Come and join ani.social's Matrix server!

preview

Some of you may know by now that ani.social has its own official Matrix server. But not everyone who visits this community may have realized this, since the announcement about its launch was posted only in !meta, and the server itself was initially operating only as an experiment.

However, months are passing by, and it doesn’t look like the Matrix server is going away, so I wanted to invite members of this community to join us there. So far, the server is not very populated, but we do have a handful of regulars. There are rooms for anime, manga, novels, and there’s one for everything and anything too. This isn’t an attempt to lure you away from this forum, but simply an addition to enhance the experience for those who, apart from discussing posts here, also enjoy a real-time chat from time to time. Come and say hi!

You can join by using this link #space:ani.social or by entering #space:ani.social into your Matrix client.

Here’s a link to the official announcement (it includes information about registration on ani.social, but you can join using your existing Matrix account):
ani.social/post/28183037

Side note: If you decide to join, it’s a good idea to use spoilers when discussing anime/manga. However, not all Matrix clients can send or even display spoilers (most notably Element X – it can’t even obscure spoiler messages, so you’re risking getting spoiled; Element Web/Desktop is fine). That’s why I’d recommend using a client that supports spoilers. Personally, I can recommend Cinny, Commet Chat, Gomuks for desktop, and FluffyChat for mobile/desktop. SchildiChat Next is also decent on Android, but it only displays spoilers, can’t send them (there’s a workaround but it’s inconvenient). Obviously, you can use any other client if you want. The almost full list can be found here matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/

For those who don’t know what Matrix is – it’s basically a Discord for nerds and also kind of an IRC spiritual successor. It’s unpolished – you can realize that from reading the note – but still can be quite fun!
You can read more about it here: matrix.org

Follow the white rabbit, Neo!

@edit:
If you like the Cinny client, you can now use the version hosted in the ani.social domain:

[AIP] Reitti v5.3.0: Multi-Segment Trips, Spatial Coverage & FIT File Support

preview

Hey everyone!

A lot has happened since the v5.0 announcement. Step by step, Reitti grows into something richer: it now understands journeys with multiple transportation modes, tells you how much of your world you have actually explored, geotags the photos your camera didn´t, and reads the FIT recordings from your sports watch. Yesterday’s v5.3.0 brought all of these threads together, and I want to take a moment to share this progress with the community.

For anyone new here: Reitti (Finnish for “route”) is a self-hosted, privacy-first alternative to Google Timeline. It turns raw GPS points from your devices into visits, trips and a timeline of your life, stored exclusively on your own infrastructure.

Here are the features I’m most excited about:

Multi-Segment Transportation Modes

Real journeys are rarely single-mode: you walk to the car, drive, then walk again. Reitti now understands this and models it as one trip with multiple transport segments instead of mislabeling everything as “Driving”.

  • Color-coded track lines with transition badges exactly where you switched modes (new “Display Transportation Modes” map setting)
  • Fully customizable icons & colors per transport mode under Settings > Transportation Modes
  • One click to reclassify your entire existing history, with live progress on the redesigned job status page

Spatial Coverage

Hexagons are bestagons.

The “fog of war” for your life: Reitti now calculates how much of your cities, regions, and countries you have actually explored, down to the percentage. With the historical sliders you can watch your map fill in year by year.

Heads up: this optional feature requires SPATIAL_COVERAGE=true, roughly 10 GB of additional disk space and some initial indexing time. Everything about setup and configuration is covered in the Spatial Coverage documentation.

Photo Geotagging via Immich

This one is for everyone running Immich next to Reitti: connect the two services once, and Reitti can locate photos that have no GPS data, then write the coordinates permanently back into your Immich library.

How it works: Reitti takes a photo’s capture timestamp, matches it against your recorded location history, and shows you the suggested position. Happy with what you see? One button press writes it into the photo’s metadata in Immich. Nothing happens without your confirmation.

This solves a real problem: most dedicated cameras, whether DSLR, mirrorless or action cam, simply have no GPS receiver. Until now, those photos sat forever on Immich’s “no location” pile or needed tedious manual tagging. With Reitti, the tracker you already carry does the job your camera never could. And since everything happens between your own two self-hosted services, not a single byte leaves your infrastructure.

FIT File Support

Reitti now natively imports .fit files, the standard format for cycling computers and sports watches from Garmin, Wahoo & co. No more converting your rides and runs to GPX first: drop them in and they show up in your timeline like any other recording.

More Highlights

  • Live Location Only mode users (v5.2): share your live position without building a permanent history log. Privacy-first family tracking.
  • Bulk GPX uploads for GPSLogger (v5.2): fewer connections, noticeably less battery drain.
  • Improved visit/trip detection (v5.1): better algorithms mean less manual cleanup.

Community & Support

I’m always curious how you all use Reitti, so feel free to share your setup and stories in the comments. ❤️

AI Disclosure

Per this community’s rules for project promotion posts, here is exactly how AI was used in building Reitti:

  • Implementation (Assisted): AI helps me generate boilerplate and work through specific problems, but the bulk of the code is written by me, and every change is carefully reviewed and tested before it lands in a release.
  • Documentation (Assisted): I use AI as a writing tool to get docs and release notes into an appropriate state. The content, structure and decisions are mine; AI polishes language, clarity and consistency.

Everything else, including architecture, system design, testing, review and deployment, I do by hand.

[3 media attachments] Dear friends,

Please gather around for a long post about #WSocial and how they are responding to critiques.

I have noticed a trend: W Social leaders and staunch supporters are describing any critical posts about the company as “targeted disinformation.” Its CEO said they will soon have a technical solution in place for this. Oh?!?

I suppose the “targeted disinformation” claims are about recent posts by the likes of me and @pallenberg about troubling hate speech that is allowed on W Social.

Claims backed by hard evidence, in the form of screenshots and video captures. (I am increasingly doing screen recordings of problematic posts and interactions by W Social people because they have a tendency to delete evidence - like an infamous comment on a video by the Instutute for Remigration).

⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️

Discrediting sources, renaming evidence as “disinformation” and creating a victim narrative has a long, storied history.

⬆️ ⬆️ ⬆️

But I’m digressing. I speak up about W Social because:

  • Mainstream media runs PR fluff about them;

  • Horrid hate speech on the platform is completely unmoderated.

W Social is currently showing the limits of free speech absolutism. Its CEO wrote: “We don’t need W to become another echo chamber.”

Reminds you of something?

Atmosphere user @echna.bsky.social astutely remarked that “W Social is on an X speedrun, without ever having been like Twitter.”

Bluesky, #Blacksky, and #Northsky have mechanisms in place to report hate speech - and I am super thankful for that.

As of today, I cannot report to W Social posts by their users that contain hate speech.

The W Social moderation list’s only purpose is to make a distinction between verified users and bots.

Compare it with Blacksky’s moderation list and be amazed (see screenshots).

Day 770 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

Today’s game is Control. I went back through the Ashtray maze today and got a series of photos i really like. I did a lot of stuff with lines and light which i really like how they turned out. I’m just gonna quickly dump them here because there’s not a lot i have to say about them other than “I think they look cool”.

Anyways, Reflections. These reflections are so damn sexy. Like, i legit spent a solid 5 minutes playing with the photomode and checking out the reflections. I think Control has to have some of my favorite reflections i’ve seen in a long time. It makes me want to see how Alan Wake 2 fairs… I’ll hold off on another playthrough though. For now at least. I’ve done quite a lot of playthroughs of that game and i should work through other things in my library.

I finished the Foundation DLC today and started the AWE expansion. I didn’t get far but i primarily wanted to talk about Hartman. They fucking nailed it with him as an enemy. I love how he’s this sort of Dynamic Threat you can’t fight off. You can only really ward him away for the time being. Getting in that elevator especially was terrifying because it traps you in there and you can’t do anything as he inches closer and forces the door up. My experience with Alan Wake had me really going “I wish i had a fucking flashlight right now”.

Anyways, the DLC appears to be short so i’ll probably make quick work of this game and then move on to the next game in my backlog. I might try a few sidequests though that catch my attention.

With Nitter getting a cease and desist today, I'm glad I moved family photos off big platforms last winter

preview

Saw the top post today about Nitter getting a cease and desist. Not surprised, but it hit a nerve.

Last winter I finally moved my family off Google Photos. Not for ideology, just tired of paying for One that gets more expensive every year.

Old Dell Optiplex 7040 in the closet, Immich for photos, Nextcloud for docs, Matrix for family chat. It was messy. I forgot to set up proper backups and almost lost a month of kid photos in January. My wife still brings it up.

Before that I thought privacy was about picking a better provider. Nitter was part of that logic too - use a private frontend for a bad platform. But frontends die. Nitter, Invidious, all of them. One letter and it’s gone.

Self-hosting didn’t solve everything, but at least my photos don’t depend on someone else’s frontend staying alive. The problem now is family. My server is in my closet, but my sister is still on Messenger, my mom on iCloud. My setup doesn’t protect them.

Curious how you handle this part. When the frontend you rely on disappears, do you try to move family to Signal/Matrix or just accept you can only protect your own node?

I’m genuinely gonna try to end it if I dont meet anyone to talk to and bond with. I cant with this, I seem to be an exception while everyone else seems to succeed to at least keep a conversation going. also, this conservative family is suffocating me. and environment is I have melatonin, some atarax and maybe some adderall in the house. nothing really lethal per se, but if I combine it with alcohol and something else, it might be deadly. I honestly dont know what to do

If it helps others this was my config. To be honest I have a weak grasp of what it actually does so there might be some security issues with it.

Apparently you can also add lemmy as a search engine. Will work on that later.

Nitter receives Cease & Desist from X/Twitter

nitter.net
preview

nitter.net is currently replaced with a message about the C&D until zedeus (lead dev) gets legal advice on how to proceed. Other instances are probably ok for now (or at least until an API break). Not a great sign for anyone else who hosts it, but hopefully it gets resolved without development permanently stopping.

Cease and desist

On 24 August 2026 cease and desist letters have been sent by X Corp. demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project’s repository.

nitter.net is offline and development has stopped for the time being. I’m seeking legal advice and won’t be commenting further on the specifics for now.

Thank you to everyone who used, hosted, packaged, donated and contributed to Nitter over the past seven years.
