silliness aside, i honestly sit there and plan it out. i wish i pulled the trigger and started earlier. i actually bought two mini pcs before this mess and have one setup running proxmox. o have this beautiful jellyfin -> jellyseer -> radarr/sonarr -> sazbd -> gluetun -> newsreader setup on proxmox and i founf 1 8tb wd red plus on sale that i put in a ugreen nas running truenas and its filling up quickly.

i wont move to nextcloud until i get a second drive for mirroring. i still have to find a place to backup those future files as well.

there is not really a point tp this post except i know people here feel my pain. how i dream of buy a few 12 tb drives.

for now i find stuff and put price alerts on them. o have tried ebay but i dont always get what i pay for. like buying wlanlisting that says wd red plus cmr and getting a wd red (non plus) smr.

i fantasize about the cool rack setup i could build. right now everything, jellyfin stack, home assistant, glance dashboard, pteradactyl, netbird , anf any vm i want to play with all on one proxmox mini pc. next comes books

Of the many useful things I could do with my spare time instead I’m setting up a Lemmy instance because why not. The scope of this is definitely greater than any self-hosting I’ve ever attempted, so please feel free to tell me just how much trouble I’m in. I’m just giving the broad strokes to see if I’ve made any crucial errors (other than deciding to do this at all).

And if this is a completely wrong place for a post like this or I’m missing data I’m supposed to include I apologize, I probably need a sanity check, in more ways than one.

First limitation, I’ll be hosting it on an existing Linux Mint box acting as a file share mostly and occasional gaming PC/movie streaming box. Its hardware is overkill for this, I do not anticipate issues when it is in use. It receives regular updates and weekly reboots, instance will be set to automatically restart. NVMe with loads of space for local storage, RAID SSDs for data offload/backup.

Second limitation, I hate Cloudfare and Oracle. I do not want to use either of them.

Third limitation, money. Cheaper is better. I have a URL picked out and a registrar which will give me the cheapest long term option, in case I actually keep this thing going.

Last limitation, I’m already in over my head so I’ll be relying on a lot of googling and probably some chat bots to figure things out as I go through the actual deployment process. What could go wrong?

So, Lemmy hosted on Linux Mint box using Docker containers. ISP is a good one for this I’m told, no CGNAT, largely stable public IP but I’ll have a script running in case it does change. Confirmed ports 80/443 are open. Using Caddy for the HTTPS. Closed registration to start, if by some miracle I make it to actually wanting to allow additional users it will not be fully open, and I’ll use Brevo for the email SMTP. Security wise I know I’m making it harder for myself by exposing my IP, I’m going to have UFW running and Crowdsec to help keep incoming bad traffic out.

Down the line I’ll get Lemmy updates, backups, retention rules in place/automated, and make decisions on federation, etc. Thoughts?

Videos looping infinitely in SABR requests and becoming unwatchable.

Comments unavailable to read because of “TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘endpoint’)”.

These have been a problem for like at least 2 weeks now. Before there were like 3 refreshes due to SABR and you could open up comments by spamming the button despite the error.

Now however, it’s completely unusable.

Is this the death of FreeTube? I’ve really loved this software and would hate to have to permanently return to the website with all that tracking bullshit and no offline subscriptions :(

The first thing to know about Cyberselfish, the chillingly prescient 2000 book about Silicon Valley that its author, Paulina Borsook, says “ruined my life” and caused a 25-year-long “curse” to befall her, is that it’s very, very funny. Cyberselfish, which Borsook cannot stand to name and instead calls “TDB” (short for “that damn book”), is a classic, fish-out-of-water tale of a journalist investigating a strange land. Except, in her case, as a California native, it’s the work of a fish regarding an invasive species that suddenly befouled the tank she’d been swimming in her whole life.

Her observations from the murky milieu of the dawning tech world are as hilarious as they are depressing; early in the book, for instance, Borsook recounts what happened after she wrote a satirical guide for the website Suck.com on dating men in tech. (Do profess Ayn Rand fandom, “don’t tell him about your best friend, the urban planner, who uses HUD money to develop low-income housing.”) After the piece was published, emails cascaded into her inbox.

“Guys were positive that I had been writing about them,” Borsook wrote in Cyberselfish. “Or about someone they knew (I hadn’t written about anyone in particular). Guys wanted to meet me for coffee, as I was obviously their dream girl (it was a joke, guys, and no, thank you). At last! A woman who understands me! No, more modestly, I was just someone who had been paying attention.”

Borsook, an author and poet, began working in Silicon Valley in 1981, first as a technical writer for software companies. As she freelanced for various tech outlets and from her perch as a contributing writer to Wired in its earliest years, she began to piece together, as she put it in Cyberselfish, “a picture of an emergent social and political subculture, one that can seem dangerously naive and, at its worst, downright scary.”

Today, just a glance around will confirm that said subculture is no longer “emergent,” but horribly, frighteningly, society-destroyingly dominant. Fittingly, Cyberselfish will be reissued on September 15 by Tin House, an imprint of the independent publisher Zando. The three-decade plus history of the book traces back through a piece she wrote for this very magazine where she began to lay out its thesis. That essay, also titled “Cyberselfish,” ran in our July/August 1996 issue below a crystal clear subhed: “Silicon Valley, one of the country’s biggest recipients of government largesse, would like to bite the hand that feeds it.”

The games will vary in obscurity, but I promise each would have had a North American release.

Today’s game is Assassin’s Creed Revelations. I’ve been kind of achievement hunting all day. I noticed there weren’t many outside the DLC, which i was planning to play anyways. So i figured i’d give it a try. It’s been a fun experience, and relatively easy. The biggest challenge so far has been one called Lightning Strikes. It needed me to kill 5 people with the hidden blade in 5 second. The challenge was getting it within the window.

I also went and gathered the games ultimate armor set (or whatever you want to call it). The parkour to get it was fun, and the hunt wasn’t too bad. But big complaint: the mask looks fucking dorky. I wish i could remove it. Maybe i can. I might be entirely wrong. I couldn’t find a way though.

I also went through the Memory Seal for Sequence 6. I mention this because i wanted to talk about the mission that leads right into it. It ends with Ezio getting to take a picnic with Sofia. I really liked this, because as far as the Main story goes through it’s the first time i feel like i get to see Ezio just stop and take it easy. It really put into perspective how much he’s grown from the Suave playboy in AC2. It’s just something i thought was interesting.

After finishing up that mission i got booted back into the Animus Island thing. I decided that was a perfect time to take a break. As far as i know this boots into the next mission which is in the cave city thing (as far as i remember at least). I thought when i got on next it’d be a perfect opportunity to finish the last Desmond Mission.

I had the luck to stumble across Swiff recently, a project that brings Flash games back to modern Android devices, and its developer NaviVani was kind enough to let me interview her for both this piece and an upcoming article.

Swiff is a really interesting project for anyone who grew up with Flash games, but also for those who never got to experience that super weird but also super creative era of the internet. I want to start writing articles about political issues in my country. I would prefer not getting fired from my day job or going to prison because of it, so I will be writing under a pseudonym.

Are there any alternatives to WordPress that play nice with TOR/TAILS? WordPress is difficult to use with its complicated block editor.

I need something that is easy for a non-technical person like me. And also free, since any payment can be tied back to my identity.

I’m looking to get into driving games and would like to buy a wheel. Budget is not that much of a constraint, but it doesn’t need to be expensive for no reason.

Things that are important to me are:

• Should be fixable to a desk without drilling through the desk, but still hold on tight even when force is applied.
• Should be sturdy and have the feel of a real steering wheel of your average consumer car or racing car.
• Should have buttons such that I can hold it with both hands and still use the hands for throttling and breaking, i.e. at least two thumb-reachable buttons. (I am not aiming at getting pedals right away)

Do you have any recommendations? Do you use a wheel yourself that you can recommend, even if it does not fit my points above?

Any input would be appreciated!
