s extraordinary dedication to the niche subject matter.

The findings came from the research paper “AI Fiction in the Wild,” published on June 24th, 2026, by researchers from the University of Washington and the University of Colorado Boulder, which analyzed more than 500,000 anonymized English-language ChatGPT conversations from the WildChat dataset.

I won’t mention which game and creator this is (a game on itchio), as I don’t want witch hunt here. It’s an indie dev after all. If you saw the post "I watched an artist evolve from producing rough art to delivering elite, top-tier artwork” with NSFW content (the one with oversized boobies), then you know what I mean.

What makes me sad and angry is, that I pointed out it looks like Ai was involved in the art creation. The author of the post replied that only background and 10% of the art was created with Ai, and that the game is 50 hours long. Feels very much like it was the developer himself? After I replied with this is problematic, because this was explained only after I mentioned it. There was no Ai mentioned in the itchio page or the post.

What followed was, the post got deleted. I reached out to the Lemmy user and asked in a private message why it was deleted. Shortly after then the Lemmy account are got deleted too.

What to make out of this? I was not toxic in anyway and didn’t saw any toxic comments from others. I didn’t want an indie developer to disappear, if the work is honest and the game is fun. Just don’t hide things. How should a situation like these be handled in the future?

Fewer kids are being vaccinated in most European Union (EU) countries in recent years, according to Italian researchers, who warn this is reversing substantial progress made since 1980. The team looked at vaccination data on seven childhood vaccines (diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b, measles, pneumococcus, polio and rubella) across all 27 EU countries between 1980 and 2024. Over the full period, vaccination rates rose in most countries for most vaccines, but 16 countries have seen recent declines in vaccination rates for four or more vaccines. Most of the recent declines began between 2019 and 2022, they say, during COVID-19. The pandemic may have contributed to the disruption of routine vaccination services, the authors add, although they caution that their study just looked at changing rates, not causes.

Threat Research Team identified a cross-store browser extension, “Twitch Enhanced Viewer | JeetBot,” that forwards each user’s live Twitch OAuth session token to proxy servers operated by a Russian commercial bot service. Donald Trump’s White House has launched Arcade.Gov, a site with mini-games where you catch and deport immigrants, or use Tetris blocks to build a border wall.

I know that this is potentially a spicy thing to post to this community, but I do think it is relevant to games and gaming. They are advertising it with using likenesses of major gaming brands.

Earlier this week, Gamers Nexus, Level1Techs, and independent security researchers detailed some alarming findings about how LG’s TVs are logging and uploading data on its users. Now the company is pushing back against those allegations, saying that “Some recent media coverage may have contributed to misconceptions about how LG smart TVs work.”

LG released a statement in which it claims that its “TVs do not continuously record or transmit users’ conversations,” and that wake-word detection is all processed locally. However, the word “continuously” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here as Gamers Nexus demonstrated an LG TV keeping extensive logs of ambient conversations long after one would assume its AI assistant had stopped listening.

Today’s game is some more Halo MCC. I went back and finished the Backrooms mod with my friend. It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting. I’ll spoiler things for anyone that might want to check it out, because it’s like a short 25 minute romp that’s free. But:

I also finally tried out the Trench Coat mod with my friend. The mod is basically the idea that one player controls movement and the other aiming. I think our version was bugged because I controlled aiming, shooting, and grenades, while my friend controlled everything EXCEPT aiming.

The mod was interesting. It created this unique challenge where it felt hard, but didn’t feel impossible or even remotely challenging. Like, it was a constant battle but I only died once or twice.

Unfortunately this was the last mission we did for the night because my network decided it loved the idea of crashing out on me. And even now it seems to be giving me issues and not uploading my last image. Tonight I finished the 100% objectives in Assassin’s Creed III as well. Hopefully I’ll be finishing that up tomorrow and starting the DLC. I’ve never played them so I’m excited.
